------------------ UPDATE ------------------ 2021-07-28: Installed it in early spring, and so far it's been working (mostly) in DIY mode. The only trouble I've had with it is that it will occasionally drop the wifi connection. The good news is that it will recover on its own after 5 to10 minutes. And this is with the external antenna outside of the junction box. I still have to see if it continues to work during the next winter. I'll update this review then. -------------- Original Review -------------- First, this device can do what it's advertised to do.... Sort of. There's been a lot of posts (outside of amazon) that are of the opinion that the ewelink software isn't safe, or contains viruses. I definitely don't want to take that chance so I decided to set up the Mini in DIY mode and not use the ewelink software. I'm a developer, so I wanted to exclusively use the Mini's DIY mode. It is possible to set up the WiFi in DIY mode and it can be done via a browser. But there's a catch. You have to be quick because the Mini will only be in AP mode a short while. And you'll have to enter your desired SSID and password before the Mini times out and exits AP mode. Once that's done power off the mini, and power it back on. It should connect to your WiFi. Just remember that DIY mode is not directly compatible with Alexa, MQTT, and others. But if you choose DIY mode then sending commands to the Mini may(or may not) be an issue for you. I use a tool called "postman" to test out the DIY API and it works very well. Once your Mini is connected to your WiFi you will find it using "ESP_12AB34", where "12AB34" will be the last 6 digits in the Mini's MAC address. This will help you identify it in case you want to reserve an IP address for it. Overall it works as expected, but setting it up was a bit frustrating due to the AP mode time out. I've also noticed that just sitting idle the Mini does get a little warm. At this point I don't think that will be an issue. The true test will be after I install it in an outdoor electrical box to control a PIR floodlight. I'm in Chicago and winter temperatures can get brutal. Hopefully the Mini will be able to handle the temperatures and humidity of the Midwest. UPDATE: IMPORTANT INFO!!! And the reason for 1 star.... You CAN NOT access the DIY API from within a served page in a browser. For example, you're using a local web server(like XAMPP) and you want that page to send an API command TO the Mini. It will not work, at all! it's because the Mini does not send the correct headers to allow for that. It's missing CORS from the headers and there is no fix for that. The ONLY solution is to create YET ANOTHER API to run as a Node application and have it forward the call to the Mini API. ... show more

I've purchased a couple of normal smart light switches from a variety of companies. They work well. The problem is that they all have a modern push-button activation. That's okay, but I prefer an old-fashioned switch with a nice audible "clack" sound that physically moves in your hand. It feels more substantial and in-keeping with a traditional home. A modern push-button (and most are illuminated) might be nice for a "modern style" home, but it kinda clashes with my home. It's too "sterile" looking. You can stuff this Sonoff Mini behind your existing switch and convert it to a smart switch. That's perfect. no one even knows something changed. The old Levitron brand switch still makes a heavy-duty clack sound when you flip it, but you can now turn the bathroom light off from the bedroom. Even more useful, the Sonoff app lets me set the switch so it will stay on for 30 minutes, and then automatically turn off. I used this so the bathroom fan runs for 30 minutes to dry off the tiles and prevent mold. I've had it for a months now and it's working perfectly. Criticisms: 1. Even though it's small, it's still a little big to fit behind the existing switch and still be able to stuff the stiff solid wires that are used in 110v construction. You can do it, but it's really time-consuming and frustrating to get everything to sit flat. 2. It does require you to run the existing switch "through" the Sonoff. The existing switch becomes merely an low-voltage external control to a transistor and relay, instead of directly controlling the 110v house current. That's fine for now, but when an electrician comes they're going to be pretty surprised (and confused) at what they find. If the Sonoff fails, the switch stops working. i doubt the Sonoff is going to last as long as a physical Levitron light switch. 3. Sonoff uses its own app and servers instead of Smartlife, which is becoming a defacto standard. If Sonoff discontinues this product, goes out of business, or has server/Internet problems then the device will no longer work as a smart-switch. it also means it's a separate app from all your other devices. The counter-argument is that you *can* replace the firmware with one that is not dependent on Sonoff or the Internet. But that's not easy at all. Overall, I like the device and I'm buying a second one. It's got a unique capability (converting an existing switch), is a name-brand with a big community of users, and it's very will-priced. ... show more

Changed almost all my light fixtures using this neat little device with Alexa. Extra bonus is the Ewlink app which you also can use, and it has more advanced functions than Alexa, but still works as normal with Alexa voice control with those functions enabled. Even when Alexa/Internet connection is down, you can control the devices locally with Ewlink app using LAN control, I discovered during an outage Best Alexa compatible device I own! Not recommended for someone without basic electric knowledge and skills though. ... show more

Ok, I love these little things. I love automation and smart home control. My wife, she likes switches. I no longer have to choose, and I don't need to spend 20 to 30 bucks for a dedicated smart light switch. I can just keep what's existing and smarten it up. I installed a pair of these in a three gang box today to control the light and ceiling fan without getting out of bed. Once I deciphered what was going on it the box (holy hell what a mess) it was a simple matter of rewiring and installation in the box, setting up the app and minis, adding the Alexa skill, testing and then jamming the rats nest back in the wall box. Now it looks exactly the same but I can include them in Alexa routines, voice control them, control them with the app, or like my wife, use the switch. I'm so buying a ton more for this house. Only issue was I needed to use an older non 5ghz phone to set them up since they only work on 2.4ghz. Samsung note 4 to the rescue. ... show more
