Description

“Absolutely essential reading for every LEGO fan.” —BlocksThe definitive history of LEGO, based on unprecedented access to the company’s archives and rare interviews with the founding family who still owns the company"This book tells the story of how my family built the LEGO brand." —Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen, former President/CEO of the LEGO Group and 3rd generation ownerIt’s estimated that each year between eighty and ninety million children around the globe are given a box of LEGO, while up to ten million adults buy sets for themselves. Yet LEGO is much more than a dizzying number of plastic bricks that can be put together and combined in countless ways. LEGO is also a vision of the significance of what play can mean for humanity. This book tells the extraordinary story of a global company and a Danish family who for ninety years have defended children’s right to play—and who believe grown-ups, too, should make the time to nurture their inner child. The LEGO Story is built on Jens Andersen’s unique access to LEGO’s own archives, as well as on Andersen’s extensive conversations with Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen, former president and CEO of the LEGO group and grandson of its founder, Ole Kirk Christiansen.A riveting cultural history of changing generations’ views of childhood and the importance of play, The LEGO Story also a fascinating case study of how innovation and creativity helped leaders transform LEGO from a small carpentry business into the world’s largest producer of play materials and one of the most beloved brands in the world. Richly illustrated with never-before-seen photos from the family’s private archive, this is the ultimate book for fans of LEGO, revealing everything you ever wanted to know about the brand. • Just like I remember
I worked for Lego in the US from 1976-1989 in sales management. Great company, people and products. The book really isn’t geared for builders or lovers of the product but really is a case study for anyone who is or was in management. I met Kjeld several times in Denmark and the US and he actually joined in a poker game with us at a sales meeting, really a great guy. I lost touch with everyone from 1990 on so that part of the story was all new to me. This story should be taught to everyone in business school of how to and how not to make business decisions. Wish there had been a little more detail on the US market but for many years Germany was the biggest Lego market. ... show more

  • Great story of an iconic company
LEGO has been part of my life since the mid-60’s, and I really enjoyed the story behind the company that brought me a lot of joy.

  • Interesting corporate history
From the beginning to the current day, LEGO concentrated children's imagination and play. The products have grown from simple block sets to modern STEM sets with motors etc. The family company is now in its 5th generation.

  • Fascinating story of the LEGO brand and the family who built it
I love LEGO, and I’ll start by saying that it certainly makes the book much more engaging if you already enjoy the bricks! I was gifted this for Christmas (alongside a new Starry Night set), and I’ve really enjoyed reading it over the holidays. Tons of history that I’ve never heard: started as a small carpentry business in a farming village in Denmark, family owned and run, more fun details. The story of the company is great from a business perspective, and it was really interesting to read through the generations of the Kristiansen family as well. Jens Andersen tells a fantastic tale that anyone who grew up on LEGO will enjoy reading. The translation has kept the spirit of a great author. ... show more

  • Interesante pero
Como libro histórico cumple su misión aunque es poco emocionante versus otros libros de su tipo. Como libro de negocios se queda corto.

  • Printing is blurred on some pages
Can’t speak to the book yet… but I bought this for my husband and some pages are blurred like the printer messed up. We are returning for a new one and hope it was just our copy.

  • The book is OK...
It is very detailed and I am sorry to say a tad boring. I did not know much about Legos and this book tells the story. However, for a best seller it is easy to put down and do something else. Enter with caution.

  • Starts strong, then becomes a lackluster business book
This book has no idea what it wants to be. The first third or so is solid and interesting, covering the beginnings of the LEGO company and its founding family, and engagingly covering the development and evolution of their toys. And then it just . . . completely loses its way. when the history gets to about 1970 the book just becomes a laundry list of executive names (most telling, the only index in the book is an index of names) and business-school buzzwords (few of which are flesh-out enough to follow even if the reader wanted to). Though the subtitle is “How a Little Toy Sparked the World’s Imagination,”the book stops even pretending to talk about the toys themselves. I honestly flipped back to the jacket to see if I missed that this was intended to be a business management book (though it doesn’t work as that, either). In the end, the note that it’s the “authorized inside story of LEGO” seems closest to the mark. This is a book about the leaders of LEGO, and their approaches to that role. It somehow feels like a vanity project about a family that actually seems pretty humble. I wish this had been the book I was expecting, a book that talked about how creative people came up with LEGO bricks and evolved them into Technic and Friends, Ninjago and NEXO Knights, movie tie-ins, LEGOLAND, The LEGO Movie, LEGOMasters (some of these aren’t even mentioned.). Instead it was a big letdown and disappointingly failed to capture - or even engage with - the joy of LEGO. ... show more
