  • Great kit, but not everything you need is included
I picked this up for my 5 year old who was very curious about germs. I think I may have misunderstood what was included and what specific things you'd need to do all of the experiments. In the directions that came, they indicate all of the things you need such as yeast are included, but they aren't. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out what we needed. My kid was most excited about growing bacteria on petri dishes, but we weren't able to do that because the agar isn't included. It's not terribly expensive, and you can pick it up on Amazon but what do you do with the rest of it? It was easier just to buy premade agar plates that were sterile instead of having to make your own with this kit. TL:DR Great kit, easy instructions to follow, familiar magic school bus characters, but be prepared to get a lot of extras to do the experiments. ... show more

  • Great kit. My 3
Great kit. My 3.5 yr old son had a really great time experimenting. The first half of the kit/book deal with growing/fermenting yeast. The second half grows germs on petri dishes. You have to cook the agar to make the petri dishes yourself but it is pretty easy. Our germs are still growing-ewwww, gross, but so cool. And, we are typically an arts house so this science experiment thing is way outside of this moms comfort zone. ... show more

  • OK, read the instructions carefully...
Admittedly, my review is tainted by the fact that I now need to find more agar to help my son finish the coolest experiment. Because when I came over to help him and read "4 cups", I filled 4 cups of water. Like normal measured cups...not the little one that was included with the kit. So we had very gushy agar in our petri dishes. :( So sorry little guy! And agar in a small amount does not seem to be easy to come by. We've bought some other science kit sets for kids and I'd say this is of about average quality. It didn't seem like there was as much to do with it as it looked like. (That is only partially related back to the whole "cup" incident!) But if your child loves Magic School Bus as mine does (and I'm all for it too), that connection can make it even more interesting. I'd say, if it's a good price...go for it!! Just check all those measurements carefully!! ... show more

  • Do real science with your little kids!
This is a great way to introduce elementary aged kids to microbiology. The agar you get is indeed the real agar used in biology classes, and as long as you follow the very simple instructions you should be able to grow bacteria without any issues. They also include several simple yeast experiments and all of the materials required that arent basic pantry staples are supplied. They even provide data tables to help your young scientist collect data. The only improvement that I would suggest would be allowing your child to come up with an open-ended question to test. We skipped one of the given experiments and came up with our own experiment using the materials provided. Overall, this is a great kit for the price and your kids will be so excited about culturing bacteria. This is also great for kids who need some motivation to wash their hands! ... show more

  • School Bus Problem
Great activities but you have to create the petri dishes and need to purchase Agar to do so. Minimum of $10 more to do that. Should have included the amount needed and upped the price.

  • It's ok...
Got this for my son's science fair experiment. We've never worked with agar before, and the directions for making the agar weren't really clear. Cook (but for how long?), cool (to what temp/consistency or for how long? on the counter or in the fridge?) etc. Also, you have to make it all at once, and then you have 8 cups of agar! That's a lot!! The agar never did gel up properly, and I ended up buying ready-made petri dishes with agar in them already. Much more user-friendly. But the other components were great. So four stars. ... show more

  • Disappointed
Purchased the kit for homeschooling. The booklet is colorful and decently informative, but the description of materials included, is NOT what is included in the kit. Ours included 3 measuring cups, 1 balloon, 1 small magnifying glass, 1 plastic spoon, 5 small petri dishes (lids easily slide off), 3 test tubes, eye dropper, funnel, and a plastic rack. So the plasticware is only included. I will purchase the needed products so we can complete the experiments, but disappointed to see we have to order more items for something we thought was included in the Ad. If you do gift it, I would also order either agar, or prefilled petri dishes with the agar. Other than that, I think we'll enjoy the experiments. ... show more

  • Excellent Learning Tool
I teach a small group of home schoolers aged 5-8 based on these kits and this kit got rave reviews. Kids loved doing the "Cleanest Toes" experiment and we turned it into a contest. I used 4 kits for 12 kids and they were able to share with few extras being purchased (from the grocery store). I combined it with the "Journey Into the Human Body" kit for the semester. We watched "Inside Ralphie" which is about germs and the human body to tie it all together. The only downside was that there aren't many experiments that produce immediate results. Most of them take an hour or days, considering you're growing germs. It wouldn't be fun for a child under 5. Note: don't prepare your agar until you need it. Germs are attracted to it and will cause it to be a gross surface before you even add your experiment to it. ... show more
