To my knowledge this is TCL's first home projector, and they have clearly thought about the usage scenarios for most consumers which is likely offering a small, portable projector that can easily be moved from room to room and provides a decent full HD image. The added Google TV is also a plus point and likely an expectation for people in the days of streaming. The packaging is quite cool and not what I was expecting. It's a little like a styrofoam case with a thick woven strap for ease of carrying. It's not the lightest projector but far from heavy. The design reminds me of the LG Cinebeam Q though this has less design features to it. Like the LG the A1 has a built in stand which it calls the 'versagrip'. You can't angle it like other stands but you can use the versagrip to carry it around or use to angle it slightly off of a table. On the plus side I didn't need to worry about angles because the A1 does a good job of adjusting the image automatically with it's keystone, focus and correction feature. The image natively is 1080p which is full HD, it can playback 4K content but it will only render at the 1080p. The image is absolutely sharp enough to enjoy. I have been using a 120 inch screen and the image looks bright and vibrant at night. The brightness is only a disappointing 360 ISO lumens. That's definitely a low point and in this price range there are other brands offering brighter than this, though they are less well known and may not come with a standard warranty, plus they have their own shortcomings. The audio onboard is Dolby Audio compatible and the dual 8W speakers sound great. If you have a large room you might want to connect a soundbar but I have found it enjoyable in my den. The vocals are crisp and easy to understand. Bass is lacking which is to be expected given the size and price. As mentioned this runs Google TV which is ideal, as so many other projectors have Android TV which is a dated operating system and lacks Netflix. This does not have that issue. Using the included remote control I find everything to move and transition quickly which is nice. If Google TV doesn't have the content you want, you can connect pretty much anything to this via HDMi or over WiFi and Bluetooth. It has Google Cast built in which is another bonus feature. I think that for $499 (currently $399 with coupon) this is a solid projector with some great features. While it doesn't have a 4K image and it's not that bright, it's reliable and easy to use, plus you can just pack it up when not in use. ... show more
