This drive runs HOT if you are writing a lot of data to it, I had to keep a fan on it while I was doing stress-testing... I suppose its to be expected from an enterprise drive designed to go in a data center with good airflow, but its a little concerning. These drives are rated to up to 60c though, so it should be okay. Also, I am noticing very high seek and read error rates in SMART data.. Cursory research shows this may be normal for Seagate drives? This is my first Seagate so I'm not sure, but there are 0 uncorrectable errors, so I think it should be fine. Since this is an enterprise drive, you may want to disable TLER/ERC if using in a desktop as this is a feature intended for RAID arrays not desktop use, the command on linux is 'smartctl -l scterc,0,0 /dev/sdX', replacing X with drive location, not sure what it is on windows but it should be similar except using windows syntax for drive location. This drive supports disabling TLER/ERC, which I was worried about, so if anyone has similar concerns, this drive supports the command. With TLER disabled there is really no reason not to use this drive, I'm not sure yet if the setting persists after reboot but that should be an easy fix if it doesn't, make sure to check though. Drive's speed is acceptable, pretty good actually. Oh, also, this drive is very quiet, I was very concerned reading all the reviews saying the drive was loud and I was basically expecting an explosion when it spun up, lol. But it is pretty much totally quiet, even writing I can barely hear it. Maybe if it was like 6 inches away from you it might be noticeable. I can't hear a thing in my case which is 3 feet from me. Spin-up is a bit noisy but after that it is fine. No more noisy than any other drive I've had. Note that the drive I got was manufactured in 2017 (darn resellers) maybe newer models are different, but I doubt it. Despite DOM 2017 the drive I got is running the latest firmware, which is nice. All in all, supposing nothing goes wrong in the future, these drives can't be beat for the price point and value they offer. Just make sure to give it some good airflow if you are writing a lot of data at once, and disable TLER for desktop use. EDIT: depending on workload this thing can indeed get quite noisy. I didn't notice it at all writing random data to disk for testing, but when automated backups run this thing churns out some serious noise. I assume this is the head(s) accessing random parts of disk as opposed to just contiguous writes. Still works good for a data drive that doesn't get much access, opening videos/music/etc is pretty much silent, but for heavy-access tasks you will want a ssd because this drive could 'drive' a person crazy. ... show more

As expected, this is a Seagate harddrive, so you can expect great quality. Swapping this new drive in took about 5 minutes, but I forgot that these new drives need to be formatted, so I spent a few minutes being confused about why it wasn't showing up and rebooting the computer 🤦♂️. Don't be like me, type 'disk management' in the windows search bar and click 'Create and Format Hard Disk Partitions,' select your unpartitioned drive, assign a letter, and format. Despite that hiccup, works great and currently filling it up with steam games as we speak. ... show more

The read/write speed is good, definitely fits the 3.5" SATA form factor-I thought they were packaged very well and of course had the anti-static wrap included. Things to be aware of beforehand: These 4TB drives are literally pushing the upper limit of what you can fit in 3.5". I have these set in a hard drive bay that holds 5 drives and you only get 2-3mm of air clearance between each drive, plus you will most likely want to cool them. Expect things to get very heavy in short time, I would say they're about 4-5lbs each. Last thing to note is the drives are not silent. You will most likely hear/feel them when they're performing a write operation. Check your power supply-seriously. These things need a lot of juice as they will all run at once during initial startup. I had to upgrade my PSU cause it totally slipped my mind. As far as the performance goes I can't complain, they're doing exactly as intended, 10/10 would buy again ... show more

This 16TB bare drive sold by HyperHawk and shipped by Amazon came nicely packaged in a proper hard drive box, wrapped in an anti-static bag, with plastic fittings on either end to suspend the drive within the box. The drive appears to be brand new/unused and passes SMART tests. It was manufactured mid-2022, which makes it about 7 months old on the day I purchased it. I entered the drive’s serial # on Seagate’s site and it shows that the drive has a 5 year warranty and the clock started ticking on the warranty on the mid-2022 manufacturing date. ... show more

Let’s be clear – if you want to pack your NAS or server with storage goodness, the Exos X16 is the one to go for. These are helium-filled, 9 platters, and have none of the drive bay limitations enforced on the IronWolf Pro and IronWolf models so you can safely use them to build massive arrays. Are they noisy? Depends on your definition of noisy. I purchased 4 of them to put into one of 3 SuperMicro SYS-5018R-M 1U Servers. Block-by-block testing and no issues so far and compared to the servers themselves, these drives are quiet. What about a warranty? Plugged the serial numbers into the Seagate site and they show as having 5-year warranty, expiring in 2028. Fantastic! And the price is exceptionally reasonable at just over two hundred bucks. My recommendation? Get it, and thank me later. ... show more

    • About the noise...

A lot of other reviewers have said these Exos drives are quiet, but many have also said they're loud. So what gives?? Here's what I figured out: This thing must have some heavy duty spindles inside, because the drive itself is quiet when reading/writing outside my enclosure. But INSIDE my enclosure, this drive rattles the crap out of my case when it reads/writes. Let me say that again: virtually silent outside my case, very loud inside my case. I'm guessing that since I'm installing this inside a Dell XPS desktop machine instead of a server or NAS, the built-in drive caddy isn't sturdy enough for the heavy duty parts inside, which is why in MY machine, this thing rattles the case and sounds like it's faxing someone or a dial-up modem or something. I added some sound proofing to my case and it's a bit better, and I need a drive with at least this much storage, so I'm gonna keep it anyway. Plus, mine DID have a manufacturer's retail warranty (purchased from HyperHawk). Speeds are decent, with 260+/- sequential reads/writes and 700ish IOPS. ... show more
