  • Not terrible. Not fantastic.
The reason this gets 3 stars and not 5 is because on the Hakko website, you can get quality stuff which performs better, for a little less while it is on clearance. It is thin tape, the thickness isn't terrible. It is heat resistant - when applying 300 C to the tape, the tape doesn't deform, smoke, melt, catch on fire, etc... it doesn't do anything other than cook the adhesive. At one point it looked like there was liquid on the underside of the tape ( I put the tape over a hole so I could see what was happening to the underside and so the item wouldn't act as a heatsink during testing ) but this may have just been the light. Heat makes it so it doesn't stick at all - although when I applied the tape to the item ( A Hakko aluminum tip tray, the one which holds 12 tips and is blue and can be bought for around $17 USD - I have 2 ) originally, it looked like the heat helped it stick to the aluminum in places where it wasn't sticking originally. The adhesion is the biggest problem... On most tapes, a little bit of finger oil doesn't phase it - but for these, it does. A tiny bit of oil means that entire section which it was exposed to is now useless. ie: You have to handle this tape with tweezers so I'll have to buy some sort of tape dispenser which doesn't expose any of the tape to air prior to using it. The tape does ok sticking to itself, especially on the roll, but when you unroll it and try to tape up a wire it is incredibly difficult, especially in tight spaces. If you tape large flat surfaces with some texture, ie the top of a PCB with Surface Mounted Components, or exposed solder test spots - then it works quite well. It sticks well to plastic surfaces too. However, any spot you touch with your fingers has to go because it just will NOT stick after the smallest amount of oil gets on the tape. I personally keep my hands as clean as possible, but the oils are natural and it doesn't matter how many times you blot with paper towels, or clean with rubbing alcohol before using the tape - there will be some oils left over and that oil will get on the tape. Handling the tape is difficult with tweezers but it can be done, but if the tweezers were swiped clean with your fingers to get rid of dust, etc.. then the issue with adhesion is there. I use the orange tab to grab the tape so I don't touch it at all and it works well like that, but I lose a lot of control over handling the tape which I would like to have. I just re-use the orange tap and it builds up in thickness because just a little bit of tape is left on it after each time it is used / cut. With all this being said, I can find a use for each of the sizes although a wider one would be easier to control and could always be cut widthwise instead of lengthwise so I would recommend a wider one over a narrow one if you don't know the sizes you'll be using as I have yet to use the small ones. Taping actual wires - don't... use heat shrink tubes with glue built in if you can. If you can't then this may work but I've had the same issue with the tape sticking to wires as I have with the oils from my hand. This could be because of tinning, and flux, or byproducts from the soldering process and the fact I didn't clean the wires after because there was no room to without submerging it in water - which may be fine for PCBs ( sealed components, etc... I wouldn't do this with anything with a wire coil, caps, and so on.. but for sealed SMCs, etc.. I haven't ever had an issue with it as long as a proper drying is done - usually using rubbing alcohol to displace the water and evaporate helps too ), but for wires the water has a lot more places to go and you won't get it out and that just leads to a big problem later on. IF the surface of a solder joint gets cloudy - that isn't a big deal as the internal structure is good. I am giving it a 3 because it does have some uses and does stick well to some surfaces. Doing it again, for the use cases described, I'd probably just go with conformal coating, or a higher quality product. The Hakko site has a lot of different types for incredibly inexpensive prices right now - I got anti-static tapes, this type of tape, and more and it seems to work better than this stuff for close to the same cost ( actually less because it is the wider variants ). Heat resistance lost a few stars simply because the adhesive doesn't hold up to the heat, but the tape does. Adhesion lost points because it loses to heat, to natural oils on your hand ( no matter how little there is ), by being exposed to the air and collecting tiny particles of dust renders it useless in a short amount of time, etc... The thickness is pretty good. ... show more

  • Very nice
Very easy to work with. And the different sizes were a nice plus. Unlike other thermal tape I've used, this tape doesn't bind up on itself.

  • Best tape there is!
Make several tumblers a day and use this tape daily and never had a problem! Highly recommend!

  • Holds good but color sublimated on tumbler
The tape holds good but if any of the tape touches the tumbler it turned it yellow. It’s like the color from the tape sublimated on the blank. This is the first time this has happened so I hope it’s just a fluke.

  • Great Function just not for me
This tape works great no heat transfer marks but I either didn’t read it well enough or was mislead. The smallest roll is so thin I’m not sure what I’ll even use it for. I used this heat tape for sublimation products works as it should but the two smallest rolls are just too thin for me. I would buy a different bulk pack personally. ... show more

  • stained my white tumblers
I am frustrated!! The tape holds well, but it stained the white tumblers I was sublimating on. Bright yellow marks where the tape touched the cup. Thankfully it is on the bottom of the tumbler, but makes it look like I did something wrong! I wont be using this where it actually touches the cup!!!
