It is a great mouthpiece!!. I like how warm the sound is but I still get a good projection out of it. Usually the dark mouthpieces are resistant but I find the Syos more free blowing than the other mouthpieces I have played so far.

I like the fact that in the process of making these MPs there seems to be a lot more consistency. This MP plays well and always sounds good. I liked it so much I bought another one of a different color and both play and sound the same; nice. That has been the problem for a lot of off the shelf sax mouthpieces; lack of consistency. Even with some higher end, expensive mouthpieces. May be the way of the future for woodwind mouthpieces. If I were a mouthpiece manufacturer I would be worried. ... show more

After hearing positive comments about Syos sax mouthpieces from a few respected YouTube sax tutors I got the Syos Smoky and Spark models to try. These mouthpieces are made in France using 3D printing technology from SCAL3D, a new proprietary material developed by Syos for 3D printing. It may be non-traditional, but I don't miss the sulfur smell nor discoloration issues of hard rubber MPCs. Syos makes a host of mouthpieces, including many signature models, and you can even have them custom make a version for you at a reasonable cost. It arrived in a bag and box, without a cap or ligature. Syos makes a 3D printed ring ligature which wasn't included. The Vandoren Optimum ligature shown in my photos works well with it as does a Rovner Platinum. It came with an S branded cushion. You can see and feel the texture from the additive manufacturing process on the table which made me skeptical about how well it would seal a reed, but cane reeds do seal well, synthetic reeds not so much. The tip opening 7 is etched below the table and the Smoky name on the side, with a big S logo on back. The geometry of rails and tip looks very even. Comparing both models, the Smoky is about 1/4" shorter than the Flame, but because the shank is also shorter, they both fit around the same depth on the neck cork. It was easy to distinguish them by their sound. Smoky was indeed dark and warm, Spark bright and loud. Did I sound like Stan Getz? Not yet but I'm working on it. It was a joy to play, very free-blowing and easy to get to altissimo. Between the two Syos, I prefer the Smoky vibe more than the Spark, but it's great to be able to switch to the brighter sound when desired. I haven't tried all my different reeds yet-so far I like the way it pairs with a Nexus 2.5 reed. ... show more

After testing the Syos Tenor Saxophone Mouthpiece Spark Model, 7 Tip Opening (see my review) I got this Syos Tenor Saxophone Mouthpiece, Smoky Model 5 Tip Opening. I felt much more comfortable with this mouthpiece than with the Spark 7. The 5 Tip opening works well for me, I could produce nice warm and dark sound. But again, I had some problems to become comfortable to the material Syos uses in in the 3D printing process. I also miss the cap to protect the mouthpiece during transport and keep it clean when at home. I will get one of the Syos ligatures to make further testings. Like I already wrote, using different mouthpieces and ligatures is a personal decision and depends on a lot of factors. Having more than one to choose from is definitionally helpful. ... show more
