  • Never gets old.
This is truly a genie who expresses laughter when facing his enemies, without any fear of defeat. He has made it his quest to do what no other genie would do or think of. Chuck & Nancy found the lamp & discovered a genie like no other, He does much more then make wishes. He is a constant body guard to Chuck & Nancy every time they put the ring halves together & call out his name, up until they return the lamp & Shazzan to its rightful owner, only then will he send them home. Chuck & Nancy's own tricks include (The cloak of invisibility) & (A magic rope) & a flying camel named Kabooby created by Shazzan. No matter what his foes try to do they never gain very much of an advantage over Shazzan. I think that's what I like about the show. All the jokes Shazzan comes up with while he's facing them. He's never really too serious when they try to match his powers. Shazzan only makes it look like he's over & done with just for a few seconds, before returning to finish off his foe. Chuck & Nancy I like them too. I think Aladdin & the other genie in both those movies is flat out Stupid. This one has more to it as far as adventure goes. I love this show. Never gets old. ... show more

  • An under-rated but entertaining Hanna-Barbera classic...
I purchased this DVD earlier in November and it arrived a couple of days ago...a day or two earlier than expected. As a fan of classic Hanna-Barbera cartoons I knew of "Shazzan" but wasn't as familiar with it beyond the vague descriptions I'd come across on-line. I knew it was about two twins, Nancy and Chuck, who each have one half of a broken ring. When the rings are connected and they say 'Shazzan', a genie appears. The genie is typically called on to get one or the other out of trouble or is sometimes called for frivolous reasons. Villains show up each episode...some of the villains display potent forms of magic themselves and battle Shazzan. Although, in the end, Shazzan wins the battles there are some episodes where it appears like he's met his match. Janet Waldo voices Nancy. Jerry Dexter voices Chuck. Barney Phillips is credited as the voice of Shazzan, the Genie. Don Messick, in addition to voicing the flying camel, Kaboobie, can be heard as an assortment of villains and incidental characters. Vic Perrin is another voice actor who provides vocals for numerous villains. There are 18 half hour episodes comprised of two 11 minute adventures each. This gives the series a total of 36 stories included in those 18 half hour episodes, spread over 2 discs. There are 9 half hour episodes per disc...18 stories per disc as you'll see on the main menu. ... show more

  • A classic cartoon about the Arabian Knights
Thanks to my Dad, I've always been a huge fan of the classic Hanna Barbara cartoons, specifically their superhero/action shows, such as "Space Ghost", "The Impossibles", and "Jonny Quest". For the time, the animation was pretty good, and the art styles often evoked a comic book or pulp magazine feel. This series told the story of two siblings, Chuck and Nancy, who discover a pair of magic rings that, when put together, summon an all powerful genie named Shazzan. Upon their discovery, the kids are magically transported to the ancient times of the Arabian knights, and in order to get home, they must return the ring to its rightful owner. Naturally, being a continuing, Saturday morning cartoon, they never did make it home, but none the less, every episode is packed with action and adventure, as the kids travel around on a magic flying camel named Kaboobie (that sounds a bit like Scooby Doo). I always liked Kaboobie, thinking the concept was a bit more unique and original than just giving the kids a magic carpet. Pretty much every episode involves some villain trying to steal the rings to possess the genie, and/or separate the kids so they can't summon Shazzan (to which the plans always fail). Once Shazzan comes, the threat is pretty much over, as really nothing can defeat him. Had this been made now a days, I'd be more picky about the plot holes and characterization and such, but considering the time period, as well as the fact that this is pretty much on the level of "Scooby Doo", it is what it is. Shallow as some of the plots and characters might be, it's still nothing short of fun. If you're a Hanna Barbara fan, this is a nice set to add to your collection. It's made print on demand, so barring one short special feature (an interview with Bruce Timm and some other animators inspired by these old cartoons), you just get all the episodes (the quality of which is pretty crisp and clear). Here's hoping Warner Bros. decides to remake some of these classic cartoons, as they really deserve a comeback, and we need more than just another incarnation of Scooby Doo, folks. ... show more

  • Excellent cartoon my young masters
This is an enjoyable Hanna-Barbara action cartoon from 1967. Two kids find a treasure trove off the coast of Maine. In the trove is a ring in two pieces. When they bring the two pieces together and say the magic word inscribed on it "Shazzan" they are transported back to the time of the Arabian Nights and a Genie appears. In order to get back home they must find the original owner of the ring and in doing so travel about on various adventures encountering sorcerers, monsters and the like, frequently calling upon the power of Shazzan the Genie. Shazzan has provided them with a flying camel that they utilize for transport. This is an enjoyable watch and I have added it to my collection of Hanna Barbara action toons which include Space Ghost/Dino Boy, Birdman/Galaxy Trio, Herculoids, Moby Dick/The Mighty Mightor, and others. Character design by the legendary Alex Toth who also designed all the above mentioned characters. The best of the 1960's action cartoons, far surpassing the Marvel toons of '66. ... show more
