This is a cute radio. A bit retro. It feels solid overall, but the controls feel very flimsy and cheap. The sound is fantastic. Clear, with a lot of volume. The tone controls can fine tune it to your own liking. Control layout bothers me a bit. Tuning and Volume are on opposite sides. I would prefer they be on the same side. May just be a personal preference. The tuning knob has some play and tuning is a bit stiff. You can jiggle the tuning knob and it has no effect on the dial. And tuning feels quite stiff overall and a challenge to fine tune to stations. Would have preferred it be a smoother tuning mechanism. I was lucky and got the radio at a really attractive price (quite a bit lower than standard). I feel okay with the radio at the price I paid. But at the regular price, I think I would feel it's lacking a bit. The screw-in FM antenna is a strange quirk. It seems to get great reception, but it's always extended unless you actually remove it. I think I would prefer a standard telescoping whip antenna. All-in-all if you're looking for a sturdy portable basic radio this can fit the bill. ... show more

Using this little radio for listening to baseball games and local am radio as well as taking it camping with me. It’s a nice looking radio. Feels solid. Has a clear sounding speaker that is more than loud enough for listening to ball games or talk radio. Tuner is easy to dial and control. Batteries have lasted me 24 hours or so so far and show no sign of slowing down. Audio jack worked just fine with a set of earbuds. Carrying strap is just fine. DeOnly negative is that when plugged in to 120v plug (not included, called sangean for this) the radio definitely has a buzz to it no matter how far you take the radio from the outlet. Don’t buy this. Just use the batteries. Overall I love the size/look/sound of this little radio ... show more

    • Excellent Sound Quality but Reception & Controls don't compare with PR-D7

<This is an updated review. I originally gave it 4 stars but after using the radio for a while and comparing it with the PR-D7, I'm dropping it down to 3 stars.> I've tried quite a few portable AM-FM radios lately and so far this is the best sounding small radio of the bunch. Definitely more full-range audio than what you would expect for these dimensions (roughly 5"x7"x2.25"). The addition of separate bass & treble controls really helps alot. Too bad Sangean doesn't put this speaker/amp combo in some of their other radios because it would make them alot better. Reception is a different story. AM sensitivity is just ok - definitely not as good as some other Sangean radios like the PR-D7, but not terrible either. However, FM reception seems quite sub-par. The non-telescoping antenna is probably to blame, but since I don't listen to the FM band very often, I don't want to say too much. On the positive side, fit and finish seem very good. I think the 4xAA power source is a good compromise between weight and runtime and I do like the fact that the tuning is real analog, not DSP which kindof defeats the whole purpose of an analog radio to begin with. HOWEVER, in addition to less than stellar reception, it does have some control issues. The placement of the volume knob on the left side is a bit annoying. I have no idea why they did this and there doesn't seem to be a good reason for it. Also, as others have stated, the tuning is somewhat stiff which can make it difficult to fine tune. Furthermore, the power/band switch feels like it could wear out over time. And finally, while not a deal-breaker, the display is not backlit which makes it harder to use in the dark. Seems to me that if Sangean would pair up the good sound quality of this radio with the digital tuning, good reception and controls of the PR-D7, they could have one awesome little radio! ... show more

Sweet, sweet, and a most excellent radio! The Sangean put a huge smile on my face when I turned it on for the first time. Wow is all I can say about this compact AM FM radio! Features I like about this radio: Bass and Treble controls! yes..finally. A Pure Analog Tuning Experience. White lettering on Black Dial. Very easy to read. FM Reception is through the roof! AM Reception is fantastically good. Removable antenna. DC input. FM Stereo while using headphones! Stop the presses :) Speaker audio is very strong and sounds sweet with the extra bass/treble controls. Headphone audio is a wonderful experience with the addition of the bass/treble controls. Features that could be improved on or added: Carrying handle, vs strap. include AC adapter on all models. Power LED indicator. Aux In jack. Top or back lit dial...that would look amazing. Silver paint treatment needs protection. Dial tuner could be less stiff. Overall, I would choose this radio over my Sony 506, 19 and Panasonic 2400...main reason is the bass/treble controls, they work so well and make the smaller speaker sound so good. Did I mention Sangean thought about putting FM Stereo as a feature on the headphone jack? Killer! This radio is a must buy..fantastic. ... show more
