  • It's a good starter tool
Platform For Display: PC/Mac Edition: Cable Included
Intro: I am reviewing the PC edition. I am also a software engineer so I had no trouble installing or configuring the game. My review is purely based on the experience of learning with Rocksmith 2014 edition. With that said, I had never taken any lessons or even learned a single cord on a guitar before I purchased this learning tool. I always had an interest in learning the guitar, but could never afford lessons (when I was younger) or didn't have the time to go somewhere for lessons (nowadays). So I thought I would give it a try. I've been playing with it now for a few months probably 3 days a week or so on average (first few weeks I played for 3 hours a day). My fingers hurt pretty bad, but I got through it and now they never hurt. Anyway, my short review is this. Rocksmith teaches you the basics. I understand cords now, I understand tremolo, I can do bends and slides. I can play Blitzkreig Bop at 99.7%. I can play almost all other songs in the entire original song list at at least 50%, some up to 80% or 90%. I also bought the original Rocksmith and transferred all the songs from it to 2014 edition and did the same with many of those. Many original Rocksmith songs are much easier and I can get high 90% on about 10 songs from that set. With that said, I don't think I am a guitar player still. Why? I can't read tabs (or music). And I cannot play most of these songs with the assistance of of Rocksmith with a couple exceptions for songs that I can nearly hit 100% on such as Blitkrieg Bop, Song 2, In Bloom, etc. In short, Rocksmith teaches you the basics of guitar, but it really teaches you very well how to play Rocksmith. I think that the only way to really become a guitar player is to memorize the music instead of following along with it on the screen. Does Rocksmith make this quicker? My guess is yes since a few months ago I couldn't play a tune and now I can play a couple songs. But I am much better at playing Rocksmith than I am at playing guitar. The game does try very hard to adjust the skill level based on how well or how bad you are performing. While this is a nice feature, the real downside to this is that it teaches you how to play the song wrong. Once you start to memorize a part of a song on an easy setting, you may look at the screen less so you can concentrate on hitting the proper notes. But the game sees you doing better and may bump up the difficulty right in the middle if you playing and you may not notice it. This isn't such a big deal in most cases since you eventually will be looking at the screen again, but this problem applies the other way too. There are times where I know how to play the proper notes but am just having a bad day and missing some of them. The game will "dumb down" the difficulty since it sees me struggling and do something such as change a series of power chords into a single note. Now I am missing them ALL because I am looking down playing the power chords and the song is ruined. Also, sometimes the difficulty seems to jump up TOO fast. There are times when the game will be giving you a series of single notes and then once you start nailing them, it will convert them into a chord that uses all 4 fingers on different frets. And right in the middle of the song too. Is there a solution for this? I don't know, probably not since really it's teaching you some of the song wrong in the first place. But some kind of override control over the difficulty would be really helpful to prevent some situations like these. All-in-all, I think that I will continue to improve with Rocksmith. I have already purchased a subscription to an online guitar school (found a groupon for cheap) that is giving me some good tips to help with playing outside of Rocksmith. I DO recommend this learning tool/game if you are just starting out. It will get you learning many important aspects of playing the guitar, and it is fun doing it because you're playing real songs (sorta). The mini-games are a neat addition and will probably be beneficial for some people, but I rarely use them personally. I like to just keep playing songs until I get better. Oh and the lessons are actually really good in this. They show you video footage of people playing and then have you perform the same techniques and check to see how well you're learning the techniques (to an extent). So I recommend this game to those who are just starting out with guitar or who have little experience. It might be beneficial to some experienced players, especially the session mode. But keep in mind that this game will teach you Rocksmith more than it will teach you guitar. I suggest you try to do some additional guitar learning outside of rocksmith in tandem with the game. I've been using this for months, and it only cost me about a hundred bucks with all of the content from the original Rocksmith. It convinced me to buy a new guitar since my old one (freebie from a friend) sucked. And I think it got me started on a path toward actually knowing a musical instrument that is both difficult, but rewarding when you can make music with it. I cannot give this less than 5 stars for these reasons even with some small complaints. I considered this learning tool/game to be worth the investment thus far. ... show more

  • Awesome
Platform For Display: PC/Mac Edition: Cable Included
Is it the fastest way to learn guitar? It might actually be, but if you've played before, you're going to have to jump over some hurdles first. I've been playing guitar for about 18 years. I learned on an acoustic guitar, and have played primarily acoustic since then, writing my own songs using basic chords, learning songs by ear and some from tablature (tabs), and using picking techniques that have been self-taught. I've purchased a couple electric guitars over the years, but I never really took the time to learn how to play lead guitar. I can rock out some power chords easy enough (these are simple three-finger chords a la old school punk music) and eventually get a grasp on how to pick a few things if needed, but I was ready to really learn how to play, so after watching some videos, I picked this up after eyeing it for a while. You may already notice I gave this 5 stars, but I really feel like it's because the pros are so overwhelming. It's not without its list of problems. CONS: • **UPDATE** This con can be remedied by an option to flip the guitar on screen. ** With previous experience, you may be used to reading tabs. Tabs show, from the top, the high E string. The low E is on the bottom. This is pretty standard, but in this game, for some reason, they decided to show everything the opposite way. Your high E string is on the bottom and your low E is on the top. When you first start playing, this is REALLY confusing, and it has taken me a week to get even remotely comfortable with. • There is a light audio delay, even when I'm plugged in with the supplied cable, and there is no extra audio processing. It's subtle, but I can tell it's there, and sometimes it's irritating. • Sometimes the chords are too sensitive. If you press a little too hard, slightly altering the pitch, it'll register as a miss, even if it sounds fine. • The note highway (like in Guitar Hero, Rock Band) comes at you vertically. Again, this is tough when you're used to tabs reading left to right. • When you first start playing, it feels like it takes a long time for the game to realize you need a higher difficulty if you're a semi-experienced player. You feel like you're playing very slowly. **UPDATE** A comment pointed out you can select the entire song and change its difficulty. Although this makes some parts very difficult while some are still pretty easy, this is somewhat of a solution to this issue. • One of my guitars is a Squier Strat and is only 21 frets. Some of the songs require you to hit the 22nd fret, and there's no option to omit the note, play an octave lower for that note, or anything. You just miss it. PROS • Although it's a weird layout, they color code the strings for you. If it weren't for this, I think it'd take me longer to get used to how they display everything. • The narrator's voice is very clear, and very encouraging. • The technology behind this game is actually pretty impressive. The fact that this even works is pretty cool. • I feel like I've learned more about electric guitar in one week than I have in 18 years. • They teach you most of the techniques used with electric guitar playing, and it's done very well. • Great song selection. A few weird one-offs, but I like almost everything in the game. • Riff repeater lets you instantly go into a mode where you can repeat the current riff over and over until you feel comfortable with it. Really cool. This game is very fun, and I feel a little funny calling it a game. It really is more of a tool for learning guitar, and it's executed quite well. I'll be picking the next one up for sure. ... show more
