Just paint and stain to get a genuine wood finish. It looks and feels like real wood because it actually contains 66% genuine wood! If you want a raised, defined grain, you can use the graining tool kit. Just apply a second coat of Retique It once the first is dry, and grain it while it is still wet. Use the same color or a different color depending on how defined you want the grain.

I bought this straight from the website. I had originally tried Heirloom Traditions paint, because I liked how easily it seemed to be to use and would not require multiple steps. However, they did not have any colors that would work for my project. I did appreciate that Heirloom Traditions included a paint color deck so I could see the actual colors, instead of what was on my computer screen, though. So I looked into Retique It. When I reached out to customer service about a paint color deck, I never got a response. It would be extremely helpful if they had this, because it's difficult to tell the actual color vs what you see on your device/computer screen. I ordered this kit anyway, and decided to give it a shot, although I was nervous that it would not be the shade that I needed. Once open, you cannot get a refund. So I painted the wood trim I had and was really doubtful that it would work out when I saw the first and second coats. Then I applied the gel stain and felt instantly relieved when it looked more like real wood. You'd think that was a happy ending, but no. I could not get that gel stain to give me one uniform color and could see variation, no matter how I tried to fix it. While it did give the wood a more realistic, rustic look, I was going for a more modern look, and the variation was not helping. So I spent time to redo it, and ended up with the same varied result, which was very frustrating. I ended up using all of the pint that I had ordered, and was very disappointed. If you're ok with variation, you may like this. If you want an even, uniform color, you won't get it with Retique It. The kit was pretty expensive for the size, and I'm not sure I would recommend it for the headache. ... show more
