  • Good for small business owners
It’s a good book with a detailed guide

  • A top-shelf tax planning guide that you'll find referring to over and over again...
Many people try their hand at various Do-It-Yourself projects over the course of their lives: home improvement, decorating, even making their own soap and shampoo! One place few DIY'ers dare to tread, however, is into the domain of tax planning. Bizarre terminology, complex instructions, and seemingly contradictory rules discourage most of us from venturing too far into this arena. This is a real shame, because, if done right, the rewards of good tax planning can be quite substantial. So what's the best way to approach it? Well, I’d suggest that the first key step is to gain a broad overview and understanding of the various tax-saving strategies available. I believe there is no quicker, simpler, or finer way of getting that overview than to read this book by Mark Kohler. This book, together along with his other work, "What Your CPA Isn’t Telling You", give you an extensive foundation for some of the most effective tax-saving strategies out there, as well as a solid mental model of how to think about tax planning in general. These two go far beyond the usual ‘here's a random list of 1000 deductions’ tax books. They actually give you some very useful insights into the various aspects of tax planning, and can even help you form a cohesive game plan for yourself once you’ve seen and understood how all of the pieces fit together. The book itself is chock-full of quality information. As you study the dozens of strategies and examples provided, you can't help but get excited as you start seeing the many different ways you can use the tax code to save yourself some serious cash. Reading, studying, and assimilating this info will dramatically raise your 'tax IQ'. This lets you better communicate and work with your trusted tax advisor to start implementing some of these ideas right away. Beyond that, just being knowledgeable about these topics can be extremely advantageous, as you’ll know the right questions to ask your tax pro whenever a key decision needs to be made. While a single book can’t and doesn’t replace the need for an experienced tax professional, what it can do is give you a seat at the table; a partnership of sorts with your trusted tax advisor, and even a voice in co-creating and mapping out an overall tax plan, specific and unique to your own personal situation. Finally, as you read through the book, it becomes readily apparent that the quality of knowledge and wisdom imparted comes from an author who is both a practicing attorney and CPA, as well as a great writer. That’s to say that the material is very readable and easily understood, but without sacrificing the technical nature of the subject matter. That’s no mean feat, and in my own personal view, it’s a pretty rare and extremely valuable combination. I can't recommend it highly enough! ... show more

  • Mark's best book to date!
I saw Mark speak twice to two different San Diego investment clubs in the past 8 months or so. The first time was so good I went out of my way to see him a second time at a club that I normally don't attend. He somehow manages to make talking about accounting and tax issues fun and funny, probably because he is comfortable in his own skin, cracks a lot of jokes, and embraces his own inner dorkiness if you will. :) I read his first two books and gleaned quite a bit from them, when I saw that this third books was available, I bought the kindle version the first day and read the brunt of it over a weekend. I think this is his best book to date. He has the ability to take what can be complex subjects and boil them down to the nuts & bolts to get you started. I think many people who get into real estate or start a small business spend so much time thinking about their product, they neglect to look at the tax and legal consequences of various strategies or of, worse, not really having a strategy. In today's litigious environment, it would be insane to do business without the proper protections in place, and Mark does a very good job of explaining the pros and cons of various legal entities and which entities are best suited to which types of businesses. There is a saying by one of the original real estate speakers that if you think education is expensive, just try ignorance. In this case, the $9.99 kindle version price is absurdly cheap for the education he imparts, many of the tips in the book could save you thousands of dollars or even avoid you getting ruined in a lawsuit. I highly recommend this book, especially for those getting started in their own business/real estate who haven't established any asset protection plan. Great stuff! ... show more

  • Good, easy read
This was such an easy read I can’t say anything bad. This book gives a loose overview of some topics to discuss with your CPA and/or attorney so you have a baseline to understand where to start & what topics to investigate more if you think they sound valuable for your situation. This book generally covers a wide range of topics while being laid out in a very easy to read manner. I definitely found value in this book for the price and will refer to it in the future as I continue my studies. Happy with this purchase. ... show more

  • Awesome Book
I had been watching Mark Kohler's YouTube videos for a few years and finally decided to buy one of his books. I'm glad I did! My husband and I have small businesses and a short-term rental property in addition to our W-2 jobs. We were already utilizing a lot of basic tax strategies, but we wanted to up our game and at the same time reduce our audit risk. This book has taught us so much. I'm planning to buy it for our friend who recently started a small business and was able to quit his day job. ... show more

  • New business owner
I purchased this book in conjunction with a few others to help me be sure I have well-rounded view of things. This book is good for what it is...even though I have heard some of this before, I like that I one centralized place to help me map the start of my business. The author even talks about health plans and retirement. A good book to have on hand, even if you do have a person; it's always good to do your own reading. ... show more
