  • POSEIDON VERSUS ACHILLES...WHO WINS?
As an introduction, I'm a lifelong racquet sports enthusiast who owns 15 pickleball paddles of all shapes, sizes, materials, and price ranges. Now that I'm retired, I play indoor/outdoor pickleball 5 days a week, mostly with fellow 3.0 to 3.5 Intermediates. Insum has been high on my list of favorite companies for some time. They consistently produce premium pickleball paddles and peripherals at reasonable price points. Their caring customer service, excellent packaging, bundled-in extras, and generous warranties are other big turn-ons for me. I own and have used three of their paddles: the Insum Try, T-500, and T-700. When I first spotted the T-800/1000 paddles on Amazon, I was very excited and snapped up both of them. Aesthetically and statistically they are very worthy successors to the existing Insum lineup. One reminds me of a Vatic Pro Flash, while the other mirrors a Joola Perseus, two top-tier paddles that appear on many Wish Lists. After play-testing both of them extensively, here are my findings... POSEIDON T-1000: Its resemblance to the extremely popular and well-regarded Joola Ben Johns Perseus is obvious. Same elongated shape, with rounded upper edges to optimize the sweet spot and aerodynamics. Likewise, surface dimensions (16.5" x 7.5"), handle length (5.5"), grip circumference (4.25"), and coloration are alike. Plus the same technical specs (and Gen-2 buzzwords): Charged Surface Technology; CFS (Carbon Friction Surface) 16mm; thermoformed unibody construction; foamed edges; soft, anti-slip grip; etc. Also, the Control/Power/Spin ratings were equivalent at 94/95/96. The differences between the two begin with the Toray Japanese raw carbon fiber used in each. The Perseus (as well as its Pickletech clone, the Kronos Bond) is produced with the standard T-700. The Insum Poseidon uses a higher-grade (and more expensive) T-1000. It is lighter and more durable. The result is my Poseidon weighed in at just 7.8 ozs, with a corresponding super-light "swing weight" of 100g, by my estimate. These stats are superior to the 16mm Perseus, with its average static weight of 8.1 ozs and swing weight of 115. If Joola employed its "Swift Technology" (as on its C2, the hybrid-shaped Ben Johns Hyperion model) to make a lighter 16mm Perseus, then the Insum Poseidon would be the resulting product. In fact, the Poseidon is indeed "swifter" than any other paddle in my arsenal. I find it to be most effective during fast-hands battles at the kitchen. Its insanely light swing weight allows me to maneuver my racquet effortlessly at the kitchen for blocks, dinks, speed-ups, backhand flicks, punch volleys, lobs, and put-aways. Anyone (like me) suffering from hand/wrist/arm/joint weakness due to tendonitis or arthritic pain will truly appreciate the featherweight Poseidon. The T-1000 surfaces are pleasingly gritty, letting me shape my topspin drives, and impart extremely effective sidespin and underspin when needed. No problem with 3rd shot drops, slices, or drives. And my top-spin serves are more effective than ever. The ribbed grip of the Poseidon felt extremely plush and comfortable in my hand. Although the description says the grip circumference is 4.25", the raised ridges make it slightly thicker. I ended up applying one of the included Insum over-grips. It enhanced the circumference to 4.5", perfect for holding onto the handle with minimal twisting. Some players I know choose to beef up their T-1000 by adding lead tape strips to the throat area (7 and 5 o'clock positions), and/or near the upper rounded corners (10 and 2 o'clock). Doing that increases stability (twist rate), power, and sweet spot, but it does impact the low swing weight. I, on the other hand, am foregoing the lead to keep the Poseidon as light as possible. I did apply the new Insum Edge Protection Tape (26mm width, and gray-colored, to perfectly complement the paddle face) around the edge guard. These two add-ons bring the total static weight to a mere 8.1 ozs. Not only is the Poseidon bargain-priced compared to the Perseus, its generous 12-month warranty towers over the chintzy 30-days offered by Joola. But wait...there's more! While the Perseus is packaged inside a cheap piece of cardboard, with no paddle cover included, the Poseidon is housed within a sturdy and attractive gift box, and includes a full-sized, leather case. It's not just a sleeve, but a zippered cover for the entire paddle, (top-to-bottom, including handle), similar to the one Selkirk advertises for $20. Additionally, Insum bundles in a few extra goodies that I found to be useful and of high-quality: 2 outdoor pickleballs, 3 premium over-grips, and a carbon fiber cleaner/eraser. So, altogether, about 40 bucks worth of bonus "stuff." ACHILLES T-800 I own a 16mm Vatic Pro Prism Flash and it's one of my favorite control paddles. I was looking to upgrade to VP's thermoformed version, the 16mm Flash. An alternative I had in mind was the Six-Zero Double Black Diamond, which is a more muscular version of the Flash. But, I finally settled upon the Insum Achilles T-800, and I'm very satisfied with my choice. The Achilles, with its aerodynamic hybrid (Hyperion style) shape, has everything the Flash and DBD have. But instead of standard T-700 raw carbon fiber, the Achilles is made with the superior Toray T-800 carbon fiber. Which begs the follow-up question...why aren't more companies besides Insum using higher grades of raw carbon fiber in the design and manufacture of their top-tier paddles? Well, higher cost is one obvious answer. Profit margins have been steadily dropping in this overly competitive market, so manufacturers cut costs by using T-700, a strong but less expensive material. Secondly, although T-800 and T-1000 are lighter and more durable grades of raw carbon fiber, they seem to have a reputation of being too brittle. Honestly, I cannot comment on the science here, as I am not a materials engineer. What I can say is that I've been banging away hard with both the Poseidon and Achilles paddles for many, many hours, and I've seen no degradation whatsoever in the grittiness, plushness, or stability of their surfaces. Should that change down the road, and I spot any evidence of delamination, disbonding, or core corruption in either paddle, I will be happy to update this review. Needless to say, it does inspire tremendous confidence in me that Insum stands behind each of these paddles with a generous 12-month warranty. The Achilles paddle is so well-balanced that there is no need to add lead tape; the stock version plays perfectly, as is. My current setup, which I am totally pleased with, has as its only add-ons an Insum over-grip, plus the new Insum Edge Protection Tape (with the gorgeous "Heartrating-Black" design that perfectly coordinates with the paddle's aesthetic). Altogether, my T-800 weighs in at 8.4 ozs, with an estimated swing weight of 114, which is on par with the 16mm Vatic Pro Flash or the Six-Zero DBD. The Achilles is packaged with all the same bonus goodies I've already described above. It is less expensive than the Poseidon, but choosing which one to buy will boil down to personal preference. The Achilles is more of a control paddle, with Control/Power/Spin ratings of 96/94/95. It is a slightly more aerodynamic and less poppy paddle compared to the Poseidon. Truthfully, the differences between these two outstanding racquets are subtle. I double-checked, and both Achilles and Poseidon are definitely on the USA Pickleball "Approved" list. I will conclude this lengthy review by answering the question posed in my subject line: POSEIDON VERSUS ACHILLES...WHO WINS? Will it be the Greek God, or will it be the Trojan Warrior? Honestly, it's a win-win situation! I go to the club with both racquets in my bag. Whenever I am looking for better control of my drops and dinks, or I'm in the mood for the aerodynamic advantages of a hybrid-shaped (Hyperion style) paddle, I pull out the Achilles. In contrast, I often crave the advantages that an elongated paddle provides. For instance, whenever I'm looking for more pop, or power, or a bigger sweet spot, or those extra few millimeters of paddle real estate to avoid mishits...in such cases the lighter & longer Poseidon is my preferred weapon of choice. Honestly, I'm in love with both of these first-rate racquets! In sum (pun intended!), I've found nothing to criticize about any aspect of the Insum Poseidon T-1000 or Achilles T-800. Both paddles are praiseworthy, easily deserving 5-star ratings and my strongest recommendation. ... show more

  • Excellent Paddle
Great control. Great spin. Generates enough power. The first time I played with this paddle, I gave half of my other paddles away (I owned six, as I was searching for the right one). I’ve probably played with 10+ paddles and this one will be my go to for the foreseeable future. The balls, wrap, case, and eraser it comes with are a nice added bonus. ... show more

  • FANTASTIC Value
The first thing that struck me was the premium packaging accompanying this paddle. Very "Apple-ish" in presentation. That CAN be a red flag to wrap garbage with a pretty bow, but once you use this paddle, you'll realize that this paddle is more than worthy of its lofty boxing. If you're getting this paddle for yourself, you'll receive an excellent Gen2 paddle that is priced consistent to its competitors (139.99 at time of review with a $30 coupon bringing it to $99.99). This $90ish point makes this an outstanding value. For this you receive a quality paddle, eraser, overgrip wraps (3), and a full racket, PU leather protective case. The paddle plays very well. Great balance of pop and control and a carbon fiber face that imparts excellent spin on the ball. My paddle weighed in at 8.1oz/232gr, which is on the heavier (albeit slightly) side for pro level paddles. That said, this plays plenty quick at the kitchen for hand battles, speed ups and resets and placement/touch are great with the INSUM Achilles. If you are looking for a gift for your favorite pickleballer, look no further. This is a big deal as I've received "gift" paddles that were well intentioned, but not worth of hang tag space in an outlet store. With the INSUM Achilles, you're gifting a a quality paddle that most would love to have in their bag in a package that is second to none. ... show more

  • Nice paddle that procides great control
First, this paddle is presented nicely unpacked. It comes in a great package with two pickleballs, an overgrip and a pickleball paddle eraser and a great quality case. I like the amenities it comes with, it was a nice touch in a nice box. On to the paddle itself, the handle is very comfortable offers great grip, no slip. Because of the textured surface, it does give me great control of the ball and allows me to place some nice spin on it when i need to. I do have another paddle I do prefer that is graphite, comes in a bit lighter and has a better sweet spot than this. What makes that better as well is it was cheaper than this paddle. Even though you would be satisfied with the play of this paddle, I did remove a star simply because I believe there are better paddles out there for less money. ... show more

  • Not much power
Been playing 6 years. Expierment with a lot of paddles. Although, this looks like a 6.0 black diamond - plays nothing like it. Wanted a reasonable alternative to save the 6.0 for selected competition. I know I can hit the ball hard, therefore I select control paddles and modify them with lead and over grips. Tried everything with this paddle, still way to soft. No power on serves, drives, or put away shots. Paddle well constructed, good alternative to inexpensive fiberglass and graphite if you are a beginner and need control help. ... show more
