I got this feeder for my dad and visited him the other day to see how he liked it and how it was doing. He loved it. I took it down and put bird seed in and it appears well-built and easy to pour in the seed. I witnessed a squirrel jump on it and soon jump off so, yes, it's squirrel proof. The only thing to be aware of is my dad said the perches on the feeder are smaller so only the small finch-types can feed on it. He said he still loves it though and he's happy with it ... show more

Definitely squirrel-proof! I place the bird feeder about eight feet from the closest tree, used an "umbrella" style baffle over and under the feeder, and squirrels stay away (although they will eat the seed that falls on the ground). Overall, a very sturdy and well-made bird feeder for SMALL birds -- not cardinals or robins -- despite what the product description says. I specifically bought the feeder for my cardinals, but they don't like the tiny perches and it looks like they can't get their beaks far enough into the recessed feeder bins to get any of the sunflower seeds (SIGH). So, if you want to feed small birds like wrens and finches, this is a great choice, not so much for cardinals. I'd return it, but it's not Amazon's fault the product description is inaccurate. ... show more

When it is 10 degrees and snowing, the hardest part of filling my past feeders was taking them down, unscrewing the top, and setting them on the ground before refilling, screwing the top back on with frozen fingers and then rehanging. None of that with this feeder. It stays hung on the pole. With one hand I slide the cage down and the cap up and then with the other hand I pour the seed in. Slide the cap back down and done. Takes a minute or less. I was a bit doubtful of the plastic cord since a lot of plastic becomes brittle in sub freezing weather. But this has held up beautifully. The squirrels and large birds like starlings and grackles are heavy enough to slide the cage down and the very clever squirrels have not found a way in. After a few days they gave up and now are satisfied with seen on the ground. Virtually every squirrel proof cage I've used over the years was defeated by squirrels. I will likely be buying another one in the fall. ... show more

It’s not quite as sturdy as the other feeders I have but it’s also not quite as expensive and so far it’s been holding up great and no squirrels have been able to get to into it which amazed me. I bought other so called squirrel proof feeders that failed miserably so I wasn’t sure if this one would hold up but it is working really well. I put a metal hub cap above it to help discourage squirrels and keep weather off which may help some. It holds a decent amount of seed and is easy to refill. ... show more

    • Seed spills out of feeder holes!!!

I got this feeder due to issues I had with squirrels chewing out the plastic perches from my other "squirrel proof" feeder. The feeder is all metal which prevents this issue. When the squirrels hang on the feeder, the weight of the squirrels causes the metal enclosure to go down and cover the seed holes. However, this morning when I went out to check the feeder, I noticed a lot of bird seed on the ground. I went to adjust one of the perches the squirrel had moved up and the seed just started spilling out of the seed hole. Almost half of the 4 lbs of seed spilled out before I was able to stop it.     • A bit too protective for larger birds.

Easy to set-up and fill, stout construction. My only issue is that some birds, Jays and Robins for example, are weighty enough to slip the squirrel protective sleeve into position. That leaves birds frustrated by no way to access the seed. Definitely thwarts the most acrobatic squirrels tho.

I replaced a feeder that was very popular with the birds [and squirrels!] with this one and at first the birds couldn't figure it out. I almost returned it but over about a week they got the hang of it and now I'm considering buying a second one, It definitely keeps the squirrels away. Unfortunately it also is too small for the larger jays and towhees so I may shop around a little. Definitely works for squirrel exclusion. ... show more
