  • Must have emergency tool
Product Packaging: Standard Packaging
The SCAXE5 is an excellent tool for your emergency kit. I don't consider this as something you would use as a camp axe, nor do I consider it a self defense hatchet or tomahawk, although it could be used for either, but it could best be described as a tactical entry and extraction tool making it perfect for an emergency kit. At just under 13 inches it is small enough to fit in a backpack, and just over 1.5 pounds, it's not too heavy either. The blade measures just over 3 inches and is made of SK5 high carbon stainless steel, and features a 1/4 inch black powder coated full tang with a nail pull / pry bar at the base of the handle. The blade came razor sharp, even shaved some arm hairs, and you can choke up high under the beard for precision detailed work. The glass filled nylon fiber handle scales are textured and contoured with a nice swell in the middle, and the handle has multiple grip sights and is angled at the bottom for better leverage on power strikes. While its not as ergonomic for using the spike, the spike does a fairly good job with minimal effort. The sheath is similar the the SOG Tactical Tomahawk, both of which I found to be flimsy and the snaps to be temperamental, so I am considering having a Godspeed Tactical kydex sheath made for it. Unlike other hatchets and tomahawks, the nail pull is very sharp and can cause some damage all on its own, so I recommend keeping it out of range of children at all times. If using for camping it is easy to leave it stuck in a trunk or low lying piece of wood, and the nail pull could easily catch someone running past it totally unaware, so please keep it up high in that scenario. I recommend the Scaxe5 over the SOG Tactical Tomahawk for its intended purpose, the blade is larger, spike is sharper, it has a full tang, and additional features, but it is also somewhat more expensive, however; I feel it is totally worth it and I highly recommend the SCAXE5! ... show more

  • Great item!
Product Packaging: Standard Packaging
This can be a self defense tool and a survival tool for camping and city areas. It’s also very sharp and the point on the pick side is great.

  • Good but the bulky handle wasn't for me.
Product Packaging: Standard Packaging
First impressions after just receiving it. It feels great and feels sturdy. It chops great and it's not bulky. I bought it with the intention of taking the bulky handle off and wrapping it in para cord. Ontario knives makes a similar one with the para cord but with a much higher price. If that's your intentions know that the handle is not really removable. It does have 6 screws and a lanyard hole that has a solid rivet through the handle. So it did take some prying to get the handle off and it likely voids the warranty. I did it anyway because that's why I bought it and I attached a pic so that you can see what that looks like. It gives it a thinner profile and emergency para cord. Also, the sheath does not keep the hatchet secure. First time using it, it fell out while running twice. So I got creative and attached a toggle button to secure it. See the attached pictures. ... show more

Product Packaging: Standard Packaging
Very nice hawk/hatchet. At one point I had about 15 different hawks on my list of possibilities. I'm no expert (yet) but it was what I was looking for. The pry bar / nail puller on the end are stronger and the pry bar is shaped correctly. I had read some reviews on other products that said the pry bars were more for show and either not strong or were not angled correctly. Blade comes sharp. I was mainly looking for something far my car that would fit nicely between my seat and middle console. This will easily get me and my loved ones out of a vehicle, easy to grab if I'm a first responder in an emergency, not to mention a nice deterrent if someone tries to carjack me. Very solid piece of metal. For the price, quality, and functions that I was looking for, I made the right choice. ... show more

  • Good sharp axe.
Product Packaging: Standard Packaging
This axe is made of high quality steel. It came pretty sharp right out of the box, sharp enough to cut a finger. But I sharpened it much much more then how it came. I sharpened it all the way up to about 200,000 grit with diamond spray on a leather strop and now its like a large razor blade that will cut through things very easily. It was very easy to sharpen too, if you try to sharpen it you have to hold it at a very flat angle. If it is difficult for you to find a flat angle to sharpen it at just draw a 1/8 inch thick line across the sharp edge and make sure you are sharpening the marker off. Do this for every different grit you use to sharpen the axe. If you don't you will just round over the sharp edge and you wont get it too sharp that way. This axe also seems like it will have good edge retention I don't know if it is because the steel is hard or whatever, but something makes me feel like it will hold a sharp edge for a long time. I also attached a lanyard with a noose knot to the lanyard hole in the bottom of the handle right above the pry bar that this axe has. It's good to have a lanyard just in case you get knocked out in a fight that way the axe will still be attached to your hand when you wake up. Or if you loose your grip while swinging it too so it won't go flying off and hit something you don't want hit. The pry bar seems to be OK. The V tapers down to a fairly sharp point so it would make for a pretty good nail puller or even a door entry tool. The MILWAUKEE utility knife above the axe is also a great buy. Perfect hand feel with a pocket clip and an arm that slides out of the handle for a extra blade storage. ... show more

This seems to be a very durable, versatile and user-friendly ax I basically bought it to put into my collection.

  • Hardly hardened
Product Packaging: Standard Packaging
Nice design. Steel is weak. Trashed the blade on first use. Screws come lose in handle. A nail puller seems a waste on a tool without a hammer head. Pointed end not sharpened. It looks good, but I wouldn’t buy again.
