Description

The Starrett 98-6 precision machinists’ level is 6 inches long and has a graduation (also called sensitivity) of 0.42 mm/m, or 80-90 seconds. The level has two vials to provide accurate results. The main vial is ground and graduated with five lines and adjustable to a positive setting. A second cross-test vial allows measurements from two directions at once. An involute groove runs the entire length of the level base, and provides a reliable seat for round work, such as leveling pipes or shafting. The base is made of machined cast iron for increased durability, and the glass vial is housed in a brass tube with a friction-fit closing to prevent breakage. H is height, the vertical distance from the lowest to highest point; W is width, the horizontal distance from left to right; D is depth, the horizontal distance from front to back. Levels are instruments that are used to determine the true horizontal or vertical plane of a surface. The most common type of level is the spirit level, or bubble level. Spirit levels have a liquid- filled, bowed tube (also called a vial) with a bubble that moves when slight adjustments are made to the level. When the bubble settles between marked points on the vial, it indicates that a surface is horizontally or vertically straight. Levels can have one or more vials to determine the horizontal plane, the vertical plane, or various points between, such as a 45-degree angle, simultaneously. Some levels include a laser line indicator that projects a horizontal or vertical beam on a surface. Bullseye levels, or surface levels, are circular, flat-bottomed spirit levels that determine whether a surface plane is level. Machinists’ levels are made of metal and have surfaces designed specifically for rugged use in a machine shop or tool room. Levels can range from highly-complex and accurate machines, such as those used in the surveying and construction industry, to precision instruments used in carpentry and other building trades, to simple, pocket-sized devices for do- it-yourself projects. The L.S. Starrett Company manufactures precision measuring tools, metrology, and testing equipment, and saw blade products. The company was founded in 1880 and is headquartered in Athol, MA. The Starrett 6-Inch Precision Machinist's Level has ground and graduated main vials and includes a cross test vial. The base of the level features an involute groove running the length of the base that provides a reliable seat for round work. The 6-inch main level vials have gradations that are approximately 80-90 seconds or .005 inches per foot. The level comes backed with a 1-year manufacturer's warranty. The base of the levels feature an involute groove running the length of the base providing a reliable seat for round work. The 6" main level vials have graduations that are approximately 80 - 90 seconds or .005" per foot. To guarantee extreme accuracy, the length of your level should not be longer that the work you are leveling. See more

  • Precise leveling is important in astronomy
The Starrett 98-6 is an exceptional instrument to use for leveling a tripod head. The more accurate the level the less the astronomical instrument needs to be moved during observations. The Starrett 98-6 provides the accuracy. The instrument is well made and fully adjustable to calibrate this level. The cast iron machined base with the vial post provides a stable foot print for the six inch base. The vial is clearly marked to provide accurate reading once calibrated. The vial protective cover is excellent. Every company has some faults in their manufacturing but Starrett still provides the best quality equipment for setting up machines and providing a level base for a large diameter astronomical instruments. This is the perfect mix of quality and money spent. Thank You Starrett. The astrophotography images will be better. ... show more

  • Super accurate and very well built. A real gem!
I use this to level my refractor telescope base. Works great, very accurate and you can calibrate it. Normal big box stores levels are not worth your time and money if you want to be level, this is THE product.

  • very accurate
I calibrated against several others and it was spot on. Great product.

  • American Made Quality
I was a bit torn between this level and one made/sold by Accusize. I've used Accusize products before and have been very happy with their quality and price. The Accusize was a little different style but likely would work just fine for my uses. Ultimately I decided to go with the Starrett solely based on the fact that it is American made and it's quality is undisputed. Out of the box I had to make some adjustments to dial it in perfectly. I'm assuming if I'd have spent the big money for a "certified" model this would not have been necessary. The adjustment took a little time only because this instrument is so accurate. A tiny amount of adjustment results in a large movement of the bubble. This isn't a bad thing but it just makes things take a bit of time to get perfect. I little finer thread may make things easier. Other than the adjusting this is one awesome quality item. If you need precision leveling this is a great tool to have. I only knocked off a star because of the adjusting. The need to adjust isn't an issue but an ultra fine thread on the adjusting nut I believe would make things a little easier. ... show more

  • Very accuracy for machine shop applications.
The Level was pre-calibrated and ready to use once unpacked.

  • Very accurate level
I use this level in my hobby machine shop and also to mount scope on PLR. It's made in the USA, very high quality and reliable level.

  • If you have an engine lathe, you need one of these
I bought this in order to level my lathe and one glance at the photo will show how inadequate other levels are for the job. The Husky looks like things are very slightly off level, while the Starrett shows the true story. Horses for courses. Mine came out of the box fully calibrated. Here's how to check: put the level on your surface plate and gently rotate it until the bubble is centered. Mark the position using something heavy like a 123 block. Now flip the level end-for-end and see if the bubble is centered. If it is, you have a calibrated level. If the level needs calibration, you can do it right there at the surface plate in a few minutes with no need of leveling the plate. There are videos on calibration on YouTube. ... show more

  • Never skips a beat
I’ve used starrett precision levels for a while now and have never once had one not calibrate. These things are dead on every time as long as you take care of, like dropping it would not be taking care of it, that’s bad.
