  • Compact, nice build quality, easy to install, solid performer.
Style: 4 Channel Size: 300 Watt
I bought this to replace an Alpine 445U (45W RMS x4) amp that I installed a year ago to replace a Clarion XC1410 (50W RMS x4) amp that I installed in my brand new Toyota Sienna XLE AWD a few years ago. I pair it to a Kenwood DDX5901HD stereo and a pair of JL Audio C5-650 (component tweeters/woofer) and Kicker CS65 rear 2-way speakers. With the Clarion, I could not listen to bass heavy music (hip hop) without significant distortion (crackle/pops) with the volume turned up. With the Alpine, it got better but still could not avoid the distortion at higher volumes. I wanted to upgrade from the Alpine for a while but could not find many good choices since I wanted to keep the location under the front passenger seat, which is not that roomy with all the seat electronics already under there. I finally decided on the Rockford Fosgate PBR300X4 since it provides 75W RMS (the JL Audio requires 25-75W RMS and the Kickers use up to 100W RMS) and is small enough to fit under the seat. Installation was a breeze since all the wiring was there from my Alpine installation. I used RCA cables for the inputs and for the outputs crimped the included connectors to my speaker wires. The power/ground/remote connect to a conveniently removable connector that enables you to makes the connections and simply insert the connector to the amp, rather than make the connections directly in the amp. This made the installation easier as the power and ground lines were not sufficiently long enough to make connecting it directly to the amp very easy. The amp itself is pretty simple to use, it has high pass and low pass (both set at 80hz) filters, neither of which I used or tried. There is a switch to go between 2 or 4 channel but I only used 4 channel for my setup. There are separate gain dials for front and rear speakers. For my setup, I ended up turning gain to about midway for the rear speakers and very low for the fronts. The instructions don't suggest using a multimeter like amp installations usually do, instead using the method most people probably end up using: turn the gain down and the volume up until you get distortion, then dial back the volume a bit and increase gain until you have sufficient volume. It worked fine for me and voila -- no more distortion of any sort even at a high volume of bass heavy music. I ended up having volume turned up almost to max with the gain adjustments as mentioned above, and it is sufficiently loud for me (tiring on the ears at any higher volume/gain) but if I wanted to go even higher I am not sure I could without getting distortion with higher gain (which I was getting when I first tested it out with the stock gain setting). For me though, it seems loud enough, even on the highway driving through the rain, and without any distortion. Have not had any problems with overheating as there is at least 1 inch of clearance around the amp as the company recommends for sufficient heat sink cooling. Overall, highly recommend this amp if you have modest RMS using speakers and want to a compact amp to stow under a seat. I've always liked Rockford Fosgate speakers (have 6 of them in each of two other cars) as they handle bass like a champ even if they are not exactly audiophile quality, but this amp is a solid performer also and a definite upgrade to the Alpine 445U it replaced. FWIW, there is a testing sheet included where the tech who actually tested the amp measured the RMS and mine measured at 83W (rather than the rated 75W) x4 channels. ... show more

  • Excellent Amp, RF fan now!
If your sub is cutting out, check your connections first... more on that below. This was a replacement for the PBR300X1 (exactly the same, less 200 watts) that I thought was shot. This amp is awesome! Currently powering a Rockford Fosgate P3 10 inch at 500watts/1ohm and sounding killer (in Honda Odyssey even)! Small footprint with lots of power. I have its sister amp for the main cabin speakers, using all Rockford Fosgate wiring/distribution blocks. The only cons I can find is the positioning of the switches and connections, but I guess that can't be helped if you want a small footprint (I use my van for work, so a big install wasn't an option). They do get hot, I added an 80mm fan for each amp (negative from fan into amp ground, positive into amp remote, gets power from the head unit that way & comes on with amps) in a custom box. I got the bass boost knob as well, I find that to be essential now that I have it (I'll be posting a separate review on that in a bit). Might actually replace the amp set-up in my other car... just to add a knob, lol. So, I had the 300 watt version installed with the hu, other amp and all wiring at a local shop a year or so ago. They put the amps and all cables IN the dash behind the head unit, against the heating duct! Yes these amps are small enough for that! Many many overheating shutdowns later, I finally reinstalled the whole thing, new cables and all. The sub started cutting out a couple days later, so I switched with the sub in my other car to test it. Still cut out in the van, so I thought the amp was fried, too late waiting to re-install, nuts. Got the new amp on sale here, installed it, same thing - sub cutting out?!?!? Replaced the sub (it was a cheapo intended to be replaced when I got money anyway, and I had money that day), still cut out with the new sub. One big plus with these amps is that you screw the wiring into terminals that you then plug into the amp (imo)... so I simply unplugged the amp. After a minute or two, the cabin speakers started doing the same thing (they had been occasionally popping since the re-install too - I should've caught it then, I know this stuff well). Checked my connections to discover 1) terminal connection on the battery was loose so the connection was flaky (huh?!? no idea how that happened), and 2) the ground I made was loose. I actually thought that may be a problem when I installed it (note: I put the amps behind the second row in my mini-van, I grounded under the carpet under the runner board, very thin metal, the screw simply came loose. My fix was to use a much bigger screw and thick tape to hold it in place too). I fixed these issues, been 2 weeks now sounding amazing with exactly zero issues! Oh, I plugged the old 300 watter in, and found it to be fine after all. So far I haven't had any issues with RF products at all (all the wiring in both my Mustang and Odyssey are RF as well.) ... show more
