This is so easy to use. Simply line it up with the chain bar 90° parallel to the bar with the bar in a vise, then I usually give each link 3 swipes on a tune up, and the chain is back to sharp. It takes the guess work out of hand filling and gives the chain a good EVEN edge on both sides, so that my cuts are straight while going through the log. I use this sharpener and a stump vise when getting my 5 cords of fire wood each year and it’s awesome for keeping my chain sharp and cutting straight. I got tired of paying too much $ to sharpen my chains. I decided to sharpen them myself. Purchased an expensive sharpener: Oregon brand that mounts on top of the chain you have to buy individually files for it. It never worked for me. No instructions or manual came with it do it was difficult to do it. After I figured it out the end results were bad. I returned it. However this Stihl item 5605-750 4304. Works so well that I was able to saved the chain the other device ruined. It works as a complete sharpening chain device for both sides and for the top rakes and the cutters. I was able to file them so sharped that it scared me how sharped it gotten. I did too many cuts : about 80 cuts so fast. I will never pay again to take my chains to the shop. For the money they charged me I could have bought this Stihl sharpener! Just make sure you order the RIGHT ONE for your chainsaw. There are too many types of chains for the Stihl brand and if you buy the wrong size it will never work. Take a look at your chain imprint on the bar or the chain packaging and order accordingly. This one works only for the .325 not the 12/64 not the 3/8 or others. You will not regret it. ... show more

This thing works pretty well. The ability to change out the files is a necessary feature, and it's up to the buyer to realize when you go from needing 1-2 passes per tooth to get them sharp to 4-5, as that's about when the file is worn out in my experience. Bought 3 different sizes of these for my 4 saws, super easy to figure out how to use! Just make a black marker on your starting link and then you know when you're all way around on that side of the chain. Love how it automatically files the rakers!
