This has brought me right back to my childhood! But, unlike the rock tumbler of my childhood, this thing is MUCH quieter. The cylinder is made of a rubberized material, so that helps considerably with the noise level. And, as your stones become more polished, the noise gets even quieter. It comes with some interesting stones and everything else you need so you can start polishing right away. It takes a long time to complete a full polishing cycle - about 2 weeks, according to the instructions. The instructions are a bit vague on how long to run each polishing step, so you have to let it run for a day or two, check the stones, and either increase the time on that step or move to the next one, again checking after a couple of days. I guess the vagueness is necessary because each type of stone (quartz, granite, etc) determines how long the cycle needs to run. Thankfully, though, it's the polisher is quiet enough that you can put it in a little-used and it shouldn't bother you. I put the tumbler on a thick towel on my washing machine and closed my laundry room door. I can barely hear it tumbling. The timer shuts off automatically, so you don't need to keep track of when you started it. I have two negatives: 1. There is enough polishing material for only one polishing cycle and you're not given information on where to buy more polishing material. 2. The instructions are a bit hard to read and a bit confusing because of the Chinese to English translation. The booklet is not detailed as stated in the description. ... show more

As someone who has always been fascinated by the beauty of polished gemstones, I was really excited to try out the BUAOB Rock Tumbler Kit. And I have to say, I'm really impressed with this product. The kit comes with everything you need to turn rough rocks into beautiful gems, including a 7-day polishing timer, 2 belts, a bag of rough stones, and 4 stages of polishing grits (coarse, fine, polishing, and final polishing). The instructions are easy to follow, and I appreciate the fact that the kit includes everything I need to get started. One thing I really like about this rock tumbler is that it's really easy to use. I simply load the rocks into the barrel, add the grit and water, and let the machine do the rest. The timer makes it easy to keep track of how long the rocks have been tumbling, and the clear barrel allows me to watch the transformation as the rocks are polished to perfection. The results are really impressive - the rough stones are transformed into beautiful, polished gems that are perfect for jewelry making or display. I've also found that the kit is a great way to learn more about geology and the process of rock polishing in general. Overall, I'm really happy with my purchase of the BUAOB Rock Tumbler Kit.     • Pretty neat, fun, easy to use.
It's one of those things I always wanted as a kid, but never really had the opportunity to get one. Now I have one, and it's just about as cool as I thought it would be. I actually had a few special stones of my own that I added to it, along with the set you get with it. They of course all came out looking just as cool as you expect. Now of course, not everyone will find the utility of having a bunch of pretty rocks laying around, but you already know if you're the kind of person that will. I think pretty much any kid will find it fascinating, they get to put in the work, and turn a bunch of rough looking gravel into stones worthy of making into jewelry. The thing itself is pretty much what you'd expect, but better. I remember seeing the ones years ago with the cheap plastic barrel and weak gear drives, and this is so much better. The barrel is a heavy duty rubber material, with metal reinforcements, and it uses a much better belt drive system. It functions well, the timers are all spot on, and it even comes with an extra belt so that when you end up using it all the time you'll have an extra! Everything you need to get started is included in the box, the polish powders, sample stones, the cords, the base, just everything ready to plug and play. Of course it's a little noisy, it's a barrel full of rocks rolling over and over, but it's much quieter than you would expect. I suggest this for anyone that wants to get started on stone polishing, you can't go wrong, no matter how old or young. ... show more

    • Worried About the Tab on Lid
I'm worried that the tab on the lid to the barrel will rip off. I don't know how I'll get the barrel out if it breaks. I feel like this is a major flaw in the design.

    • Great entry to rock tumbling
My daughter loves science and learning, and my last experience with a rock tumbler was the one my brother had when I was a kid, so I thought this could be a fun learning experience for my daughter, and also help to teach patience =) The kit comes with everything you'll need to get started, including some rough rocks, and 4 levels of grit/polish to get you through each of the four stages of tumbling. The instructions are clear enough, giving a rough description of each step, and how long it needs to run. It cautions not to dump the used grit down your sink, and it would be wise to heed that advice. Dump it in the yard, or the garden, or just somewhere that isn't going to potentially mess up your plumbing. The results are pretty great, you can see how after each step the rocks change, and turn into something smooth and shiny from what was once rough and kind of dull. It's a fun to see how things change through each step, and both my daughter and I were excited to check on the status between each of the four steps. If you like how things are going, you can always buy more grit to run more rocks or other things through the tumbler. I think I'm going to try making sea glass on the next go 'round. ... show more
