  • Good Slow Speed Control in Leather
Smooth, quiet, controllable motor for my walking foot. If you still don't like the speed, simply install a smaller pulley as I did. I used a 1-3/4" pulley for further speed reduction and torque. The length of your belt has a lot to do with how the speed control functions. I started with a belt that was too short, and the motor had to be lifted to its highest position. Then the treadle rods weren't long enough to reach the correct hole in the motor control arm (I like to use the hole furthest from the motor for best control). With the 3" (75mm) pulley, and short belt even the servo seemed twitchy and very similar to my old clutch motor. So I replaced the pulley with the 1-3/4" version which made the 39" belt the correct length. With the motor height in the middle of its adjustable range, the treadle rods now reached the correct hole in the motor arm. This combination made my Consew 226 walking foot very easy to control at slow to medium speeds. I can punch through several layers of 4oz. leather stitch-by-stitch without issues. If you lengthen your treadle rods even more, the pedal will bottom out before reaching the top speed. This gives you even more control, especially for beginners. At the lowest speed setting, this machine will not even move. Not to worry, just dial the speed knob up a bit to accommodate your machine, and the thread you are using. I set my speed dial to 1/3 or 1/2 of max (around 1280 RPM). The speed is very easy to adjust and the foot pedal is variable speed too, so the machine will not operate at maximum set RPM unless you mash your foot down. ... show more

  • Great motor for the money
As others have noted, there are no installation instructions but it is just a motor on a mount that you bolt onto a table... Unfortunately, my table and machine were old enough that I could not use the same bolt holes as some lucky buyers here have been able to do. That said, it was not hard to mount the motor using the supplies bolts and gear. A quick removal of the spring clip lets you take the mount off the motor, which then makes it easier to put the mount against the table underside and mark for the drill. The carriage bolts are then pushed down through the top of the table, either drill a small recess to let them sit flush or do as I did and hammer them in so they grip the table better. Then get the mount all bolted on and hang the motor. If you are like me and had to drill your own bolt holes, you may have to get a new drive belt too. My old unit was using a leather cord (yes, that old), so I used a piece of cord marked at the length I needed and went to the auto parts store where I looked through their v-belts until I found a short one that looked right. Since the motor is adjustable for tension/height, I was able to get enough adjustment to snug up the belt. Having a v-belt drive makes my machine noticeably better, as the leather cord could slip and I couldn't get good piercing power on thick items unless I ran the machine full tilt (which was near impossible to get a straight line with). The motor tolerates being dialed down in speed pretty well. Yes, there is a let off at the lower region, but I have no big trouble getting a nice easy and controllable pace using my foot plate. I recommend this to anyone who wants the control and flexibility of a servo motor. I am VERY glad I bought it. ... show more

  • Quiet motor, slower speed and easy to install
Very easy to install. We have a Rex 26-188. The motor fit the same holes, had the same length bolts, etc. Went together completely with no adjustments. Don't expect directions - it does not come with any and rightfully so since every machine is different but there is a u-tube on line installing a 440w that is nearly identical so it can walk you through the replacement. The motor is complete and came with additional brake cork, bushes and fuse for the on/off switch. We did contact the manufacturer through Amazon about the extra brake cork just to make sure and they replied within an hour. That was super responsive!!! [There is some incorrect info on Amazon questions and answers - it does in fact come with the treadle connection and does not come with a belt from machine to motor. You use your existing belt.] The motor is much more quiet and we are able to slow it down to a smooth slow start for corner and leather work. Very pleased with purchase. ... show more

  • Really happy with this new motor
Really happy with this new motor, works great, no issues so far. I wrote a little tutorial on how to install it if anyone is hesitant about getting one for this reason. http://www.instructables.com/id/Industrial-sewing-machine-servo-motor-swap/

  • R&R the old clutch motor on your old industrial - HUGE improvement
I have an old Singer 211W155 industrial sewing machine. Replacing the old National Clutch Motor with the Rex Servo Motor 550 dramatically improved the very-low speed performance of the machine. As stated in other customer reviews, the motor swap is a must; period. Regarding mounting to the table it was essentially a drop in. The three mounting bolt centers fit the new mounting plate very well. I did buy some new 5/16" bolts, extra fender (large diameter) washers and rubber washers from Home Depot but I didn't have to modify the table (drill new holes, etc). Also, I agree with the recommendation to install a smaller motor pulley to improve low speed performance even more. The motor shaft is 15mm and the pulley that comes with the motor is 75mm OD with a bore for 15mm. Trying to find metric pulleys is impossible, but the following was easy and low cost. I went to Ace Hardware, got a 1.5" OD by 1/2" bore pulley made for a 1/2" v belt, replaced the old 3/8" v belt with a slightly shorter 1/2" v belt and ran a 19/32" drill through the pulley bore hole to fit the motor shaft. The hardest part is having, and using the 19/32 bit. If you have access to a small lathe like I do, it's easy. It would still be a huge improvement with the supplied 75mm pulley but the pulley modification I recommend optimizes low speed performance (another 2X speed reduction). Very much worth the extra effort. All good. Works Great! Night and day difference! ... show more
