  • Great Sharpening Stone. 3000/8000 Excellent Results. Quality Product.
I was getting nowhere trying to sharpen our "nice" kitchen knives with my old oily Arkansas stone. Based on positive reviews, I decided to purchase the Sharp Pebble 400/1000 stone, the 3000/8000 stone and the Gladius Leather Strop. It was a great decision. To put Sharp Pebble to the test, I chose to sharpen a collection of various DULL Cutco knives and Spanish Henckel knives. I followed the soaking and prepping instructions for the stones and strop and then set out to sharpen the 10 DULL kitchen knives. It is important to read and follow the prep directions! I started out at the 400 and worked my way all the way to the 8000 then finished all of them off with the prepared strop. I am very proud of the results. These run of the mill “nice” knives are now VERY sharp. The Sharp Pebble product tutorial materials are super easy to read and follow. You need only apply some patience and practice. The Sharp Pebble products work very well and accommodate my skill set. I have full confidence in the Sharp Pebble products. When I am equally confident in my skills I will start sharpening our premium German Wusthof and German Henckel knives. The products arrived on time and very well packaged-no product damage or defects whatsoever. The Sharp Pebble products are great. I recommend purchasing the Sharp Pebble products. ... show more

  • Reasonable Quality and Works Well Enough
I'm a long time occasional knife maker and take pride in my sharpening. I use a 1200 grit diamond on a jig for "sharpening", and a very hard, diamond-impregnated rawhide strip glued to wood for the final finish and hair-popping sharpness. It's worked beautifully for years, and usually, all I have to do is hit the rawhide 5-10 strokes to restore full sharpness. If my method is precise and easy, why try anything else? Because I wanted to try an 8000 grit water stone and see what all the buzz is about. So I bought this one. I took a screaming sharp, 17 Deg. small chef's knife and hit it a few strokes it on the 3000. It became less sharp, which is understandable. It would barely shave paper. Under magnification, the edge looked pretty fine but had a dull slurry-induced texture. That's understandable. I then "polished" it with the 8000 grit side. It still looked dull under 10x magnification, having no "polish" or shine at all. That was unexpected. It did shave paper moderately well, but not like it did. The sharpness is not up to my standards. I then touched up the knife a few strokes on my reliable diamond-impregnated rawhide, using15000 grit. Yikes, that knife got scary sharp. My conclusion is, a fine grit water stone only adds 1 step to my sharpening process for a very minimal sharpness increase. I have also concluded the 8000 grit is probably less than 8000 grit. Otherwise, the stone and kit are really good quality, but probably no better than the cheaper ones. I think most people will be happy with this if they use it with accuracy and patience. Recommended, with caveats. ... show more

  • Really Good Stones (Bundled with 400/1000 stones)
Can achieve a really sharp edge with these stones. These were my first stones that I really learned to sharpen on. As long as you're only trying to sharpen and not repair or regrind an edge, these will do the job. 400 to 1000 alone is enough to get a razor edge. Would definitely recommend to anyone that doesn't sharpen often. There are a couple of things I need to mention though: 1. I found out that leaving them submerged in water all the time causes the stones to degrade. The stones develop a film that floats om the water and embeds into the surface of the stones. Also rust spots will tend to form if the stones are not completely cleared of all the metal removed from the knives. Not being able to leave them submerged is a hassle for me if I want to use them everyday. I have to make sure to soak them 30 mins everyday before I open to ensure they are saturated. 2. The stones become closer to 400 grit the more you use the leveling stone (I use it as a dressing stone. 400 grit is not coarse enough to level a stone). After flattening its best to use another grit thats close to the one of the stone. Eg after flattening the 3000 I would recommend using 3000 grit to dress the stone. Can be done with another 3000 grit stone, sandpaper, or abrasive powder. Haven't used them with high carbon knives but im sure it wouldnt be a problem. If these were splash and go stones, I would never buy another stone for work again. Going to replace these for nagura splash and go stones. ... show more

  • A nice combination of grits for the finishing touch.
If you find sharpening with a fast-cutting, 1200-grit diamond plate is enough for most of your needs, but occasionally want/need to put a super fine edge on that chisel, plane blade, or knife, this 3000/8000 grit two-sided waterstone will do the trick. Everything about this is "as promised" in the description. Wood base is almost so nice you don't want to use it. Recommend. Really happy with this purchase. ... show more

  • Straight Razors? You Bet!
Recently purchased to hone my straight razors. I looked at a similar Norton set up and got sticker shock. My straight razors had all fallen to a state of disrepair as my previous hone came to the end of a glorious career and just couldn't deliver anymore. For a few months, I shaved with safety razors and shavettes. At one point,, I even grew a beard. Fact of the matter was I missed my straight razors and wanted them back on line. The Sharp Pebble set offered an affordable, "fix it now" solution. No doubt, if I was a honing wonk, I could probably nit pick it to death, but I'm not. I'm just a regular guy who enjoys a well honed razor and a good straight razor shave. In this context I just couldn't be happier with these stones. They've truly delivered ridiculously keen edges the likes of which I've never seen. The platform and rubber gasket provide a totally stable platform. So far I've revived four straight razors. All of which scared the whiskers from my smiling face rendering a catfish belly smooth shave. You can bet when I wear these stones out, I'll be back to replace them in kind. For the price, you just can't beat it. ... show more
