  • I like this antenna
I like this antenna, the manufacturer makes no baloney claims, it is a bit on the spendy side but it is well built and easy to set up and use. This antenna is nothing like that "E-Z" thing (which probably no military ever used), you are not wasting any power in magic boxes which likely contain resistors or other lossy components, it needs no tuner because you tune it yourself in seconds, in one simple step. This is a great air travel companion, allowing you to fit an entire multiband QRP station in a small backpack or attache', and it screws together in a jiffy with no tools required, and it can be set up almost anywhere with virtually no impact, no need for trees or other support as are needed for wire antennas, it stands on it's own on flat ground with no need for stakes, no digging holes, no hammering nails or drilling screws, no climbing or shooting messenger lines into trees or anything of the sort. And then it just works, and works very well. It is essentially a screwdriver antenna without the electric motor, a very high Q and efficient design which, on 20M and above, delivers performance that can hardly be distinguished from a full size vertical. And vertical means low radiation angle, and if you want to work DX it will beat a wire antenna almost every time. ... show more

  • Yes, just buy it.
I'm pretty happy with this one. Easy set up, easy tune (with an Antenna Analyzer). I've been doing POTA and absolutely love this antenna, I'm getting 1.2 SWR and making 800+ mile contact on SSB @ 5 watts, and 1,000+ miles on Winlink @5 watts. I also purchased the 80m and 60m coils. They work great. I do encourage you to buy this rig. So here are some lessons I learned: Leave it on the ground! I mounted the antenna on a 30' FG telescoping mast, that was a waste of time as I got not so great SWR and had to raise and lower the thing to make adjustment. Just leave it on the ground and spread the radial wires out. The calibrated tuning ruler is just for ball-park. You really need a VNA or an Analyzer to really get the most out of this antenna. Great build quality. Haven't needed customer service, so I've got nothing on that. ... show more

  • Nice compact antenna with lacking customer support.
This is a nice little antenna package if you need compactness. It is a compromise antenna, so don't expect dipole performance. Also the little guide card to adjust the coil only gets you near where it needs to be. If you want proper SWR you will NEED an antenna analyzer or SWR meter at the least. Remember the lower the band the narrower the bandwidth. You will net got full band on 80M with this unit without having to adjust as you change freq. There are many things that can effect the proper position of the coil, especially on the lower bands. Receive is very good and TX is within range for such a small unit. Probably better for data than phone. If you need support, the only way to reach them is by slow email, even though their page states "Fast Customer Support: please email." It took me three weeks of emails to get a replacement for a defective part from less than 100 miles away, but it did finally arrive. Communication is very poor. If they send the part, they will not tell you and it takes them days to respond to your fast customer support emails. Customer support certainly could be better, but it is a well made product. Unfortunately this is a trend in corporate America. Hide behind an email wall, don't provide phone support and take forever to respond with communications that are lacking or totally wrong. I used to work behind that wall so I have both support and customer experience. ... show more

  • Best portable antenna!(Update)
Just went out to a local park to test this out. It is delightful easy to deploy! Easy to tune! The swr rule can get you close and use an analyzer to make the last bit. Easily got 1.2 swr on 20m and 2.2 swr on 40m. However please note, this is a very compromised antenna, you trade efficiency for portability. It is meant for field operations, it is compromised so you have to give it good environment. Operating at a very open area, parks, beach is recommended. Again do not think this antenna can give you a miracle. -----Update as 4/28/2019----- in the meantime, I went to a beach to test it out, able to rx very well but unable to send out anything. And tested it at home as well, still can not tx well, which is strange. I then find out why. The radials set have to lift off the ground. I quickly get few one-time chopsticks, tied radials on it, stick it on dirt, right away got dx contact down to Guantanamo and Japan from Los Angles on 40m at night! Looks like that is that problem! ... show more

  • Quality ultra-portable mobile + HFpack antenna
The MP-1 was purchased primarily as a mobile antenna, as I was tired of swapping out fiddly hamstick-style antennas every time I wanted to change bands. I went with the titanium Superwhip model, as I also intended to experiment with pedestrian mobile (which I've since gotten very much into). The build quality is great, particularly the loading coil and flexible whip. The telescoping whip is less so. If you plan to put the telescoping whip to serious use, higher quality and longer replacements can be purchased from other vendors to improve performance. One of my favorite things about the MP-1 is it's modular construction and ease with which you can experiment—try a longer mast or wind your own 75m coil (I've got the parts for this sitting in my office). The antenna uses standard 3/8-24 fittings. And everything breaks down into a tiny package I keep in my trunk. On the downside, tuning the coil by hand can be fiddly. The included ruler is a good place to start, but SWR is influenced to varying degrees by the antenna's immediate surroundings and radial placement. This is especially true when operating on foot with a drag wire. I borrowed a friend's MFJ 259 analyzer to get a feel for responant points on bands of interest. You'll at least need a transceiver with an accurate meter. An ATU is very helpful to touch up tuning, and is practically a necessity for working pedestrian mobile. If you own one, I recommend using it. However, if had to spend an additional $150-250 on an auto coupler to make good use of this antenna in an exclusively mobile environment, I'd seriously consider a motorized screwdriver. ... show more
