There aren't many toys as child safe as this one. All of the parts are, with the exception of the car, completely safe for small children. The box says it is for children 18 months and older, but if you remove the car from the set until a child reaches 18 months, a younger child could really enjoy the Hammering Marble Run! Little tykes love to pound on things, so the enclosed wooden hammer is a winner! MEASUREMENTS: When set up for the marble run, it is 12 high" x 11-1/4" wide and 3-3/4" deep. The race track is 23-1/2" long. It is boldly painted and colorful. The race car (3-3/4" long) is wood -- even the wheels! The car body is painted silver. The hammer is solid wood, as are the blue and green painted 2" balls. SAFETY: There is no safety warning regarding small parts on the box! Of course, you should inspect the marble run/race track regularly for loose screws. The screws are recessed and hard for a child to get at, so it would take a lot to dislodge them, but . . . "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." With small kids, it doesn't hurt to be extra careful. BATTERIES: You don't need any! Isn't that great!!! Bonus: the toy comes completely assembled!     • Bashing wooden marbles with a hammer
The small foot 2-in-1 wooden hammering marble run is a moderately fun toy for tots with limited educational value. The Marble Run comes as one fully assembled piece. It's constructed from wooden platforms and supports with plastic slides and hinges. There are no real instructions provided, so it took me a second to figure out how to unfold the thing. Basically, you just need to put on the top corner with a little force to unfold it so you can have the one continuous slide for the car. To use the upright tower, you just fold it back and it kind of locks in place with a subtle change in resistance. When it's unfolded there is a small wooden car that your kid can place onto this green plastic platform at the top, and your kid can tip the green platform to get the car to roll down the slide. It's not a long ramp as the car rolls down in 1 second. If the car lands on a hard floor there is a 50% chance it will flip over and a 50% chance it will roll for awhile. In the upright position there are two plastic rings at the top of the tower where your kid can place green and blue wooden balls (marbles). The plastic rings provide some resistance and hold the ball in place. Your kid really needs to push down to get the marbles to fall through the holes. But it's designed so that your kid can bash the marbles with the wooden hammer to get them to fall through where they will go down a two part slide. There is a circular cut-out at the top to store the hammer, and there is an elastic band on the side to insert and store the car. An 18-24 month old can't really get the car into the elastic band, so a parent will have to do that. Surprisingly, the marble hammer part of the toy has been more fun that I would have anticipated for 18-24 month olds. Conversely, the car slide part seems to get boring rather quickly for the kids. Small Foot claims that it's hours of educational fun, but I'm not sure where the educational part is other than giving the kids a cursory experience in understanding gravity? Still, tots do seem to like the hammering marble part, so the toy has some distractive merit. All that said, there are some minor safety concerns. As long as a parent is around and mostly watching their kid, it's pretty safe. But this isn't a toy where a parent can zone out and not have full attention directed toward an 14-24 month old. The kid can easily hit his or her own hand with the hammer, and if there are a couple kids in the same room the kids may obviously experiment with hammering their little friend. There are exposed screw heads throughout the toy, but they are all countersunk into the wood. Long term, though, a parent will have to just inspect it once in a while to make sure the screws don't get loose. Besides the obvious hammer concerns, it is pretty easy for a kid to pinch themselves as they try to fold and unfold the toy. With some parental assistance it's totally fine, but if a parent zones out for a minute a kid can give themselves a minor ouchie. Overall, the small foot 2-in-1 hammering marble run is more fun than I thought it would be for 18-24 month olds, and I think the toy is appropriate for about 14 months to 36 month olds.     • Very hard for adults to figure out how to use properly. Elicits baby laughs from improper users!
Adults tried to find directions and set up instructions. Seemed boring. Balls fell through too easily and car speeds right off on to the floor. Lots of fun for babies & toddlers to flip the car on the floor or smash the balls through the holes upon which precariously balanced. It won't hold anyone's interest past age 3 or so. Safe big clunky sturdy pieces,. Two options for use as a secret route interiorly or a long speed ramp when unfolded. Simple perfection for the little ones' glee. ... show more

My 21 month old liked it for a few minutes then was not interested. It's an OK toy more so for younger toddlers I think. We have some wooden cars so we decided to use those instead of the small car it comes with. It's pretty sturdy though

    • Great cause and effect toy
This is a great cause and effect game for toddlers. i absolutely adore that it is 2 games in 1. It is a pounding game with large balls that fit in holes and are knocked through to roller coaster down, with the included hammer. If you open the toy up the large included car races down the track. The car is nice and double sided so works no matter which way your toddler puts it down, reducing frustration. It is a sturdy toy but worth noting that only the frame, balls, hammer, and car are wood. The tracks are plastic and the lining of the holes for the ball are rubbery. The holder for the hammer/car is rope which is a bit of a challenge for toddlers to work so they’re never going to put the hammer away, but let’s face it, they weren’t going to anyway. The only piece I don’t find to be sturdy is the launch ramp for the car which is a thinner plastic. That said, my 2 year old never uses the ramp, my 5 year old does but he’s not as rough anyway so we haven’t had a casualty yet. As long as you don’t object to plastic this is a really fun toy that holds their attention for a very long time and is easy to store. It is a must have classic. ... show more

My main hangup on this toy when ordering was I was worried about marbles being choking hazards. The balls in this toy are actually just small balls, not standard marble sized marbles. The entire toy folds in half on a hinge for easier storage or open for longer ramp. It’s made up of some bright colors, black and white, plastic and it’s very gender neutral. Box says 18+ for age recommendation and I’d agree with that. This toy was a big hit with a 29 month old. 4 year old played with it when it was new but doesn’t go back to it regularly. Overall pleased with this toy. Seems very durable, like it will last through multiple kids and multiple years. My only concern is that the balls will get lost but seems like we could find more of something similar size in advance of that issue even arising. Would recommend to others and say this is a good gift item. ... show more
