  • Best Airpods Max replacement I have tried
Color: Black
Apple recently made it quite clear to me they do not care about their Airpods Max customers, and that I needed to look in earnest for a replacement. The Sonos Ace are the closest I have found, better in many ways, worse in others. I currently intend to keep these and sell my (third pair of) Airpods Max before they inevitably break. Good stuff: They're more comfortable, lighter, and better at cancelling high pitched noises. They clamp acceptably. Not quite as good at isolating low pitched noises, but I find high pitched stuff far more annoying, so it is a fair trade off. The ear cups are replaceable. They fit around my ears and are genuinely circumaural. They are smooth feeling, which I like compared to the abrasive feel of the Airpods Max fabric cups. The Ace has an app but does not force you to use it to use the headphones. They also don't have the obnoxious touch controls that so many modern manufacturers use and misuse. They did not put in a bunch of metal for no reason, so they are far lighter on the head. The lack of cold metal on the outside suggests they won't suffer from the condensation problems which will slowly destroy the Airpods Max. I am no audiophile, so I'll just say they sound fine to me. Bad stuff: The physical controls are not as good as the Airpods Max. The volume control in particular is much worse. Connecting to Mac is less convenient. I do not particularly like Sonos as a company. ... show more

  • Better than the AirPods Max
Color: White
I've owned and used the AirPods Max (APM) since its release. In my opinion, the Ace is a far better alternative. Pros: - Great sound quality, easily comparable to the APM. - In-app EQ for those interested. - Way louder than the APM gets. - The noise cancellation is on par with the APM in my opinion. I was lucky or unlucky that major construction was happening right in front of my house so I had an opportunity to compare the strength of the noise cancellation of both headphones. - Way lighter than the APM, the difference in weight is immediately noticeable. - USB-C. I mean come on. - Actual tactile physical buttons, I'm sick and tired of touch sensitive gestures and motions. They work really well. I find the buttons more to my liking than the APM's crown. - You can connect the ace to multiple devices. You can also pair it to a Sonos soundbar which is a nice touch. - An honest to God On/Off button. - The Ace's case is premium, functional, and compact. I can see myself taking this with me when traveling. Cons: - Some software glitch with iOS18 (Beta) when you change the volume it's not immediately reflected in Apple's music app. I'm sure this is easily solvable with an update when iOS 18 is officially rolled out. - Sonos ruined its relations with its customers by releasing an absolutely terrible app that was clearly and obviously not ready for an official release. The app is clunky, less functional than before, and not intuitive to use. If you rely heavily on the app you may want to hold off and assess whether this purchase makes sense to you. Conclusion: I really love the Ace. It's gorgeous, it sounds phenomenal. It's lightweight. Yes you're not gonna some of the niceties you may get with the APM's deep integration with the Apple ecosystem but the Ace performs well. The 399 dollar price is a good deal indeed. ... show more

  • Much more comfortable than AirPods Max
Color: White
For most of my life I’ve used earbuds (AirPods Pro for the last few years) despite being an owner of the AirPods Max since launch. The AirPods Max sound amazing, and their transparency mode is second to none, but they are incredibly heavy and have the clamping force of a gorilla squeezing your head. A feature I loved about them though was the seamless ability to have audio from my Apple TV go to my headset at night to not disturb my girlfriend when she went to bed. Unfortunately the horrible ergonomics were not worth it so I have barely used them in the last year or two. When Sonos announced the Ace, I was thrilled. I already have a Sonos sound system (previously a Beam Gen 1, 2 Ones, and a Sub Min, recently upgraded to an Arc Ultra, 2 Era 300s, and the Sub Mini — a great upgrade but a separate topic). The Ace have the same ability to divert audio, instead diverting from my soundbar instead of directly from the Apple TV. They sound great, the battery life is noticeably better than the AirPods Max, and best of all they are actually comfortable. I just got back from a trip over the holidays with two six hour flights and wore the Sonos Ace the whole time comfortably. The only complaint I have is that the transparency mode is slightly worse than the AirPods Max, just enough that I’m aware I’m wearing headphones whereas the AirPods sound like they’re not even there, but for the improvements in all the other areas it was well worth the buy. I know some folks have beaf with Sonos over the May app update but I’ve personally had zero issues with my setup (to the point that I confidently spent thousands on the new surround sound setup for Atmos…) and still recommend them to all my friends and family (sent my old equipment to a good home with my friends to setup in their apartment, they love it too) ... show more
