Description

Every once in a while a book comes along that both raises the bar of literary excellence and inspires a growing sense of hope and optimism for the future of humanity. The Moron at the End of This Book is not that book. No sir. You might find, however, that it raises the bar on self-criticism and unconventional acts of service. It might also inspire a growing sense of hope and optimism for the future of kind-hearted morons the world over. “Couch! He wrote a book? Well, yeah, I know him. Kinda has that sea monkey intelligence, know what I mean? Like, there’s something there, but you gotta use your imagination to get anything out of the experience.” - Edgar T. Squintz, Fictional character created for reasons that may or may not be obvious. On the whole, The Moron at the End of This Book is an insightful, self-scrutinizing memoir about the highs and woes of a life, perhaps not well-lived, but, well, lived. With a collection of short stories and love letters to the living and the dead, author Andrew Couch calls upon nearly 40 years of impulsive actions, unusual friendships, odd jobs, and a careworn moral compass to deliver a mercifully one-of-a-kind account of a man in search of approval from his child-self. In First Communion Blues, the glory of virtue and faith collide with the agony of excess and innocence. Take an engaging and darkly humorous journey through questionable-but-entertaining choices connecting near-death- by-karate-belt to slap-dash psycho-analysis in Hang On, Diagnosis! Get a behind-the-retail-counter glimpse into the world of fanatical-but-sweet post- mortem Elvis worship in Graceland. In Ain’t No Heroes Here, we learn why drugs might be bad for people. In Curiosity Killed the Cake, we learn why drugs might be bad for coconut cake and good sex. And of course no good memoir would be complete without mention of the coming-of-age, poorly-handled bodily functions revealed in Of Course, I Give a Shit. Says Couch: “Moron may be my native tongue, but to be useful is my love language. I’ve pursued my weird interests and developed various skills for that purpose - to be useful. I’m the kind of guy you can trust to be on time while ensuring you maintain a sense of moral and intellectual superiority. You know, like a dog or a child of average intelligence.” Learn more @Read more

  • Stellar storytelling
"The Moron at the End of This Book" by Andrew Couch is an extraordinary masterpiece that effortlessly transports readers into an enthralling world of storytelling. From beginning to end, the author's remarkable talent captivates readers, leaving them longing for more. One of the most impressive qualities of this book is the author's storytelling prowess. With each tale and turn of the page, the author weaves a narrative that is intriguing, entertaining, and immersive. The skillful use of descriptive (albeit sometimes blunt) language and vivid imagery brings each story to life, making it feel as though the reader is a part of the adventure. The way in which the author engages the reader's imagination is truly commendable, and it leaves a lasting impact. I think often about what the Munsties are up to. Moreover, "The Moron at the End of This Book" showcases the author's unique voice and style. The prose is compelling and engaging, effortlessly keeping readers hooked throughout each journey. It is evident that the author has poured his heart and soul into crafting his experiences and stories, and it resonates deeply with readers. After reading this book, I am eagerly anticipating the author's future works. Their ability to create such captivating stories speaks volumes about their talent and potential. It is my sincere hope that they continue writing, as their stories have the power to transport readers and leave a lasting impact. In conclusion, "The Moron at the End of This Book" is a true gem in the realm of storytelling. Its ability to transport readers, the author's incredible storytelling skills, and the desire it ignites for more make it a truly stellar read. I highly recommend this book to anyone who appreciates masterful storytelling and is ready to embark on an unforgettable journey through Andrew’s stories and experiences. ... show more

  • delightful, insightful, pithy, funny, and easy-reading. perhaps the best toilet book I've ever owned
Wow! A friend told me to get this book, and I didn't know what to expect. Suffice it to say, I found this book to be one of the most delightful, insightful, pithy, funny, and easy-reading books I've read in my entire life. Given the format of this book (short stories that don't need to be read in chronological order), it's digestible in small bites...and I must tell you...every bite is delicious. Andrew is a masterful storyteller who, like many other great storytellers, invites you on a journey that is eminently relatable (I also grew up in the South in the same era) and/or whimsically imaginable. His self-deprecating charm allows you to not only laugh at him, but also laugh at yourself about your own absurdities, lessons learned the hard way, and people and experiences that have helped make you who you are. This book is a celebration of the human condition, in all its messy, beautiful, meaningless, and meaningful glory. Buy the book and put it by your toilet or by your bed…or wherever. It's not often that you can acquire levity and gravity at the same time in a very short window. ... show more

  • Great short story collection
Not every story in a memoir can hit home for all readers, but overall - and especially surprising that I’m nothing like the author - I really found a lot to love in this series of short stories/memories from Andrew Couch. I enjoyed his small-town-guy-in-the-big-apple times, his nursing home visit to his grandfather, and his through line of dissection surrounding his relationship with his dad. I related to his bartending days and his thoughts on friends he’d lost. I always find it interesting when someone “not famous” writes a book about themselves. I find myself wondering why they thought anyone would want to hear these stories, then I realizing I’m engaged in the stories and relating them to my own life and people I know and I’m thankful that said “normal guy” decided to share. The audio narration is also well-done. I feel like middle-aged men would especially appreciate this, but really anyone who can appreciate another person’s life (hello, cultural anthro major inside me) would enjoy The Moron At The End Of This Book. ... show more

  • The perfect book for a guest room or…the toilet?
This book is equal parts charming, poignant and laugh-out-loud funny. The author’s willingness to share his most vulnerable and touching moments can allow his fortunate readers to forgive themselves for their own embarrassing life choices. Full disclosure: I met Andrew a year and a half ago and his kind, soft-spoken and emotionally generous friendship has been a gift in my life. (Plus, he makes me laugh. A LOT.) Enjoy and share this book with people who could use some light and laughter in their lives. And if you’d like a real treat, be sure to listen to him share these stories when it becomes available on Audible. You’ll feel like you’ve you’ve made a new wonderful friend. ... show more

  • Top 3 best reads this year
There’s something comforting about reading a book that is relatable on different levels. This book of short stories had me laughing out loud like nothing else I’ve read. And it had me feeling the feels with its heartfelt sentiments. When I finished the book I felt a renewed sense of kinship with humanity: we all laugh, we all cry. We share the same emotions as we respond to all life’s ups & downs. Every time I picked up the book to read a new chapter, it felt like sitting down and visiting with a good friend. Highly recommend. ... show more

  • You’ll Laugh and You’ll Cry
I’m a tough critic, riddled with ADHD that often makes in hard to focus on reading. But Andrew Couch puts pen to paper in a way that makes it near impossible to put this book down. Through each chapter that is it’s own short story, perfect in time spent and execution of the tale, you find yourself seeing life through the author’s eyes. It’s a delirious and wild ride, and at the end as I suspect is Couch’s goal, you find that you yourself are the moron at the end of the book - mostly for not having the guts to tell your own story the way Couch has. Brilliantly written and I look forward to whatever comes next from this author. ... show more

  • Funny by deep and deep but funny
I came across this book through Dan Piraro's blog I faithfully read each week and I was enthralled. Once you start, you cannot put it down. It will make you laugh and cry but, most of all, it will make you think. And that is a real accomplishment.
