  • IT'S A TRAP!!! Only 4 Actual Trading Cards
My nephew and I searched on Amazon for "Star Wars Topps Trading Cards" and this came up. (As I type this, my nephew told me to say that we started collecting when he was in Kindergarten, and he is now in 6th grade.) We made the purchase and were surprised to find that it was a book with photos of trading cards, and only 4 actual limited edition trading cards. Now, the book is a pretty cool trip down memory lane, and it's kinda Amazon's fault for putting it in our search results, so we are giving it 4 Stars. Also, my nephew notes that the top corner was a teensy bit damaged. Overall, this is a good book - just not what we were expecting. (It does say "hardcover" in the description, but we didn't notice that, as we thought all our search results were actual Topps Trading Cards. (My nephew say we should conclude with, "Thanks, a lot, Darth Amazon.") ... show more

  • and this first volume in a series covering the Topps Star Wars card sets of the 70s & 80s are a great addition to that series
I'm a big fan of the Topps/Abrams line of nostalgic trading card books that have been coming out over the last few years ( Wacky Packages , Garbage Pail Kids , and the Mars Attacks ), and this first volume in a series covering the Topps Star Wars card sets of the 70s & 80s are a great addition to that series. I love that they're carrying over the fun graphic design elements from book to book (the faux wax wrapper dust covers, the imagery of the gum on the covers, etc.) and that they volumes are becoming increasingly more comprehensive. In the past the books have focused on 1-3 sets of cards per book, but this Star Wars volume collects all five series of the 1977-1979 cards. I also love that they exponentially increased the amount of commentary contained within the book (past books featured introductions and afterwards, but nut much else in the way of "new" content to accompany the card imagery.) The only minor quibbles I have with this volume are that they end up wasting a bit of space by not blowing up the card scans to fill out more of the pages, and they didn't take care to feature keep corresponding cardbacks with their fronts. As for the former, I know a lot of folks suggest that the card scans are presented at full size, but they're actually larger than standard trading cards. So if they were going to go ahead and present them in a larger format they might as well have gone ahead and made them even larger to fill out the book. With the latter, I understand that a large number of the cards feature puzzle-backs that would not make sense to showcase individually next to the card fronts, but they could have at least done this with the cards that had story or fun-fact card backs. It would keep the reader from having to flip around in the book to get the feel of the card set. Just my two cents. All in all, this is a wonderful addition to the Topps/Abrams trading card series and I hope that we'll soon see an announcement for a third volume concentrating on the Return of the Jedi sets after they release volume two this coming April. ... show more

  • The Force Is Strong with This One!
This is a great book from front to back, and you can see that a lot of care was taken when constructing it. The dust jacket of the book actually looks like one of the old wax packs (i.e. wrappers), and that theme continues throughout the book. (Spoiler alert: If you take the dust jacket off the book, the cover of the book prominently pictures a stick of bright pink bubble gum! I’m sure it’s just as hard as the original gum was, too.) The cards are actually printed a little over 3” x 4” each, which is larger than they were originally issued and allows you to see them with quite a bit of detail. Unfortunately some of the cards and stickers are a little dark for my liking, which probably relates to the source materials they had available to scan. Many of the cards also include facts and trivia related to Star Wars, the actors and the filming process. This is again a very nice touch and I think it adds some nice value to the book. At first I thought it was an odd design choice to not include the card fronts and backs on subsequent pages, but then I remembered that many of the cards had portions of pictures on the back, so those backs are pretty useless on their own. Thankfully they include complete pictures of the puzzles, so you can see what the card backs look like when they are combined. Construction-wise, this is a solid book and the pages are thick and bright. I love the design and artwork of the dust jacket, but it seems like it would tear easily, so I’d be careful if you take the book with you on your travels. I have pre-ordered the companion book for The Empire Strikes Back and I’ll be doing the same for Return of the Jedi when it becomes available. Don’t be a nerf herder; grab this book! ... show more

  • Totally awesome and worth buying (as a dad who grew up with Star Wars)
I was a little late to the Star Wars trading cards, I didn’t catch on to them until Empire Strikes Back came out, and by then the original movie's cards were out of the stores. What little cards I have from the original movie, I got from trading with the one kid in the neighborhood who had plenty of doubles. I never got close to getting the whole series. So it's neat to be able to finally complete the collection. But even better, now I have a 4 year old who loves all things Star Wars. I brought out the original cards to show to him a couple of times and he loved ‘em. But who knows, those cards could be worth something someday (probably already are) and pay for his college tuition (or for a walker for me!), so rather than risk them getting wrecked by the little one, $14 to get them all in one book is a small price to pay for the “insurance” (and the convenience), and getting to relive the excitement and enjoy them with your kid. Anyhow, I am probably going to get the "Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi" books too eventually. It looks like they have these for all the movies! ... show more
