  • Doesn't contain everything in the photo, extra purchases needed
Style: Germs
Didn't come with everything shown in the picture. Like others have mentioned, the kit you receive has the dishes and test tubes but little else. Be prepared to purchase agar powder, antibiotics (?), yeast, cotton swabs, etc. needed for the experiments. My guess is that the manufacturer "updated" (downgraded?) this kit to a new version at some point and the seller is using an old, incorrect photo. Needless to say my kids were very disappointed when it arrived and I had to explain we needed to order extra items to make it work. In hindsight, considering what I paid for this, I probably should have just ordered a real set of petri dishes and test tubes so they wouldn't be toy quality like the ones that come in this kit. ... show more

  • Germ Kit DOES NOT come with agar!
Style: Germs
The description of the individual science kits was lacking. However, there was a picture of the Germ Kit shown with a packet of agar, yeast, bouillon, and antibacterial ointment. NONE of those things come in the kit. They may have at one point based on questions asked previously in which a responder said there was enough agar for the five petri dishes, but my kit has none and the "materials" list shows only the hardware is included in the kit. I am very disappointed to have spent $19 on a kit filled with plastic that I have at home! BTW, you also have to supply your own yeast, sugar, and flour for the experiments. ... show more

  • Do real science with your little kids!
Style: Germs
This is a great way to introduce elementary aged kids to microbiology. The agar you get is indeed the real agar used in biology classes, and as long as you follow the very simple instructions you should be able to grow bacteria without any issues. They also include several simple yeast experiments and all of the materials required that arent basic pantry staples are supplied. They even provide data tables to help your young scientist collect data. The only improvement that I would suggest would be allowing your child to come up with an open-ended question to test. We skipped one of the given experiments and came up with our own experiment using the materials provided. Overall, this is a great kit for the price and your kids will be so excited about culturing bacteria. This is also great for kids who need some motivation to wash their hands! ... show more

  • Awesome - plus quick fix for flat volcano!
Style: Erupting Volcanoes
Our son loves this! Some may get discouraged since the volcano arrives flat because the way it is shipped in the box. Here is the quick fix, which we learned from forming many a sports mouthpiece over the years: 1) Get two large pots (both large enough to fit expanded volcano inside); 2) Fill each with enough water to cover entire volcano; 3) Heat one pot to close to a boil, the other pot should be filled with cold water; 4) Remove hot pot from heat and dip volcano in hot water for 10 seconds; 5) Remove volcano from hot water (use tongs if you have them) and place on counter; 6) Immediately mold into circular form by rotating two hands around the sides (careful it's a little hot at this point); 7) After molding for a few seconds (like 5) dip into cold pot for 10 - 15 seconds to hold the form. 8) Remove from cold water - and it should look like a round volcano! 9) You may have to repeat the steps a few times - we did (but only because we tend to be perfectionists :-) Hope this all helps! Happy Holidays folks! ... show more

  • Not good
Style: Germs
I thought the kit would be complete, but it lacked some essentials. You need yeast for half the experiments so had to get that, which is not a huge deal that’s common. But then you need Petri dishes for the other half and it didn’t come with the gel stuff. So I had to figure out what it was and buy that too. I’d say one experiment worked. The rest were failures. I’d say user error contributed sure, I did them with a 5 year old. But some of the super easy basic ones didn’t work either and they should have. That combined with having to buy extra stuff myself made it a not good product in my opinion. If it came complete I’d be more ok about the outcomes. ... show more

  • Teacher and Home Educators Says "Excellent Kit."
Style: Dinosaurs
I am a former teacher and current homeschool educator. I am very picky about science kits and generally most fall short of my expectations. This kit, however, is a wonderful jumping off point for an inquiry into dinosaurs. This kit used hands on activities to teach about the different types of fossils, carnivore and herbivore teeth, the different time periods, habitat, etc. The final project culminated in a 3D dinosaur puzzle to build and paint. The ideas were creative and I appreciate someone else doing the planning, material gathering, prep work for me! Some extension activities we did: made a full sized timeline and the children drew with sharpie and watercolorsd dinos to add to the timeline (simple tutorials can be found on the Art for Kids Hub website), we dissected owl pellets to recreate a paleontologist's thought processes, we printed a life sized Triceratops footprint and discussed perimeter, surface area and measuring, I drove my car at 15 mph and my son chased it to experience in a concrete way the speed of a T-rex, we measured dinosaur sizes on the wall and floor and marked them with tape, we made dino eggs out of paper mache, designed dino habitats/diorama for our Schleich dinos with materials from the dollar store, talked about ecosystems and food chains, learned about Mary Anning and sang "She Sells Seashells," etc etc. Have fun with your dino kit and enjoy learning with your child! ... show more
