Bought this elsewhere for the same price and I love it. Keep in mind it is a very thin and lightweight beanie. VERY THIN. So if that's not what you're looking for, you won't like it. But if you want a minimalistic light weight item that will pack very compactly for emergency use, it's great. It's not going to provide huge arctic-level (hey, just making up terms here) protection in high winds or severe cold, but it is just enough to be what you need in a lot of situations. I carry it just to have a backup item that takes up almost no space, using it only when needed for warmth. How do I describe the space this would fit into? For mine, I stuff it into an average/small sized prescription bottle (see photo). It would probably fit into an old style film canister (anyone remember those?) or easily into a regular sized altoids box. ... show more

I bought a couple of these several years ago, they were amazing beanies. I lost one, so decided to get a couple more. Unfortunately it seems Smartwool has sold out like so many companies, and relies on the reputation of their name rather than making quality products. This beanie is very thin, feels like polyester rather than wool, and after one wash has lost its elasticity and is so loose that it wont stay on a 7-3/4" hat size head. love this thing. I walk for fitness and to keep my degenerative disc disease from making me a cripple. that means cold weather too, so I needed a hat that I could wear to keep my melon from freezing, but not have me dripping sweat. that means a regular knit cap is right out. this one is just right, highly breathable, keeps me from freezing, but doesn't retain excess heat or moisture. saw it on a hiking review site, and decided 'why not' - best purchase I've made this year. it also doesn't look entirely ridiculous in work clothing but keeps my ears from burning when I've got to walk across the frozen tundra of Pentagon parking at 25 F & 20 kts wind. ... show more

I think I'm on my fourth or fifth one, now (including one SmartWool Merino Balaklava). For whatever reason I cannot ever keep track of where they go, but I like the SmartWool Merino beanies so much that I'm reluctant to try any others. They breathe super well, and are very versatile. I've worn it under my helmet biking in the snow, cross country skiing, as a running beanie, and then just for casual wear (and under headphones). It provides a surprising amount of warmth, and works well across a wide range of temps (fall, winter, and spring in NC). I'll probably lose the one I currently have before the year is out, and I will undoubtedly pony up and just buy another one to replace it when I do. ... show more

I expected much more for the money from this brand. I love many of their other products but am very disappointed with this beanie. For one it is way too small and wont stay put. It may work for some as a very light weight, I mean extremely light weight (so much so that you can easily see through the fabric). It just doesn't work as I expected it to from the description. May I suggest making a mens and womens or at least a few unisex sizes. I needed a beanie I could wear with layers to stay warm while working in the snow all day. One that would fit a larger than average noggin would have been great. This is not it. It may fit my preteen grandson or my wife for use in fall or spring but not me for winter... ... show more

I wear it around the house in winter time & the amount of warmth it provides is perfect, also wear it under another thicker wool beany or other hat when needed for an added layer of insulation. Deducted two stars because this color (grey) shows sweat & other stains easily & I haven't been able yet to remove them completely, and because the hat is so thin & small they're too easy to lose track of, & for that price they're not something I want to lose, I would rather have a wool blend to make it bulkier (maybe I should have gotten neon green or something : ) ... show more

This is pretty much perfect for when you are hiking but don't need to wear something on your head but when you stop and are standing around or sitting your head will get cold. It's thin and light and easy to stuff in a pocket when you need it.

Liked this one so much I found a store locally that sold the same hat for same price..Smartwool rarely prices stuff on sale. Hat is worth the price and love the packable properties. This is their lightweight beanie but warm, next model up is double layered and reversible. Highly recommend.
