  • The Closest Thing I’ve Seen to a Perfect TV (without breaking the bank)
Size: 75 inches Style: TV only
I bought the 75-inch model (2024 model) two months ago. For months, I read professional reviews online, and couldn’t decide among this, the Hisense U8, and (going a step up) the LG C4. I eventually ruled out the C4 because the extra $800 or so for the 77-inch model just wasn’t worth it for whatever minor difference I might actually notice in contrast/blooming in certain scenes when I’m watching a movie. I then ruled out the Hisense because the 75-inch model uses a different panel than the other sizes, with worse contrast (although better off-axis viewing). That left the TCL, which was on my list in the first place for its brightness, fine contrast, and good sound quality. Keep in mind that high brightness does not mean that you’ll just be blinded by light all the time. Rather, certain things are very bright, such as sunsets and headlights, for example. So much so, that it adds almost a 3D aspect to the viewing experience. I find the picture to be stunning, and easy to dial in. I set it to “movie,” and move the color temperature to “warm.” I turn on the motion control, but adjust only the judder reduction, to 1. I turn on the micro contrast to high as well. To me, that’s the most natural and crisp picture for just about everything. It’s not great at upscaling low bitrate or SD content, but that is not a priority for me anyway. I’ve looked for blooming in many different scenes, and only in the most extreme instances of contrast — with a bright light moving in a pitch-black environment — do I see very minor blooming. You have to be looking for blooming like a hawk though to detect any lack of total blackness in the black areas of the screen. The contrast is striking, the colors look natural, and the picture can be as bright as you need it to be. I think the sound is great. Booming, even… and the dialogue is crisp and easy to understand when you set it to “voice.” Some reviews say “get a soundbar,” but those reviewers must have very high standards, because I can’t imagine needing more sound, unless you have a massive room or expect to feel like you’re in an IMAX theater. But you may demand more from audio than I do. The interface for Google TV is very good and responsive, and I don’t notice any lag to speak of. I’ll note that I connect the TV directly with an Ethernet cable just to ensure a constant, fast connection without interference. I just have nothing bad to say about this TV. It looks and sounds great. My last TCL TV was still working fine after seven years, and hopefully this one will too. Worth every penny! ... show more

  • My Favorite Purchase of the Year!
Size: 85 inches Style: TV only
Bought this TV to fit in a remodel planned for the near future. Our previous TV was a 72-inch, and the jump to 85 inches has been great. So we picked 85-Inch QM85 QLED 4K Smart QD-Mini LED TV by TCL. Picture quality is impressive, with a noticeable improvement when using streaming services like Netflix—it's perfect for binge-watching. The bright, clear picture and excellent black levels really stand out. The bezels are very thin, the stand is sturdy, and installation was easy. I'm not an audiophile, but the speakers are good enough that we moved our soundbar to a different TV. Another bonus is that this model is more affordable than similar 85-inch TVs from brands, making it a great value for the quality it offers. ... show more

  • Amazing value, fantastic picture quality - and you can make it a dumb TV if you want
Size: 65 inches Style: TV only
This was a birthday gift to myself, and so I decided to spend more than I might have on a TV. But it was well worth it. Having had several TV’s in this size range, but more towards the “budget” end of the price range, the difference is significant. The black levels on this TV are amazing, and the brightness is fantastic. It seamlessly adjusts based on room brightness so that it’s not blasting us at night but is easily visible during bright sunlight. One of my biggest concerns with this TV was the ability to turn off as many of the “smart” features as possible. I have an external Roku box and when TCL dropped Roku in favor of Google, I was quite upset until I realized that you can set up the TV without the Google services. During initial setup, just choose “Basic setup” and after the setup is complete and your TV has auto-updated, you can either block it on your router or change the WiFi info so that it can’t connect to the internet – instant dumb TV. I can still use my Roku Ultra box connected to HDMI1 and everything is great. That was the first part and it was easier than I thought. The second part – turning off all of the picture enhancements – wasn’t quite as easy. My wife hates any kind of motion enhancement, it provokes extremely strong “soap opera effect” vibes and she won’t watch it. With this TV, I was able to lock my Roku box in 4k HDR mode and then tell the TV to be in “PC” mode where it doesn’t do any motion enhancements. This works very, very well. It still does 1080p upscaling and smoothing so 1080p (and lower, I have some 480p movies as well) look better than they ever have, but no motion smoothing, frame interpolation, or anything like that. My only disappointment with this TV is the TCL remote. I use an old Logitech Harmony remote to control my AV equipment and TCL only has limited options. I can’t directly choose HDMI1, for example, or directly choose Picture Mode “PC” or even directly power on or off – only power toggle. Because I will be using this TV myself, it shouldn’t be a problem, but if the input got changed by accident or the power got out of sync with what the Harmony thought it was, it could be really annoying for someone else to try to fix without the original remote (which is put away in a drawer). Even my old Yamaha receiver, I can directly select which input, which DSP effect, and lots of other options directly. But, that is a relatively small issue. The picture quality is fantastic and that was what I really wanted. For the price (it was 40% off when I bought it) – I don’t think anything else comes close. ... show more
