  • Works Well, But Installing Wasn't Very Easy
I bought this starter after watching a YouTube video on how to replace the electric starter on an old Ariens (20+ years) snow blower. It is identical to one I bought from a different seller, then returned because it arrived broken (a loose screw rattling around inside?) and with an extension cord that didn't fit into the starter box. This one arrived intact, with the same extension cord that didn't fit, and also, the seller forgot to include the mounting hardware. I notified the seller, who sent a double set of hardware parts immediately. I should have installed the starter myself, because the replacement involved removing and replacing only two screws and two bolts, but my male neighbor insisted on helping his female neighbor. (I really didn't mind, because the starter motor, itself, is heavy and so it's awkward to hold it with one hand while removing and replacing bolts with the other hand, and I'm not a weight lifter.) Being the kind of man who doesn't ask for, want, or use directions, my neighbor had not watched the video that I had emailed to him, and he arrived with no tools. A Phillips head screwdriver and a torx screwdriver were the only tools needed, and the video had even specified the sizes. I'm not sure why he though I'd have the proper tools (which he could not have known because he didn't watch the video), but I really didn't have what was needed. My torx set is bits for a drill, and he didn't want to use it. Then, instead of removing the bolts that secure the starter to the housing, he removed the three bolts that hold the starter together! He also was about to remove the gas tank to access two rear bolts that APPEAR to anchor the starter, but I insisted that in the video, it showed that the starter slid out from under these bolts, and they didn't have to be removed. Fortunately, he listened. He replaced the bolts that held the starter together with new hardware--which probably was a mistake, because they are flanged, were not needed, and look stupid. The included hardware for mounting the starter didn't fit properly, so we had to reuse the old bolts. Without a torx screwdriver, a socket wrench had to be used, and it kept hitting the gas tank. So he used a Phillips screwdriver, which took forever. This has turned into a review of my "helpful" neighbor, instead of the starter! The bottom line is that when the starter was finally installed, we plugged in another extension cord, and it started right up. It snowed a few days later, and it also started immediately. So... except for hardware that was missing, that didn't fit after being sent, anyway, and an extension cord that is nice but can't be used with this starter (because the plug is larger than the opening in the starter box), it ended up being a good purchase. Would I recommend it? It seems like one manufacturer in China makes most of the electric starters of its genre that are sold on Amazon, because they are identical. The only difference is the seller and the "brand" of starter in the listing (though they really are unbranded). Would I recommend this starter. Surprisingly, yes, because it works, and the price is amazingly low, relative to the cost of an OEM starter, which is no longer made for my ancient snow blower, anyway. Some advice: Be sure to google YouTube on replacing an Ariens electric starter, first, or you might make the same mistakes in judgement that my neighbor made. And be sure you have the right torx screwdriver, if you don't want to spend an hour lying on a freezing cold concrete garage floor, doing a job that really should take no more than 10 minutes. Have a can of WD-40 handy, to loosen up screws and bolts that haven't been touched for 20 years. Most of all, don't burn up your original electrical starter in the first place, by forgetting to open the fuel valve before attempting to use the electric start! If I had remembered to do that, instead of repeatedly pushing the starter button until the poor thing died, the original starter probably would have lasted another 20 years (and possibly outlived me as well). ... show more

  • Starter worked great.
Starter worked great!

  • Easy to install and worked well
My starter died as i was putting my snowblower away for the season. The replacement that just failed had been used for 10 years and was the same as this one so bought another one . Installed easily and started the blower fine. I can only hope it will last as long but time will tell. Live in southern New England so dosen't get that much use. As someone else noted, the extension cord supplied does not fit into the receptical of the starter. The cord end is too large. I can use the existing cord I had but if you need to use the cord that comes with it you will have to modify it or buy another cord. ... show more

  • Wired shorted inside switch housing
Update: after testing further I found that the hot wire that goes to the switch was pinched and pierced by the screw that attaches it to the snow blower cover. I was able to repair and it is working fine now. Spent several hours testing and repairing to get this working properly. The positive and negative is backwards on this unit. Tried and tripped breaker as soon as I plugged it in. Plugged into a known outlet that has worked for years on all kinds of equipment. Tried to communicate directly could not find a way through Amazons system. ... show more

  • Easy fix
Do I replace my snowblower or the starter. Well with the turn of a few screws and a few bolts my old snowblower was as good as new. Yes, who doesn’t want a new machine, but if you’re a working person this is an easier and much cheaper option. It’s really not difficult to replace. If you can open and close a jar then you can easily do this ... show more
