This auger works really well to aerate my compost bin as well as drill holes for planting. But if you have really hard soil or rocky soil it will not work for drilling holes for planting. It will only drill holes in very soft soil.

Initially it appeared we would really find this anger bit quite useful. We made a 4 hole pattern in our garden, which we then used a shovel to remove the dirt In preparation for setting fence posts. Unfortunately, on the 9th post hole, the auger snapped off. Another thing to consider would be to wear some light gloves. After a series of holes the auger bit was quite hot. ... show more

I got this auger for spike fertilizing about 40 trees. The ground was soft from the frost but I put in 3-4 spikes per tree with no problem. If your drill has a side screw on handle ... use it.
