  • 5.0 out of 5 stars SanDisk Professional 22TB G-Drive Enterprise-Class External Desktop Hard Drive
Style: New Generation Capacity: 12TB
This review is on the SanDisk Professional 22TB G-Drive Enterprise-Class External Desktop Hard Drive. Needing more capacity, I returned the 12TB (quiet and vibration free) version and went with the 22TB version from Amazon Warehouse at a discount. After powering up the 22TB IDE drive for the first time, I noticed a modest amount of vibration and noise, even after cycling the drive on and off a number of times. So...in developing A.A. (Amazon Attitude) after having to return a number of recent purchases, I started the online return process. What is odd, is that by the time I finished the online return process, the drive had quieted down to no vibration and no noise other than initial booting up. File copying has been consistent at 240 - 250 MB/s from my SSD drive computer, and after a few hours of idling and file copying, the drive still remains "whisper quiet." I've seen the reviews claiming that the 22 TB drive only has 20 TB available, but after formatting the drive to NTFS Basic GPT drive for WIN 10 Pro, I have a full 22 TB (see attachments). I've been using only SSD drives for about 5 yrs., so I don't know if the new IDE drives need a 10 - 15 minute "break in period" to finally calm down. Speeds are as advertised using AAOMEI Partitioning Assistant Pro. Hope this helps Post Script next day: Unlike the 12 TB version, this 22 TB version does not go dormant after 15 minutes of no activity. I was OK either way, but going dormant may have led to extended disk life. Even while dormant, the drive was still visible and immediately "woke up" when needed. Still showing 22 TG actual disk space... Post Script 5-18-2023 - Looks like this drive also goes dormant after a period of time (in excess of an hour) with no activity, but remains in the WIN 10 Devices & Drives (My Computer). To me, this is good, and will extend the life of the drive. ... show more

  • 4.0 out of 5 stars Works OK, but power button isn't really a power button?
Style: New Generation Capacity: 6TB
Drive arrived on time. No problems with transferring data. Power button doesn't seem to work very well. There's no good tactile feel for whether or not the button is being "pushed". I contacted G-Drive customer support and was told the power button doesn't really turn the drive off completely. To do that, you have to unplug the power supply. Disappointing since that's one of the main reasons I purchased this particular drive. Also, the drive spins up and down periodically while the computer is sleeping and no it's not related to the computer settings. Support didn't give a very clear response to this, but I think it may be a Mac M2 issue, since there are other problems with external hard drives with the M1, M2 Macs. Bottom line: as long as a functional power button isn't important to you, it's a decent purchase. ... show more

  • 3.0 out of 5 stars Extremely decent
Style: New Generation Capacity: 12TB
This is a great drive. And don't get me wrong, it's got a great design, sleek feel, and well built. It's a fast drive and all-in-all decently priced. That's why I bought it. What made me write the review, was the fact that I'm tried of seeing this drive disconnect itself or eject itself whenever it senses it might be idle for even a moment. I use it for video editing primarily on a Mac. Often times, if I walk away for a break, I'll come back to find that the drive has decide to eject itself from my machine. Not too big of a deal since I can either just relink everything once I reconnect the drive, but even sometimes, I have to finagle the power button or unplug/replug the drive with the cable to try and get it to turn on/reconnect to the machine. It's not too bad, but doing it enough times because I see 3 notifications on my dashboard the the drive has disconnected 3 times (reconnected itself twice, then) since I've been away or seeing the media offline popup in my editing software yet again slows down the progression of getting work done and I'm really just tired of seeing it happen all too often. I've also seen a lot of reviews of other losing data on this drive which is cause for concern for me as more an d more appear so I fear I may need a replacement, likely with a different brand since I do not want to risk losing wedding footage. The constant ejects has me worried. ... show more

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars reliable; sturdy case; good performance; quiet, cool, and a good value
Style: New Generation Capacity: 6TB
I've been using two of these for more than a month, and so far I haven't had any problems at all. I'm using them for backups, so they don't get stressed very much, but they stay cool and quiet, unlike some other drives I've had. The enclosure seems rugged, and even looks a bit stylish. The performance is more than adequate for what I'm doing -- not as good as a SSD, of course, but better than an ordinary "USB-powered" drives. Note that this drive is much less "portable" than some of its peers: it has an external power supply (so you need to carry that with you, *and* have a place to plug it in, if you want to use it away from your office), and the enclosure is larger and heavier than those drives, and, although the enclosure seems very robust, it might not be as drop-resistant because it isn't padded like some of them are. This is fine with me, because my plan is to leave this on my desk and use it for backups when my computer is docked. ... show more

  • 3.0 out of 5 stars Ok for storage, NOT to work on
Style: New Generation Capacity: 6TB
I like that it’s Mac ready, and it looks nice. But this is more for unimportant files storage, NOT to work on, why? 2 bigs issues: 1. It goes to sleep constantly: When I do photo or video editing on the files stored in this unit, only if I just stop working on the editing software for less than 20 seconds to do something else on the computer (open email, web browser,…basically any thing while still having the editing software open and running) when I get back to the editing it takes the unit 15-20 seconds to wake up from sleep before I can continue editing, which means to prevent it from sleeping I have constantly work on the editing without doing any other tasks, this is really bad for time efficiency. 2. The disk ejects itself often, there’s times I get back to editing and all the files were offline, I have to restart the editing program. Another time wasting process and I don’t feel safe to store important data in there. I have used some cheaper HDD from Costco for my older PC and have never experienced these problems. ... show more
