  • good for cruisers not for road biking
The term "Road Biking" has a specific meaning and the majority of rides in this book are more suited to older couples out for a leisurely cruise than using a "road bike" and averaging typical road bike speeds and distances. For example most of the rides are in the fifteen mile range and some are really along paths that one should NOT be riding a road bike in that they are way to crowded for anything faster than five to seven miles an hour. If you have a cruiser / hybrid and are looking for a wealth of short sunday rides around DC then this book would be for you and probably a very good book in that. However titling it Road Biking is misleading and why I am giving it a negative two star review, because it misses the routes in the 35 mile to 75 mile range most road bikers ride, nor are the included routes suitable to allow a cyclist to ride at an average road biking pace. A shame because not only are there some good routes around DC there seems to be a void when it comes to guide books for this region with true road biking routes. ... show more

  • Co-author's response
I am responding to a valid criticism in the customer review. Globe Pequot originally published this book in 1990 under the title "Short Bike Rides in and Around Washington, DC"--a guide to family friendly paths, trails, and a few roads. The series has been revised a few times. Since I left WDC in 1993 the publisher engaged Rolf to update the earlier work. Somewhere along the line the entire series acquired the "Road Biking" tag. I admit it's misleading, although I had nothing to do with this decision. The book has always sold well; I think it's still a handy little guide, best suited to those new to the DC region. ... show more
