Description

This solo piano edition of Tchaikovsky's masterful Christmas ballet offers pianists a chance to enjoy favorites such as "The Dance of the Sugar-Plum Fairy" and "The Waltz of the Flowers." Entirely faithful to Tchaikovsky's brilliant orchestral score, this delightful arrangement by Sergey Taneyev and the composer himself renders the complete ballet in a style both idiomatic to the piano and specially designed to be relatively easy to play. Here are all the movements of the beloved Suite, along with the rest of this holiday favorite, in which a brave and loyal little girl's toy is transformed into a prince who accompanies her into a magical world. Suitable for performers, rehearsal pianists, and all admirers of Tchaikovsky's art, this inexpensive edition of a perennial favorite will enchant players and listeners alike. Read more

  • Excellent complete arrangement revised by Tchaikovsky himself
This Dover sheet music book contains the complete Nutcracker ballet music arranged for piano. When I say "complete", there are a few caveats. Of course, the famous Sugar Plum Fairy dance in included here - the reviewer who claims it is omitted is mistaken. Some of the modern names for the dances differ from the original names, so a casual glance at the contents might give the impression some things are missing but every dance is here. The modern Balanchine version of the ballet added a short section of music from Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty ballet between the departure of the guests and the battle with the mice; that section is not included because it wasn't written for the Nutcracker. As I understand it, Russian composer Sergei Taneyev originally created a piano arrangement from Tchaikovsky's full orchestral score, and Tchaikovsky himself later modified Taneyev's arrangement to simplify it. The publisher description of this book states that this is Teneyev's unabridged arrangement, but looking at the various editions on ISMLP makes me think this is Tchaikovsky's version. Taneyev's arrangement is, in parts, extremely dense and challenging, and Tchaikovsky simplified much of it to make it (in my opinion) more pleasing to play and listen to. Most of this sheet music is still pretty challenging and best suited for intermediate to advanced players; it's definitely not for beginners. If you look on the IMSLP website (International Music Score Library Project), you can find versions of the original Teneyev arrangement and the Tchaikovsky simplification. For some reason both arrangements (including the one presented in this book) omit four measures near the beginning of the toy soldier dance; however, if you can track down the 1982 Leningrad "Musique" edition of Tchikovsky's arrangement, those four measures are present. I don't know why those measures would be missing in any edition but I prefer playing as faithful a version as possible so I add them back in based on the Musique edition. I don't know if there are any other edits as I haven't played through the whole thing compared to the orchestral score but so far that's all I've found. The cover states it has "lay-flat sewn binding", but the 176 pages of this book are tightly bound with stitches and glue, and the book definitely does not stay anywhere near flat no matter how much you bend it. I have to use clips to keep it in place when playing. Such a thick book would be much better served by spiral binding. Aside from the binding, this is a nice edition and a fun challenge to play for fans of the Nutcracker. I'll be enjoying learning pieces from this book for many years to come. ... show more

  • A workable arrangement, fun to play
It's nice that Tchaikovsky made this arrangement, as it's more accessible to the average pianist. The Taneyev arrangement, like Siloti's for The Sleeping Beauty, is too notey and awkward in many spots. It's like Taneyev took the orchestral score and dumped it into a piano format, trying to include every last line of the orchestral texture in the piano part. Then again, I guess that's why they call them reductions. Tchaikovsky's own arrangement reveals more consideration and subtlety. ... show more

  • ALL OF IT!
All those in-between-the-hits pieces. My daughter danced in so many productions of the Nutcracker ballet. I'm a pianist and have loved all the music of the ballet. So this book really fills in the gaps that the my Schirmer's Nutcracker Suite piano music doesn't have. Love it!

  • Nice piano score.
Very nice piano score, definitely not for beginners, I would say that it is at least at an intermediate level. Some parts were not represented such as the upper winds in the Battle Scene, and it seemed like there were a few measures missing in Snow. It’s a nice piece.

  • Awesome and Moderatly Easy!
I bought this book about 2 weeks ago with some hesitation as to how hard/easy the level was. According to the reviews I had read, it was very advanced and not for the casual player. I must say that I disagree. True, to play any song you must know the notes, timings, and how to read the music. But beyond that, there is really no reason why the beginner can't play the songs in the book. I already have most of 'The March' memorized, and I've only had the book for 2 weeks. No teacher help necessary! I quit lessons about four years ago after advancing only to level two. With perseverance and the basic knowledge of piano, these songs are very easy to play. The songs also sound exactly like the original music. I'd recommend it to anyone who asked! ... show more

  • Fun to learn, but challenging, poor binding
Just got this a few days ago. I agree with the other viewers. This is a wonderful piano edition of the nutcracker. It is somewhat challenging but fun. It is amazing how Tchaikovsky preserves the richness of the music in converting it to piano. The reason I gave this only 4 stars was the binding. This should be spiral bound as there are 167 pages. I guess for the price, beggers can't be choosers ... show more
