  • One flaw, but the rest is gold that overcomes it
Everything about it I love except one part, a very most important part that almost caused me to give it 4 stars. There is not a big push to empower people to write and record their own self talk programs like in What To Say When You Talk To Yourself, there is a big push to buy the self talk recordings Dr Shad Helmstetter has recorded though. Luckily, however, and to the saving grace, the recordings are optimal, *and* you can glean the process for creating the self talk programs to listen to by reading the book. But I didn't get the feeling it was of great importance to empower the reader to create their own recordings, which I find greatly disappointing. The issue with the above is that there are only a select few self talk recordings in the store the book promotes, and they're all general enough, not very specialized. What if someone wanted to program themselves, in the manner described in the book, with setting personal boundaries? Or program themselves with becoming a better leader? There isn't any, at the time of this writing, of those very specific kinds of self talk programs in the store. Again, luckily, that's not too big an issue because the gold of this book far outweighs *any* negative, and the only negative I've found so far is the lack of "you can record your OWN self talk recordings, and here's exactly how." The book does describe how and why Dr Helmstetter records the self talk recordings in the store which is sufficient enough to follow on your own, and to improve upon. Now as for the good, where to start: the main 7 rules of neuroplasticity in and of itself are *great* for the programming of your own mind, with and without self talk, although they are great for creating your own self talk anyway. 1) mindfulness, 2) choice, 3) intention, 4) focus, 5) repetition, 6) emotion, 7) belief. All of these elements can and should be taken into account when making self talk recordings, but they are also great for promoting success in any part of your life anyway. I've already taken on a few mindsets from these rules relating to my own self talk, my own programming. For instance: "intending to have an outstanding day, choosing to have an outstanding day, focusing on having an outstanding day, being mindful of my own ability to have an outstanding day, defining and *choosing* to feel the positive emotions of having an outstanding day, and believing I can and will have an outstanding day today and every day here forward." This book is a lot more than just self talk, as I was initially expecting, and I am pleasantly surprised at the personal development gold I got from it. I will and would recommend it to any who wants more out of their life, wants more out of their brain, and wants to be the very best they can be every single day, every single moment. ... show more

  • Just another "think happy thoughts" book blasted with a neuroplasticity shotgun
Ok, I'm not going to completely bash this book. I watched a fascinating documentary on neuroplasticity and wanted to read more. Maybe this new breakthrough would finally end my skepticism and help me. This book seemed perfect. Yeah well if it weren't for that documentary I wouldn't have finished this. To me it seems like the author dug up an unpublished book he wrote and sprinkled the word "neuroplasticity" throughout it. Five minutes of that documentary had more information on the subject of neuroplasticity than this entire book. I got some good mental tips, but I feel like I was tricked. "So you didn't believe happy thoughts will help ya? Well there little buddy, how about a big science word? There you go, follow the doctor." I know this book's target audience. I'm not saying anything bad about them, they are just people who don't care about learning how our body works, the theories, science, studies, biology, etc. If you are a person who asks questions instead of just nodding your head then this book is definitely not for you. There's only brief vague mentions of examples, no case studies, not really any science at all. I can't ask a book questions, right? So it better have the answers. This book is more like a "just take my word for it" type of thing. I didn't totally dismiss the book, I'm sure it can help a lot of people, but it wasn't enough for me. No real loss, though, I spend more money on one glass of scotch. ... show more

  • BEAUTIFULLY AND SIMPLY WRITTEN BEST BOOK
As an occupational therapist with over 18 years experience, I could not wait to get this book. I am happy to report that I was not disappointed. Dr. Shad has taken the complicated concept of how the brain works and put it into simple terms for anyone to understand. I was very excited to see this type of information in print and hitting the mainstream. Dr. Shad has always been a pioneer, he is bold, honest and brave. His love for people and love to empower them is clear. I found this book to be enjoyable to read. I recommend this book to my patients, family and friends. This book finally puts into print the truth of how the brain is made for infinite possibilities. If you have ever been curious as to why you haven't been able to change your life even though you have done so many things to make changes, GET THIS BOOK. Once you have this information, you will know how to own your thoughts, make the changes and own your life...if you are willing to make a different choice. You are worthy to receive this book. ... show more

  • DIY Brainwashing
Join the cult! You too can be a delusional moron. What a complete waste. Do not bother with this BS get a life that is grounded in reality not just a pair of tinted shades. This piece of filth stinks to high heaven. Thinking this way is NOT empowering, it is very dangerous and damningly, damaging! NOT ONE WORD of this prevents the storms life will throw at you and NOTHING written in this book will rescue you in your most challenging moments. Denial is one of the most destructive pretenses of the human mind and this "teaching", more like random observations, exploits and contrives the intellect and soul at it's fabric. If you want an escape, try curling up with a fairytale fantasy a genuine feel good instead of a forced smile. ... show more

Wow! I haven't finished reading this book, and it's already changed my life - maybe it's part of The secret? Combine The Power of Neuroplasticity (Helmstetter) with Think and Grow Rich (Hill) and The Tapping Solution (Orwin) and you have the makings of a very successful life! This book explains why positive thinking is so important, while The Tapping Solution provides a great way to reinforce the messages from the other books. The highlighter is definitely getting a workout in the Kindle App. ... show more
