  • A great game
Platform: PlayStation 4 Edition: Standard
Rock band has been a hit around our house since purchasing the original game years ago on PS3. Having purchased a PS4 this past Christmas, it was one of the first games on our list. If you've played previous versions, you will not find it difficult to step in and get up and running immediately. Overall gameplay is solid and the new additions such as the freestyle guitar solo great. As others have mentioned, importing songs from Rock Band 1 and licenses of certain artists is a frustration if like us you did not purchase early enough to get the disc export pack before it expired . If you subscribe to any streaming music service then you understand that music licensing is just an altogether complex world and every now and then you can't find that one song you wanted to listen to and the game operates under the same principle. I was happy that I could pull in quite a few songs from previous versions especially considering they were on a different system. The one gripe I do have is that the process of finding my old songs was exhausting. Instead of finding the tracks in the in-game store, I had to search for them through the Playstation Store. This might be more of a gripe about the Playstation Store as it was not easy to find all of the tracks I had purchased because of the filtering options were so limited. In the end, I was able to find most of my tracks and get them into the game. Besides that, we thoroughly enjoy the game as each new version of Rock Band seems to bring about a nostalgic feeling. I am also thankful that I can continue to use the same controllers that we purchased on the original Rock Band since that was a pricey venture. ... show more

  • A welcome return...room for some improvement
Platform: PlayStation 4 Edition: Standard
(Written from a perspective of a Rock Band fanatic) We have been die-hard Rock Band fans since Rock Band 2. Since then, our song collection on Rock Band 3 (including previous imports) numbered 1,251 songs. When Harmonix signed off with "American Pie", we were sad to see our weekly expectations of new DLCs dissolve. We were very excited to see Rock Band 4 return and eagerly dropped it in and even started downloading songs from our library 2 days ago when they silently appeared on the PSN store (so far, downloaded over 420 songs from our collection). Pros ------ 1. One of the things that turned me off in Rock Band 3 was its campaign. Its challenges seemed more like a chore than anything else and clothing, hair styles, etc., were all tied to challenges and not from any money earned from doing gigs (in fact, money was simply absent). That what I loved about Rock Band 2's campaign and the quirky style of Rock Band 2's rise to stardom sees a welcome return. Love that clothing item? Instrument? Then start earning some cash! That said, Rock Band 4 also has other methods of earning other lucrative items as well, including challenges. If anything, Rock Band 4 is a hybrid of 2 and 3 and I'd say that it takes the best parts of both. 2. Guitar solos. It sounded gimmicky at first, but somehow Harmonix managed to pull it off. During solos, you are able to play your own riffs with a colored highway that indicates whether you should play long notes, quarter notes, etc. Or you can play your own...but if you follow the note pattern, you'll score higher. That and the 2 sets of 5 frets will play lower/higher notes, respectively...and I'll be damned if it doesn't sound good. It actually sounds great. Not enamored with the feature? Then turn it off...the choice is yours! 3. Vocal freestyle. Similar to guitar solos, you can choose to sing certain parts your own way provided that you're within key. Again, it's a great feature. There are also "dynamic drum fills" that provide similar functionality as the freestyle guitar solos/vocals. 4. Overdrive. If you played Rock Band 3, then you may have fell prey to overdrive on vocals not functioning by simply vocalizing into your microphone (you had to hit "select" on your controller instead). Thankfully, this has been properly addressed this time around and it works flawlessly even with out home entertainment unit cranked. 5. Older instruments. All our Rock Band instruments (guitars, drums) worked...YES!!! 6. DLC. License issues are a nightmare, but Harmonix managed to get 1,500 songs to carry through. Some bands, however, did not and this is due to legal entanglements (Green Day, for example, did not carry through...even if you had the PLUS version of the standalone disc that allowed you to export to RB3, say goodbye to it in RB4 and expect to pay for what they've released again). Cons ------ Yes, sadly, there are a few. 1. I'm not sure if this is a PSN issue or not, but it seems like having your own characters are tied to your profiles in some gameplay modes. I seem to recall this as a major pain in the butt feature on Xbox 360 with previous iterations of Rock Band (oh, you're "guest" here) and this has crept its way into RB4 on the PS4. While you're able to pick characters that you've created when you're on tour (even as a "guest"), it WON'T let you do the same thing in Quickplay mode. Weird, but annoying. 2. If you want to have multiple vocalists, Rock Band 4 requires you to plug in multiple microphones AFTER the game has launched. It's a minor logistical issue...but also annoying. Hopefully this gets patched. 3. Singstar microphone adapter won't work. Granted, this wasn't promised, but it worked fine on Rock Band 3. Don't expect it to work on Rock Band 4, however (ours didn't). However, our other Rock Band USB microphones worked just fine, so no issue for us. However, you should be made aware of this just in case you felt it should work. 4. Menus. Character creation was not immediately intuitive until we selected "Go On Tour." There, you can create a character, but clothing and instrument choice appeared to be absent. It wasn't until later that we found that these level of customizations were available in the "Rock Store." We've got it figured out now, but it was initially frustrating trying to figure out where everything fit. Graphically, it's pleasing and the notes on the highway are dynamic and vibrant (almost like a swirling miasma in each note), but it's definitely not causing all cylinders to fire on next-gen engines. It looks good, but you could almost imagine it working on the previous gen systems...ALMOST. Acoustically (and this is where 90% of the experience is at), it sounds better than ever. On a side note, if you do have multiple microphones, you'll want to invest in a USB hub. There are only 2 USB inputs on the PS4 and having a hub makes things a lot easier. Also keep in mind that the USB inputs don't spread out too much power, so I'd recommend a powered USB hub. I have made it work without power before, but I have had some adapters die out on the PS3 before because of insufficient juice. While I don't know if the same would be true on the PS4, it doesn't hurt. We're glad to see it back and we're glad to see new songs hit our living room! If you have any questions, I'd be happy to answer them. Until then, party on! Questions that have come up thus far: ------------------------------------------------- 1. Does Rock Band 4 still feature Pro Drums? A: Yes, it does. So if you still have your cymbals from before, they'll still be of use here. Pro Guitar did NOT return (Harmonix frankly acknowledged that Rocksmith has taken the stage here); keyboards from Rock Band 3 did NOT return either. ... show more

Platform: PlayStation 4 Edition: Standard
Well, its an another Rock Band game to rock. Lots of negative reviews comes from customers who's dont follow developers forum and have no idea about upcoming futures. It is as right now has less futures compare to RB3 but it's all coming folks, Dev's went Indi with no back up from major labels like MTV in the past so it is hard for the to roll out all the futures fast, including multiplayer and songs transfer, but it's all coming in the next 6 months or less, just keep it cool and support Indi devs so they can bring better experience to us, if people not going to do so then we all going to say goodbye to future of Rock Band. ... show more

  • Not worth the money compared to their previous titles.
Platform: PlayStation 4 Edition: Standard
I absolutely love Rock Band. That being said, Rock Band 4 is ok at best. With the PS3 and Rock Band 3, we had a multiplayer online mode with the ability to play with random strangers. Now in order to do this with Rock Band 4, you need to buy the additional $30 DLC expansion. Also lately they have been putting more pop music instead of rock. Now I understand this is to widen the types of players out there but the game is called Rock Band. I dislike most Metal music but I don't complain about that since it is still a genre of Rock. Since they are adding a lot more Pop, why not keep the keyboard from Rock Band 3? That was actually fun to do. I would recommend this game only if is half the retail price since you would still need to buy the DLC expansion pack. ... show more

  • Downloading songs is a must
Platform: PlayStation 4 Edition: Standard
I really enjoy this game but the songs on disc are definitely lacking Once I redownloaded the songs I had from the ps3 versions (which was free once logged into account) and downloaded new songs it became an excellent game but it for sure necessary. I’d give it 5 stars if song selection was better without the dlc. But with it I would give it 5. I play the dlc songs 5x more than songs on disc. Once you build up what songs you like it becomes a highly enjoyable game! ... show more
