  • Best $10 soldering iron
Model: 80w- blue
I was blown away when I got this. Not only was the soldering iron spectacular, having precise temperature control and easily module tips, it also came with a lot of accessories. They give you more than just a soldering iron! I'm probably blown away because my old soldering iron was from the 60s and took five minutes to heat up — I had to make it hotter with a flamethrower — and because my soldering tip was so brittle I had to replace it with a screw driver tip. But even using some of expensive soldering irons on my high school robotics team there's not really that much of a difference. Besides maybe improved portability but this soldering iron is at least just as good, and the accessories it comes with more than makes up, you're buying a whole kit with this for only $10. ... show more

  • Excellent Soldering Iron for adding 3D printing Inserts
Model: 80w- blue
I owned a Weller Soldering station and I thought I could simply use it to add the Ruthex Threaded Inserts but that was not the case. The provided adapter on the Ruthex Threaded Inserts is not compatible with the Weller tip type. Rookie mistake. So I decided to purchase this Soldering Iron instead and it was really a great purchase. I will 3D print a complete assembly to use it as a permanent tool for adding the Threaded Inserts. I did use it for soldering as part of my testing and it performed great. The temperature is easy to adjust and it heats up quickly. The extras that it comes with are a nice touch. Strongly recommend for 3D printing people looking to have a cheap and good tool to add Ruthex Threaded Inserts or any other brand. ... show more

  • Pretty Good Budget Soldering Iron
Model: 80w- blue
I don't solder a lot, and so I don't need a high end soldering station, but my old soldering iron has been through the wringer a few dozen times, and I wanted something with temperature control to use for installing threaded inserts into 3D printed models. This inexpensive kit fits my needs just about perfectly. The temperature control works very well and the kit includes several different tips for various uses as well as a fair amount of thin solder and a stand with a tiny little sponge on it. I also like that it has an on-off switch so I don't have to unplug it until I'm ready to put it away. It heats pretty quickly, so I can turn it off while I prepare the next joint to be soldered. The only thing I don't like is the stand. Like most in this price range, it just isn't very useful - it's tiny and too lightweight, so the iron can easily pull it off the workbench if you're not careful. I didn't buy it for the stand, and it's not any worse than the one that came with my old soldering iron, so I'm not too worried about that, but I don't understand why manufacturers even bother with them. The kit includes a selection of six tips that should work for whatever soldering jobs you might run into. I saw one person on YouTube using the flat tip to "weld" joints in 3D printed models, and the pointed tips work pretty well for either soldering small items (like on circuit boards) or for installing threaded inserts, although I'd recommend buying proper threaded insert tips for that. Overall, a very nice kit for the price. ... show more

  • The bigger the job, the bigger the blob
Model: 80w- blue
Very nice, you can not only adjust its temperature but it has an offset calibration setting for very accurate temperature control. It can display in C or F and it remembers all its settings even after unplugging from the outlet. The tips are very easy to change. It even came with a small block of rosin flux. The rest stand seems to be made from Bakealite, so the tip won't melt it, but don't drop it on a hard surface as it may break. The sponge compartment is a nice touch for out of the box use, but it is a bit small so I use my larger sponge. The instruction book was informative but you have to interpret the translation a bit, but it is helpful. It came with a standard tip plus 5 more various tips. It also came with a good amount of solder. The iron is lightweight, comfortable, and very easy to handle. The LCD display is very easy to read. It goes from off to 760 F in under 2 minutes. Update: While handling the soldering iron, my hand would sometimes rest up against the buttons, depress them, and change the temperature on me (usually the white minus button which lowers the temperature). What I did: I used a shop razor blade (the kind used for razor scrapers) and carefully trimmed each button flush. Now my hand won't press the buttons - I just use blunt ended tooth picks to press in the buttons. Works fine, lasts long time. ... show more

Item is as described and works really well. The tip gets very hot, and I really like the temperature window. Great product with many accessories.

  • Great for wood burning, not good for impatience
Model: 80w- blue
I broke the iron after two months of having it. The only reason was that I put it at a high temperature because I thought it'd make welding 3D prints faster. I recommend keeping the temperature under 425 degrees Fahrenheit. Has a lot of tips so if you want to get into wood burning, you could with this. ... show more

  • Great for the price. Struggles on larger work
Model: 80w- blue
I am pleasantly surprised by this iron. I packed away my soldering station and used this exclusively for a couple of weeks. I works fine for light work, like PC boards and tinning wires. It starts to struggle when the pieces get larger or there are large wires to heat. It really had problems where there was a large mass of metal that needed to be soldered/unsoldered. My soldering station would have no problem. The cord does not seem to be heat resistant, so I expect to see some burns on the cord in the next few months. The temp readout seems pretty accurate, but it is not reflective of the actual heat at start-up. While the readout reached operating temp in a few seconds, the til lagged by a minute. Not bad, but not really quick. The holder and sponge are worthless and I tossed mine. All in all, it is a real value as a basic soldering iron for light tasks. It has a place on my workbench for quick and basic soldering, but it will, by no means, replace my soldering station. ... show more
