  • If being accurate is important to you, this is the budget best.
Once I actually learned to use a compass correctly I discovered none of my compasses were any good. I heard good reviews on these and now I will give one too. Learn about declination and teach yourself to walk a straight line to actually get to a specific destination. This little beauty will do the job. Nice little unit. ... show more

  • Affordable and accurate
Works well and is compact. Plastic seems a little lightweight but hopefully it will be durable. I like it and it’s a backup compass for me. If I was a daily user I would pay more for a better model. This fits the bill perfectly for an emergency backup though.

  • Seems like the lid will break off
Here’s the thing, I love the size, but the dial seems cheap which is not a huge deal and I can accept that because I think it will work fine. The lid is plastic and it really does not have a hinge it is bendable plastic I cannot see it lasting for more than 2-5 years at the absolute most. I sent it back and got the mc2 GLOBAL for 15 dollars more it was a no brainer. I will never be in South Africa but I have a10 year old and you don’t need to keep the compass absolutely level much easier to use. One or two bad readings and you could be lost, I will spend the extra 15 bucks for a compass that I may be able to pass down to my kids easier and safer to use and won’t definitely be broken in a couple of years. ... show more

  • Glad I Ignored the Negative Reviews
This compass is a bargain! It's a great size, and lightweight. It's both precise and accurate. I appreciate that it floats. The mirror is clear and can be used for signaling. For ~$20, you can't go wrong. Do not be put off by some of the negative reviews. I hesitated buying this one, but trusted my gut knowing this is from Suunto. I do not think it's fragile as some reviews have suggested. It'll hold up just fine being shoved in a pack, or taking falls on a trail. Though I'm sure if you smash it with some rocks you can break it. The mirror is also not cloudy as some have reported; you need to remove the film protecting it. If you want other features, or "higher quality" materials (which will weigh more too), then you're looking at something in a higher price point. ... show more

  • Really accurate
For the money, or for more money, you can't beat this one. It's accurate, light, and it floats. It's basic, but easy to use. I have a compass collection and this is going to be one that I use constantly.

  • Beware Build Quality and "Customer Support"
After a frustrating 30 minutes with Suunto “support,” I am returning the MCB compass. I had hoped for a light, sturdy, mirrored compass that was not made in China. What I got was a compass with a “plastic fold hinge” for the mirror, just a thin folded bit of plastic for a hinge, like you get on a toy or a clamshell package. These folded plastic hinges are prone to failure, as everybody knows, and everybody has experienced. The compass won’t open up flat, due to the plastic hinge. For use with a map, you have to push the mirror-side down against the map, which further stresses the plastic fold-hinge. It’s easy to foresee the plastic hinge allowing the mirror to separate from the compass…when you are 200 miles from civilization and need it for orienteering. Furthermore there is no Serial Number on the MCB compass. I contacted support to see what the duty rating was for this compass, particularly the hinge. They were clueless. They asked me for a picture of the hinge! (They don’t know what their own products look like?) “Support” insisted on having a Serial Number, but there is none on the compass. Then “support” said it must be on the package then. No, the package is just cheap plastic clamshell with no SN. So registering this product is impossible, without the SN. In addition, I had expected to see “Finland” printed somewhere on the compass…that’s why I pad 4x as much for a compass not made in China. But the country of origin is nowhere to be found. That, along with build quality being low, makes me suspicious that this is an offshore compass that is merely re-branded by Suunto. No, this is not a compass I’m entrusting with my life…back it goes. ... show more

  • Foggy mirror, otherwise ok.
I'm giving this item 4 stars because the mirror is so foggy that it is useless. I can still use the compass but I prefer my gear to be multifunctional and I wanted a signal mirror and self aid mirror. I guess I'll have to keep looking for that. At least it does point north.

  • Light, fragile, but effective.
The clear trade-off here is how flimsy the plastic feels so try not to drop it on any rocks or slam it in your pack. It works perfectly and will save a couple of ounces on it's heavier metal counterparts built for durability.
