  • PERFECT FOR NON-EXPERTS
I'm a subscriber to Fine Woodworking, and benefit greatly from all their articles. I ordered this book "slightly used," but when it arrived, it was as pristine as a new book. I didn't realize until I got to the last pages that this book is a collection of many articles in past issues of FW. But I didn't send it back, because who wants to spend months re-reading past articles and grouping them as the publisher has done here? There's much good info on dust management, layout, recommended hand and power tools, heating and cooling a shop, etc. Yes, I would recommend this book, but look for one that's "used, in good condition." ... show more

  • From small to huge
This book presents a number of different shops, from the small 1 car garage all the way up to a dream shop. The different layouts do provide a lot of good ideas that I personally found interesting and intriguing. Having a small shop myself, a 12 x 18, I found some of the ideas inspiring. I will be using some various tips from each of the shops presented in my own layout. This is a good book in so much as it provides you an objective view on things you may not have considered in designing your own workshop. I give this book 4 stars, not because the content is lacking, but more because, while the information is very good, it does not concentrate more on the "smaller" and " typical" type shops that an amateur or hobbyist would have. With that said, I am able to take bits and pieces from all the shops presented and formulate a more well rounded layout for my own personal shop. ... show more

  • Great tips - even for the weekend DYI'r
At first when I started reading the book I thought I was in store for a long treatise on how to build a professional workshop. If you are in the market for that information, I am sure this book will get you started. Where I found the book most useful was in seeing how each person used the space available. In one instance, the shop design was a professional spread with a specific location for each step of the woodworking process. In another instance, the shop design was for a professional who had limited space. Both extremes helped me visualize how my home workshop (my garage) might be better used. I gained a lot from reading the book. Reading it is not a necessity, however. You may gain the same information the authors did by making the same mistakes as they did or you can learn vicariously from them and the examples. Now, one thing I recommend for most hobbyists; while reading the book, do not get discouraged or dismissive. Read the book for ideas about how to make your workspace more usable and more efficient. If you do, you will not be disappointed. ... show more

  • Woodworking aspirants
This is a 'second-stage' book suitable for those with potential for plenty of space, time and machinery. It has minimal coverage of basic workbench and hand tools practice, and simple handyman projects, although storage and space-saving ideas are well covered. The book is ideal for those aspiring to make the big jump to a larger, machinery equipped, productive work place, with better and safer work practices (and will certainly guide my future and hopeful aspirations). ... show more

  • Chock Full of Good Ideas
I have a small woodshop which has begun overflowing. This book suggested great solutions to storage and tool layouts that conserve floor space. Unbelievable number of illustrations inspire solutions to problems in your own shop. Suggests practical things like ways to separate finishing from tool areas and practical ways to handle dust collection (vital to avoiding lung damage). Also includes suggestions on which tools to get first based on what you are going to build. Makes you want to construct a special building. ... show more

Great book! I read it cover to cover, twice. I'm setting up a garage shop and this saved me from some mistakes and also help validate ideas I already had. Very easy to read and follow. Good photos and illustrations.

There is some good info in the book but really only half the book pertains to small woodworking shops. This is a general book for tips of setting up shop for all sizes - don't buy if your specifically looking for info on small shops.
