Description

Hockey’s bad boy needs to clean up his reputation… Bennett James has built his career at being the best, on and off the ice, and now it’s come back to bite him. The media has turned against him, and with a near career-ending injury, he needs to clean up his act and prove that he’s serious about the game. For Bennett, working with his old coach at his alma mater feels like a step back, but it might be just what he needs. …and she’s just the girl to help him do it. Grace Wentworth has always been the good girl, and she’s tired of that stigma. She wants to prove that she can get down and dirty with the best of them. The problem? She doesn’t know how. Bennett will teach the good girl how to be bad, if she pretends to be his goody two-shoes girlfriend in front of the media. But what happens when the game becomes real? Read more

  • This is yet another great read by Micalea Smeltzer
This is yet another great read by Micalea Smeltzer. I have loved all of her books, and this one is no different. I usually read them as soon as they are released, but I had a baby a week before this one came out, so it put me a little behind. I'm so glad that I finally had the chance to read it though. I had problems putting it down. Grace is Olivia and Trace's daughter. She is daddy's princess. She's rich, but she doesn't act like it at all. Yes, she likes expensive things, but she's really down to earth and a little naive. She does have a big heart though and she sees the good in people. She's finally off to college. This book starts when she gets there for the first time and meets her roommate Elle. Who would have thought that getting a ride to Target, would change her life. Bennett is a pro hockey player. He was injured though, and his coach hates him. He's at his old college to train with his old coach to get back into shape to play again. He needs to change his image though. Honestly, he's a man whore. He needs a good girl "girlfriend" and Grace is perfect for that. She wants to learn to be bad, he's the best teacher for her. Bennett has a lot going on though with his career. I'm not going to get into it, but his coach is a total slime ball. I wish he would have hit Tanner. It would have been nice to see Trace apologize to him. This is a great read. I love these characters together. ... show more

  • good for the most part
I enjoy this author. This isn't the best I've read from her. But I still enjoyed the story. It was a very fast read that is definitely following the standard expectations of a college / fake dating scenario. Sometimes a book that follows the expected path is comforting to read. That was the case here. I really liked Bennett as a hero; he was flawed enough to show character growth, but not irredeemable. Grace, I liked for the most part, though she really disappointed me toward the end (as did her "friends"). And I didn't feel like there was enough story left to get her back in mine or the hero's good graces. I'm not even going to dwell on how I felt not sense of good closure. I am confused about the old reviews on this book (2016) when the publication date indicates it was released in 2022. A little research shows that this is a rewrite of a previously released book under a different title (an author note would've been helpful). Since this is a re-release, I wish more time had been taken to give the couple a better ending instead of the abrupt one. I wanted to see them work through the thing that separated them and address her family's undeserved treatment of him instead of it all being swept under the rug. It really would've taken a book that was 80% 5 stars and put it at 100% 5 stars. ... show more

  • The Game Plan
Even though the main characters didn’t have nearly enough chemistry to make a real go of their relationship, I was still pretty invested in the storyline… right up until the last 10% of the book. What in the third act break-up shenanigans was that?! Of all the reasons why they could’ve separated for a time, this was the last thing I’d expect. Not in an intriguing way either, just a true “WTF?!” Moment for the reader. We also get zero closure for the poor MMC who was treated abominably by the FMC and her family. The bones of the story were decent, but the body was poorly constructed. ... show more

  • A+
Finally a book to take me out of my reading funk! I’ve read several of Micalea’s books, though not all of them yet. And the vast majority are great! This is the same! We get the whole fake relationship trope that is done so well and then watch as their relationship just simply blossoms. Grace and Bennett are just one of those couples that makes each other better. They take each other out of their comfort zone and helps each other grow. My next favorite thing in this book is Grace’s relationship with Elle. Complete opposites. But I loved reading how they interact with each other. ... show more

  • An amazing and entertaining third installment!
I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed reading the third installment in the Us series. I wasn’t a huge fan of the first two books, but The Game That Breaks Us has by far been my favorite one yet. I really enjoyed reading Grace and Bennett’s story, and thought they were amazing main characters. I liked their personalities and chemistry together, and how their relationship slowly progressed from friends to something more meaningful. I loved that the book was told from both Grace and Bennett’s alternating POV, and how hockey was incorporated into the story as well. I always enjoy a good sports romance, and this one definitely fit the bill. It had just the right amount of humor, romance, and hockey to make it entertaining to read. I loved Micalea Smeltzer’s writing style, and how she told Grace and Bennett’s story. The previous two books in the series were written in first person/past tense, while The Game That Breaks Us was written in first person/present tense. I enjoyed this style of writing much better and thought Micalea did an excellent job with every aspect of the story. Many of the secondary characters were wonderful as well, and I loved getting to see a lot of familiar faces from past books by the author. There were certain parts of the book that I didn’t care for, but overall it was an amazing read and I’m extremely glad I didn’t give up on this series. I was also thankful the conflict wasn’t too terribly long, but I did find it a little unrealistic that Grace believed it so easily. I was very happy with the ending, however I had hoped the epilogue would have gone farther into the future. But I have a feeling there will be more books in the Us series, and I will definitely be looking forward to reading them if there are! ... show more
