Winner of the 2021 AASECT Book Award!Winner of the SSTAR Professional Book Award 2021!Winner of the SASH Media Award 2022!The Leather Couch provides a comprehensive overview of the BDSM and kink community and guides clinicians on how to meet the unique relational and mental health needs of its members. The text offers a 101-style introduction to BDSM before delving into topics ranging from intersectionality within the kink community, to conducting a kink-affirming risk assessment and how to discern between domestic violence and consensual power-exchange. The author explores differential diagnoses and clinical concerns that are relevant to health care providers, including social workers and therapists as well as primary care physicians and sex educators. Interwoven throughout with real-world case studies, each chapter presents practical suggestions, tools, and handouts the reader can use to inform their practice and serve clients in ways that meet the needs of each individual, couple, or partnership. Written in a conversational, accessible style for clinicians and members of the BDSM community alike, The Leather Couch is the go-to resource for any mental health professional or educator looking to transform their practice from kink aware to kink affirming. • Extremely Helpful with Kinky Clients
This book was recommended for my private practice with clients. I find myself referring back to it when working with couples.

  • Invaluable resource for clinicians - a must read!
This is the best clinical book I've ever read. The Leather Couch is an invaluable resource for all clinicians! It is wonderfully written and organized and provides helpful guidance for attending, understanding, and affirming our clients. For an already BDSM/kink-affirming therapist, this book provides a supportive framework and structure to help inform treatment. All graduate programs training clinicians should suggest this book to its students to read and any new clinician would greatly benefit from the detailed and explanatory information. The Leather Couch sings the song of "Don't yuck their yum" in a masterful, beautiful, and respectful way, and it was a pleasure to read. I am thankful for the hard work of the author and all those who participated in telling their stories contained within. I am proud to have this book on my bookshelf from now on. • Such a great book!
This book is VERY helpful and concise. Stefani covers so many areas for the clinician, who may not specialize in Kinky clients, to actually help these clients. I 100% recommend this book!!

  • The only book out there like this!
If you are a therapist working with Kinky clients this books is a must. It is applicable for people who have limited knowledge of the population or folks who already know a fair amount. Its presented in an easy to understand and approachable way.

  • If you work with Kink clients, it's a must read.
I think this book can be invaluable both for clinicians to familiarize themselves and to give to clients to read. We often pathologize kink when we are working with our clients. This not only familiarizes clinicians with the wide and varied types of kinks, but gives background and context. The author is unusually clear and not over academic-sounding which makes it a pleasure to read. ... show more

  • A must-read for clinicians working -or wanting to work the with- the kink community!
The Leather Couch is a wonderfully written, comprehensive book for clinicians looking to gain a greater understanding of kink and bdsm. It is not enough to just be “kink-aware”, but to be educated, affirming, curious and non-pathologizing in our practice with kinky clients; this book is a much needed addition to our field! Thank you, Stefani, for your contribution and dedication to this work. ... show more

  • A complete guide to understanding the BDSM and kink community
I am so glad that Stefani has completed this book. As this is an area that I am not well-versed in, it was very refreshing to be taken through some of the background and considerations to take when working individuals in this community. I feel more empowered and definitely am more comfortable exploring these areas with clients now, thank you! ... show more
