    • Three Rugged Writing Instruments for the Size of One

This instrument provides three, hard core writing tools in one. I first found these in a Army and Air Force Exchange Clothing Sales Store intended for USAF Aircrews. I have since found them on Amazon, and I keep several around all the time. The pen write in black, Red (some versions in Blue), and it has a mechanical pencil. I trade out the #2 HB in the stock mechanical pencil with #1 2B Lead as it prints darker. The whole package is roughly the size of a standard, quality pen. It is thicker than the average Cross Pen and thinner than a large barrel Mont Blanc. it fits neatly in most any pen/pencil pocket (like on a notebook, ACU sleeve, or Flight Suit). The barrel is a tough, brass case with a tactical, matte/flat black finish. The finish will wear in spots over time, but I find it give it a rugged patina that give them a bit of character. ... show more

It's refreshing to find an American-made product that is perfect for its intended use. Designed for EDC carry in the shoulder pocket of aviators in order to be readily available to fill out forms or jot quick notes, this small pen offers red and black ink in addition to a 0.5 mm mechanical pencil with eraser. It measures (about) 5 1/4 inch (13 cm) long with a barrel of 3/8" (8 mm) and is built like a tank. Surprisingly heavy for it's size, the sturdy metal black anodized barrel is designed not to be non-reflective and has a sturdy pocket clip. The cap that secures the eraser on top of the pen has machined threads that secure it to the barrel. A simple twist of the barrel causes the pen or pencil tips to securely slide into place and can be done with one hand while on the phone. Refills are changed simply by pulling the center of the barrel apart. This pen is not for everyone. There is no bling factor with chrome-like fittings or sleek shiny plastic. Ink capacity is constrained by the small size of the pen and the eraser is tiny. It is not designed for prolonged writing sessions where hand fatigue may be an issue. The pen could be easily lost due to its small size and unobtrusive color. Others may covet your possession and fail to return it. However, if you want an instrument to take a quick note with and like the functionality of red/black ink plus 0.5 mm mechanical pencil with eraser, this is a fine choice. I value utility and industrial design. This instrument has become part of my every day carry and resides in the bottom of my jeans pocket where it is ready for instantaneous use. ... show more

I work on aircraft so this pen is a must have. Pros: It's easier than having a seperate black pen, a red pen, and a pencil. Foreign object damage is reduced by having one item to keep track of. Great easy to give gift. Price is lower than the competitors for the same thing. Easy to do write on all forms comfortably. Does well in 120 degrees F weather, doesnt leak and works well. Cons: Cold weather below 0 degrees F, I would suggest keeping it inside a pocket close to your skin, gels up but it will still perform. I will say they only last for 2 washes through the washing machine. That's the only big draw back I have found during all the years. The mechanical mechanism fouIs out and cannot be saved, ( my fault always not the pens). I have bought SKILCRAFT B3 3 way pens for years. Simple packaging for a outstanding product. Here recently I have been gifting them to my son and coworkers. I do highly recommend Skilcraft b3 for aviation and other jobs and schools where pens and pencils are needed. I am a civilian user. I bought this pen because my job requires a lot of travel both on the ground and in the air. This pen makes up for three writing utensils...black pen, red pen and pencil. With the exception of the red pen, I use the others quite frequently. I have used the product a few times and I'm satisfied with it. The only issue I have with it, is the black pen always seems to have a little ink running / gathering at the tip / nib. This is usually solved by wiping it away however it is a bit of an inconvenience. For this I would give it 4 1/2 stars. It may just be the particular refill it was sent with. I will know in the future when I change it out. To date, this is not happening with the red refill. Otherwise, it is a finely crafted instrument that works well. I fly for the Air Force, and needed a pen/pencil combo for my flight suit pocket. This is exactly what I've been looking for. It is pricey, so check around, but I think it's well worth the cost. They do sell these to GSA account holders for a little cheaper FYI. The pen writes well, both black and red ink. Not the best pen ever made, but no issues with it, it's a pen. The pencil is well made, works like any other mechanical pencil with .5mm lead. The erasure works well too, although it is smaller and you can't extend it like other mech pencils. I recommend getting the refill kit (also expensive) which has erasers lead and ink refills. I love the flat black finish, it has a texture that is smooth, but not slippery, very nice. The clip is perfect for flight suits, it goes right over the cloth of the pen slot, and holds it in place. Some pens have issues going over thicker cloth, this one doesn't. Overall, the pen looks like it was made for flightsuits, maybe it was, it's called the Aviator after all. I am recommending this to all of the guys in my squadron.
