    • This is big but not too big
I have a large area in our back yard that's had pine trees felled, and there is a lot of biomass on the ground that's nicely being worked over and eaten by fungi. In my forest garden-building efforts, which I have been at for four years now, the plan is to scatter all kinds of seeds here and there and see which come up and which don't. I have both purchased and collected annual and perennial wildflower seeds, brassicas and mustards, and other reseeding greens that I can mix together and scatter about. This is the permaculture way. This spreader is about the size of a 2-liter pitcher, big but not too big, and will be very useful not only to scatter seeds but also to toss in seeds as I collect them in preparation for fall/early winter sowing. The grooves in the lip of the spreader help scatter the seed evenly. I can also use it to scatter oyster shell chips and diatomaceous earth in my chicken run and about the garden. The only thing I don't like about this spreader is that it's a bit difficult to figure out how to get the lid to screw on right. There's a trick, I know, but I haven't quite figured it out yet. But it will be handy in the garden, and I can hang it on a hook in my shed by the handle at times of the year when I'm not using it. ... show more

    • To Improve Sturdiness, the Handle Should Be Attached To the Body, Not the Lid
This is just the right size to keep in the coat closet by the front door for times when the porch and its steps are threatened with ice. Once filled with Ice Melt it is a bit heavy and, being plastic, it feels flimsy when holding it only by the handle. The first time I used it the lid popped off. I thought I had it on correctly and tightly. So I scooped the Ice Melt up from the entryway floor and put the lid back on. The only way I could get it to stay without feeling like it was going to pull free again was to keep turning it until it was beyond where it should be which I suspect will shorten its life. My redesign suggestion would be to attach the handle to the body of the container, not the lid. ... show more

It is not easy to open and close with the handle.

    • Small jobs only
This spreader doesn’t hold a lot so it’s for small jobs only. Also, I only use the largest opening because the smaller ones always get clogged up. But aside from those limitations, the product is filling a need for me. At $16 the price is right.
