Let me start by saying that I am a fan of Scapa hiking boots. I've had several pairs of Scarpa Kailash GTX (used for frequent hikes and light backpacks) as well as a pair of Zanskar GTX (used for week-long heavy backpacks), and all have performed wonderfully. So, I ordered a pair of Zodiac Plus GTX hiking boots fully expecting that they would be as good, or better, than my other Scarpa boots. What a disappointment! The sole material is very thin, and very susceptible to damage by sharp rocks, like the broken traprock I hiked on yesterday. After less than 20 miles of hiking the Vibram (R) soles have become severely damaged. Several lugs have sheared completely off, in one place revealing the underlying yellow mid-sole material. Some lugs remain attached as flaps. In the arch of one boot there is even a slit-like puncture that has exposed the underlying orange midsole material. (See photos.) I expect to get hundreds of miles out of a boot, and it is clear these boots will be incapable of that. So they are being returned. Due to the fragility of the sole material, I cannot recommend these boots to any serious hiker, even though they do look good, are comfortable and have provide good traction on dry rock. Just got back from a four day Sierra trip wearing these. I have an older pair of Scarpa Kailash in the same size (EU 43) and discovered to my dismay that Scarpa made many of their boot models narrower in the toe. I don't have hugely wide toes, but wide enough to sometimes buy boots in wide sizes. These have a reasonably wide fit in the front, and lock my narrow heels down fine. One of the reviews complains about the sole rigidity, but that is actually what I look for in a backpacking boot vs. a dayhiking boot. I put some green Superfeet insoles in these and walked around in the office wearing them for a week to break them in, and then did a local dayhike to convince myself that they really fit. My feet measured 9.5 US last I had them checked (years ago), but I usually wear size 10 US boots. I was a bit worried that the colorful stripes might spook the golden trout while fly fishing, but the trail dust and my pant cuffs seemed to hide them well enough :) Edit: 7-Sept-2018. Well, it had to happen I guess. After my last trip there was a chunk of the vibram sole missing on the right boot, exposing the yellow plastic midsole underneath. I wore them a total of 12 days this season, with a fair amount of cross-country / off-trail stuff, fairly severe. Never seen a vibram sole do this before. I'm going to see if I can get them re-soled or warrantied, because I like them so much. ... show more

Amazing right out of the box. Didn’t need much breaking in (some rubbing on the heel, but I’ve yet to find a boot that doesn’t do that to me). Toe box: wide, I have flat feet so this is welcomed. Great protection on very rocky terrain Ankle support: Fantastic. A lot of typical high Colorado talus on their first hike. No ankle twists or tweaks. Dry Rock: stable and sticky. No issues Wet rock: This one worried me, but crossing a few creek crossings on wet boulders gave me a a ton of confidence in these. Sand, dirt, small rocks on steep slopes: We did Missouri Mountain, a Colorado 14er notorious for a section of steep sandy rock and these things gripped like goat’s feet. No issues and no sliding while going downhill on steep sand. Water proof: No issues in water. I did put some suede water proofer on it the day before the hike. Durability: unlike some bad previous reports, no issues with the soles. They actually felt really comfortable and protected my feet and toes extremely well. I only used these for one hike so far, so take the durability with a grain of salt. Though, the hike was 11 miles and 4,500 ft of gain on a tough Colorado 14er. Honestly 5/5. I’ve had 2 mids, 1 trail shoe, and 1 true mountain boot, and these beat them all easily. Very impressed. Will report back if I find durability issues. ... show more

Although I've only had this product for a short time, I've worn them every day to hike our Washington, Idaho steep mountains & canyons. It consist of a variety loose rock, jagged cliffs and allot of vertical altitude. I used to use my Whites, heavy forestry/firefighting style boots. They last a long time, but as I stated they are very heavy. I'm 40 plus years old now so any edge I can get conducting my field work I'll take it. I did allot of searching on the internet, trying to get the most bang for the buck on boots. I bought these and a similar "TECH" style in orange, both provide amazing traction & comfort. I plan to rotate them as needed, break in time is very short, I also added air cell insoles. If you desire comfort & confidence on the trial or even blazing your own trail as I do, then hand over your $ and enjoy the SCARPA Zodiac. ... show more

I am a day hiker. Over the last 38 months, I have hiked 2,983 miles all in the original pair of Scarpa Men's Zodiac Plus Gtx Hiking Boots. I live in the mountains of Northern Georgia where hiking elevations can reach 3,000 with rocky and heavily rooted terrain. I just finished a 10-mile hike through 4 inches of snow, crossing streams and climbing down steep rocky passes. My feet were warm but never hot for the entire hike. After three years, there were no leaks from crossing streams and finally, my feet have never blistered or fatigued. The perfect boot for me, a 72-year-old male. ... show more

    • Just what I had hoped for.

I purchased this hiking boot after an extensive search for just the right boot. My left foot is slightly larger than my right which presents challenges when purchasing a hiking boot. I also teach hiking and backpacking in a university PE program so boots are an integral part of my job. The Scarpa has a larger than normal toe box and runs wide for many people while the heel is a little tight. I removed the insoles and replaced them with thinner ones solving the heel problem and just use thicker wool socks solving the toe box problem on the right foot. The boot has a sturdy shank and stiff sole but the suede uppers make it feel like a tennis shoe. It has the same sole feel as the Asolo 520 but half of the weight!
