  • The calculator is a knock-off, but it still works fine.
I haven't ever owned a graphing calculator before, but my husband had one. I was aware of how expensive they can be back in the day, and deliberately chose statistics in college so I wouldn't have to buy one. These days I have seen them in the same price range as this calculator, and I assumed that they had just gone down in price as the technology became more mainstream. I was pretty excited to get this calculator for our math-obsessed (some might say gifted) 8-year-old since he spends hours on Desmos graphing things. First I showed it to my husband, and he got curious and started researching the things. I showed me how this calculator had been molded, likely from another calculator. He showed me the little notch on the top where fancier calculators have a port that connects them to each other. He showed me the grooves where better calculators have rubber feet. He showed me a calculator with a very similar shape that they maybe used but then moved the buttons around. He showed me that the name-brand graphing calculators do more than this one, and yes, they still are expensive. But a calculator like this can still help you get through your college algebra courses. This realization made me feel less excited about this calculator being a Christmas gift because I wasn't confident it would be solid anymore, and I just wanted him to experience it and help me do my review. Well, I shouldn't have been too disappointed, because my son absolutely loves this calculator. He takes it with him everywhere. He pleaded with me to let him read the instruction manual instead of his regular reading (we homeschool), and I capitulated. The manual has been clear enough that he has been able to figure out how to use it, so it checks out. In spite of him loving his new toy, my son said to give it 4* because it's not as good as Desmos at calculating complicated equations. Those were his words. I was kinda thinking 4* anyway. It's a good calculator and it does what it is supposed to do. But you get what you pay for, and this one won't do the things I saw my friends doing with theirs back when I was in high school and college. One of my friends used one of them to write a code so you could input a name or short phrase, and it would give you the names of musical notes, so you could use it for inspiration for one's composition assignments. He could plug it into a friend's calculator, and they were able grab that code and use it in their calculator too. They were mini-computers that really impressed me, especially given the more limited technology that was available to me back then. This calculator won't do all that, but it will graph equations. I don't pretend to understand to know all that it is capable of. Maybe my son will be able to code his own program, but even if he does, it will remain on his device alone, there will be no way to share it, and he won't be able to input any code from a computer either. Still, my son loves it and has already spent hours pouring through the book and learning how graphing calculators work. There's no denying that this calculator is a milestone in his math journey. I'm grateful for that. It's sweet to see how much he loves it and to see his excitement when he has graphed a new equation on it. We'll likely be giving him an upgraded version later on though. My husband says he'll need it as he progresses. But this one is good enough at this price point to do its job well. ... show more

  • Excellent budget-friendly graphing/scientific calculator
This graphing calculator is a remarkable tool that combines functionality and convenience. I especially like the integrated notepad feature, which allows me to easily jot down notes while performing calculations, enhancing productivity. The calculator supports ten different modes and four graphing functions, making it versatile enough for a range of mathematical tasks, from basic arithmetic to complex algebra and calculus. Its lightweight design (only 120g) and compact size ensure that it can be easily carried in a backpack or even a purse, making it perfect for on-the-go use in classrooms or offices. I found the most standout feature of this calculator to be its eye-friendly blue matte LCD screen, which significantly reduces glare and strain during extended use. This thoughtful design consideration is particularly beneficial for students who spend long hours studying. Additionally, the calculator's ability to erase notes with a single button press promotes environmental sustainability by reducing paper usage. ... show more

  • Works as expected
My daughter needed this calculator for chemistry and she's happy with it so far. It came with four AAA batteries. She said the layout is unique compared to others she's used and it was set to fractions, but with an easy fix of hitting "shift and equal" it switched it to decimals. It comes with a manual that's easy to read and understand. It's not the same quality as her old one, but does provide the needed functions for less money. Please note that it is not back lit. If on a budget, this is worth a try. ... show more

  • Good off-brand graphing calculator
My husband questioned why I ordered this, when he has a TI-84 from when he was in school. I asked if he was going to let our kids use it, and he agreed it was a good thing to order. You definitely need the instructions and to keep them nearby. I have them rubber banded to the case. They are pretty easy to follow with plenty of examples of what the screen should display. For our kids, they don't have the TI knowledge so learning this calculator's modes and functions should not be an issue. I am confident this will be more than they need to get through high school's math and chemistry classes. ... show more

  • Lot of features
Though it doesn't seem that long ago, the extremely expensive HP calculator I used as an engineering student in college over 30 years ago died relatively recently. A fresh battery replacement wouldn't bring it back to life. I purchased a simpler engineering calculator, but it doesn't have all the fancy bells and whistles as this one with graphing and such so I decided to pick this one up. Frankly, it's proving to be quite an adjustment after using my old calculator for so long, but so far, I'm happy. This calculator has a ton of features and while I knew the old system better, this one seems to attempt to make things a little easier. It even seems to do quite a bit more than my old one, which was more advanced than any round at the time. I feel it's worthy of a full set of stars, even if that's a bit begrudgingly because I'd still rather be on my old one. It's not this guy's fault though. ... show more
