  • Excellent performance for the price.
This thing is awesome, especially for the price. It can detect temperature differences of slightly less than 1 degree F, so heat leaks or missing insulation is easy to spot. You can see if a vehicle has been driven or an electrical outlet has powered a high-load device like a coffeemaker recently. Powered electrical or electronic devices are also easy to spot--even low-power devices like an inactive cell phone charger stand out. You can see handprints on walls and drops of warm water on the ground for a few minutes--the exact time depends on the size and temperature and wind. It is a true thermal imager; it doesn't need any any ambient visible light at all to work. Build quality is good; I wouldn't expect it to survive being run over by a tank, use as a hammer, or repeated drops onto concrete, but you don't need to handle it with kid gloves, either, The display has a clear plastic panel over it, and the lenses, USB port, and card slot are all recessed enough to give them a reasonable amount of protection. I would say it is about like a decent-quality cell phone--handle it with a reasonable degree of care and it will last for years, but I wouldn't expect it to handle much abuse. I don't believe it's waterproof The manual isn't much, but you don't really need it. The menus are simple and clearly labeled, and the screen labels the current function of the buttons. The only thing that isn't clearly labeled is powering on and off--you hold the center button down for about 2 seconds to do that. The unit will capture still images, but not video--the frame rate is only about 5Hz. I'm sure this is one of the compromises necessary to reach the price point. Capture is simple, just press the right button and the current screen image is saved to the memory card. Accessing captured images is easy; just connect the unit to a computer with a standard USB cable, and the micro SD card will show up as a removeable external drive. The flashlight is activated via a dedicated button on the right side of the unit. The button toggles between high power, low power, and off. You can adjust the high and low power settings in the menu. The imager does not need to be on for the flashlight to work. The beam is aimed the same as the thermal imager, so you can see what the thermal is looking at. This helps identify the source of a heat signature when the thermal view alone is not clear. The beam is slightly wider and more diffused than most flashlights, but not so much as to make it useless. If you want to light something up 100 yards away, you should probably use a standalone light, but for nearby things, it works well. The device is light and compact, and could easily be carried all day. A few minor annoyances: By default, all images captured are watermarked with the "Seek Thermal" logo. You have to go into the menu to disable the watermark. Captured images are overlaid with the same square crosshair shown on the screen, and the temperature in the square. The overlay is always white, so if you are measuring heat sources you cannot see the crosshair or temp reading if the color scheme you've selected displays heat as white. You can't change the crosshair overlay design or color. Fortunately, there are several color schemes to choose from, one of which is a negative B&W that shows heat as black and cold as white. The battery cannot be removed/replaced without disassembling the device. But the internal battery is sufficient to run it for several hours, especially if you have the screen brightness turned down. You can also connect an external battery to the USB port, and use the device while recharging it. The unit has an automatic shutoff that prevents battery depletion if you forget to turn it off. But if you aren't periodically pressing buttons while using it, it will shut off without warning. If you plan on using it longer than the auto-shutoff time, take a picture once in a while--any button press will reset the timer. The default setting is 15 minutes, but you can change it in the menu. The unit comes with a carrying strap, USB charger, and a USB cable, but no carrying pouch. A Condor I Pouch (Black, 5 x 3 x 1.5-Inch) is just about perfectly sized, and it has an extra compartment you could use for a cable and charger or spare battery. And you can configure the MOLLE loop on the back as a simple belt loop or attach the pouch to a backpack or tactical vest. Overall, great value and performance for the price. It has a variety of uses, and could pay for itself just with it's ability to identify heat leaks. 4.5 stars, rounded up to 5. ... show more

  • Solid at short range
If you are specifically looking at a heat source or otherwise trying to use this as a tool to find a heat source (or cold) at short range, this does a good job. I can identify wood framing behind walls due to temp difference (there needs to be a decent temp difference between indoors and out) as well as where heat or cold are escaping. It's useful for looking at electrical panels and HVAC as well. If you are looking at this for more outdoors type activities like to spot animals use I question its usefulness. I was able to spot a rabbit at about 30 ft, which admittedly was cool but there was no way for me to identify it was a rabbit, although given the size of the heat signature I did correctly guess it was before lighting it up with the built-in flashlight. At approximately 100 ft I could not spot via the reveal display (until I spotted him and looked for the thermal signature specifically) a person on a balcony. Now there were a bunch of other heat signatures in the frame (like lights) so if those were not present its possible that person would have stuck out more. I was hoping for a bit longer reach with regards to being able to easily spot a person size target but it is possible that was due to the particular set of heat signature in frame. As for non IR performance related items the built-in flashlight has a fairly wide and diffuse light, very useful for lighting up things close up and at a somewhat reasonable distance in dark outdoor environments (best guess 80 ft or so, but I haven't been in an environment where I can truly test that out to its full extent yet). The menu system requires no documentation and is very simple, great job on the UI. The build quality is far better than I was expecting. The screen is recessed such that if you placed it upside down on a table, you would not scratch the display. The same goes for the IR sensor and the flashlight up front, both highly recessed and protected. I really wish this came with some sort of a carrying case with belt loop, or one was at least offered as an add on. I haven't used this enough yet to really say much about the battery life but it does seem that one charge will last for many hours if the percentage is accurate. In the coming weeks I'll have the opportunity to use this in more outdoors type situations and just more in general. I hope to update my review with more and better information as I do. UPDATE 11/25/2015 I've had more of an opportunity now to use this in an outdoor type setting so wanted to update my review. My initial guess regarding the flashlight usable distance of 80 ft seems to have been pretty spot on. I was also on a colder evening able to spot a dog moving at 80 ft without issue and I expect I could still out to around 100 ft without issue, possibly further but I didn't have that opportunity and I only knew it was a dog because well it was my friends dog. At that distance you see a small white something on the screen (assuming white hot is your mode of viewing). It definitely is easier to spot things when the ambient temperature is cooler which makes perfect sense. I never had the opportunity to spot a person, or anything else, past 100 ft but could do so easily at that distance. So I think this is usable outdoors as long as you aren't trying to see through brush or obstructions and have realistic expectations. Overall I'd give this a 4.5 out of 5 total rating so I am revising my previous rating of 4 stars and increasing that to 5 stars. ... show more

  • Better Than Expected
Style: RevealPRO Pattern Name: Camera
I have had this for about 3 years. I've used it at work, checking to see which relay was off and which were on. Off relay was dark blue/black while the energized relay was orange. Used it to check my house and workshop for heat loss in winter. I could clearly see from outside the shop building where the insulation was missing and that most heat was lost through the aluminum overhead doors. I like that it lets you select a temp range. The more defined your range, the more colors you see with small temp differences. Menu system and battery life were fine. After months of non-use, it powers up no problem. Only things I'd like different are the form factor and to be able to record video, not only photos. A form factor more like a small camera with viewer on back instead of on the top. Minor gripe. Video capability would really be great though. To get the best out of this, you need to set the high and low temp range. ... show more

  • Best value at the moment. Tons of uses.
Compared to similarly priced devices, this one has a much larger thermal sensor and display resolution. This device is super useful for home owners, travelers, or spies. It can be used to look for trespassers/animals in the dark. It can also be used to quickly look for anything that might be overheating in case a fire alarm is going off with no obvious cause. Another good use is looking for spy devices/hidden cameras while travelling. Any running electronics will give off heat. You can also see which security cameras are dummies and which are real if you have a need to know that sort of thing. It can also let you know if someone recently was driving a car, walking barefoot through an area, opened a door, or which keys they pressed. ... show more
