I needed to drill over 300 7/16" holes in steel and needed a drill press to do it. My application was probably more than this unit was designed for but it handled it pretty well, with a little patience. The laser cross hair was way more handy than I would have guessed, and was exact right out of the box. Others complained about the white LED light not being bright enough, and while I wouldn't use it to illuminate a prison yard, it definitely helped reduce shadows. Maybe I got lucky, some of the other reviews mention problems that I did not experience. The assembly was really easy. I used some thread locker on the items I did not want to vibrate loose. The chuck spins very straight and true. Yes it has plastic spindles, but at this price ($149) i would expect most brands will also. I bolted this down on a wood stand and it does not vibrate as bad some videos show. It is a little loud, but not too bad. The laser "x" is dead on. The light is basically useless, it is not very bright. Just a single led. The appearance of the press is really good, if that matters. This comes packaged really well, lots of foam to protect the contents. No scratches or dings. I drilled some test holes in wood and metal, just make sure you adjust the speed with the pulleys for what you are drilling into. There is a guide under the top cover that states what material needs what speed and shows how the belt should be on the pulleys which is very helpful. So far I am satisfied with this drill press, no complaints at all. ... show more

i would not call this top quality, it doesn't feel like the components are that beefy.. but it does the job and seems to drill through steel on the slowest setting with no problem... a bit of vibration until you make contact , then it drills true and does a decent job . good enough for a tinkerer like me... light and laser were spot on for me and assembly went smoothly. it's also fairly quiet and smooth.... again aside from a slight wobble when free spinning . ... show more

I really like the laser feature because you can dial it in basically right on the money. It took some getting used to on the adjustments. My recommendation when you're tightening the adjustments, don't go too tight because your laser lines will move as you do so. Bringing it to snug should be fine I have not had mine move yet, and I have used it several times since I received it. The speed change is fairly easy and the chart is very nice to have and reference from for different materials and applications. I knew going in this would get me by until my larger drill press was fixed. Overall this thing is built pretty good. Easy to assemble, packaged well. Mine had a little runout issue at first then I took the chuck out and reinstalled It got better . It's not a precision machining drill, but pretty good for its size. I started with 1/4" steel plate with a 1 1/2" hole saw. It did rather well with cutting oil. "I honestly thought I'd burn the motor up right at the start. It didn't. The belt slipped some on the plastic pulleys and the motor has some sort of cut out when it gets stuck. Worked pretty good. I then went onto 3/8" aluminum plate with a 1-3/8" hole saw "not carbide tipped" and it did pretty good even with the galling. I'm hard on equipment and this little sucker did good for what it is. ... show more

    • Exceptional quality for an inexpensive machine.
The media could not be loaded. As a retired machine builder, installer and repairman, I was looking for an inexpensive but reliable press for making small parts for gizmos, gadgets, robotics and animatronics (my Hobbies). I don't need and this is not a production or job shop quality machine. Buying this on a 40% off tool sale for $160, was a steal! This press runs smooth and quietly. It drills accurately and cleanly. It has all required adjustability. The lasers once adjusted are rock steady and dead on accurate. The 5 speeds cover any material I will ever use. All drill presses are extremely top heavy and much taller than the base width, thus securely bolting the press to the table is necessary to avoid damage and personal injury.     • Bad bearing, bad pulley
Everything arrived and I was impressed by the heft and general good quality of everything. Packaged well, everything assembled really easily. Running for the first time, it was incredibly noisy. The sound is a squeaking and a grinding noise. I thought the belt might be loose but after running it with the pulley guard open it wobbles considerably, making it contact the belt as it rotates. The crunching/grinding noise is probably a bad bearing. Brand new unit that has serious issues day 1. Pretty disappointing. ... show more

Works excellent. Lasers weren't lined up right but are easily adjusted per instructions. Moving belt takes about 1min for speed changes. Have used this for a dozen wood and metal projects and everything is smooth and easy. Will have this forever most likely.
