  • A good buy
Color: Black
How does the new Suzuki MDG 4000TS ($3500) compare with the Yamaha Clavinova CVP 709 GP ($15000)? Clearly, the Clavinova is superior in terms of fit and finish and has more features. One cool Yamaha feature is the "follow lights" that no other brand has. But overall, the Clavinova advantages should not fetch it a couple of grand more than the Suzuki. At $3500, the Suzuki is a clear winner. After I paid for the Suzuki, I discovered that it is the same as the Medeli Digital Grand 1000 (2016). Infact the music software for the Suzuki says its made by Medeli so I suspect that the Medeli piano is rebadged and marketed as a Suzuki. This is not bad in itself because the Medeli was rated a very good piano in 2016. Medeli is available for about $400-500 lesser than the Suzuki on Amazon. You can negotiate a 15% discount on the Suzuki at other dealers fairly easily (not on Amazon). Now down to specifics It is easy to assemble. Took two expert piano movers about an hour to move it in and put it together. Instructions are clear. If you don't bring in experts you may need a handyman and 3-4 guys because its heavy. Use a thick blanket to protect the piano and the floor. The piano legs are strong and the bolts fasten securely. The lid prop is good but the lid hinges were loose right off the box and need to be tightened. The centering bolt on the lid fell off as soon as it was opened. The lid and most of the piano is made of cheap MDF covered in lacquer unlike an acoustic grand piano that uses real wood. The Clavinova too uses composite wood but the strength is superior. The dealer suggested that I fill up the small broken MDF part with wood filler putty, sand it down, refinish it with black touch up pen and screw back the hinge. (I preferred to do this over calling Suzuki) The bench is adequate and has a small storage compartment beneath the cushion that should come in handy. There are earphone outlets but it does not come with ear phones The keyboard has a good feel. May not match some great Acoustic pianos but definitely good at this price point. The touch screen is fairly large but not as large as the Clavinova CVP709 GP and not as user friendly It has all the essential USB / MIDI interfaces and connections. The speakers are rated at a higher wattage than the Clavinova but in reality I found the Clavinova speakers a bit louder and clearer. I have not yet tried to compose music. I hope it is compatible with software such as Finale, Garage band etc. The electronics make it especially attractive for my 10 year old son. He has figured out some functions on his own. Only the Grand suite software CD is included. I wish they included a CD showing how to use all the features. Hope someone makes one or posts something on Youtube. As of April 2017 we have only a few youtube postings on the Medeli Grand 1000. My sons music teacher likes this piano and he is good at composing and mixing music so it should be a lot of fun. The multi track sequencer and polyphony ensure that this will be a great system overall for the money. I intend to get a warranty because Suzuki is notorious for poor service based on reviews. If quality issues are addressed, this piano should sell very well and become popular among young music enthusiasts. ... show more

  • Not Worth It!
Color: Black
My biggest problem is that the piano often freezes when turning it on requiring constant rebooting by unplugging it. I called customer service for advice. After much difficulty getting through to them, I was asked to leave a voice message. No one returned my call. The money I spent for this piano could have been better spent elsewhere. ... show more

  • It's junk
Color: Black
The keys stick after only having a few years. Then it cost $800 to repair. Stay away from this Suzuki piece of junk. Mine is now in the trash bin.
