  • Good game for TF fans who like a bit of complexity.

I wasn't really sure what to expect of a deck builder as this was my first, but I've been wading into board games with increasing complexity. I went in on this purely out of love for the TF franchise and chose to ignore a fair number of negative reviews out there. My first game (solo w/ 2 bots) was intimidating at first and the comments in some of the other reviews began to haunt me. This all went away after a few turns though, and my 8 y/o has been able to get the gist after watching a few turns. I will likely have to check on the rule book periodically, and I'm ok with that. Maybe I'm blinded by my love for TF, but the game is great fun, does an awesome job of capturing (mostly) G1 TF, and I'm already considering the expansions to play as decepticreeps and dinobots in the near future! ... show more

I really wanted to love this game! I love Transformers and was bummed when Wizards of the Coast canceled the Trading Card Game. But hey, I love deck building games. So would this game be the replacement in my heart? First we will start with the good. THE GOOD: -This game does have some nice things going for it. The artwork is in general very good. -I like the selection of Transformers. The game plays fast as well. And surprisingly is great single player as well. You move around a matrix revealing cards which you can add to your deck, or it might be Decepticons you can defeat. THE BAD: -The fact that the matrix is random is kind of annoying. You might be able to build up your deck, or you might hit a boss early that puts you on a death clock. -The rulebook. My goodness. This is probably one of the worst rulebooks I have ever read. It seems simple enough until you are looking for an answer for a question. Have fun with that! -Wonky rules when it comes to multiplayer. As good as the solo game is multiplayer is kind of a hot mess. You can play co-op or semi competitive. Umm. Yeah that's a problem. Co-op is ok. It makes the game laughably easy sometimes. But competitive is kind of confusing. And annoying. Sometimes you are forced to chose between winning or you all losing. So no win situation. BOTTOM LINE: -Pass. This game has some memorable ideas. And it gets a few things right. But there is just too much things it gets wrong to give it a pass. Maybe when the expansion where you get to play as the Decepticons comes out it will make the game better. But until then it feels kind of half baked. I say don't spend your money. There are much better games out there. ... show more

  • Great game and not too bad to learn.
Style: Base Game
Highly recommend for TF fans. Lots of fun Easter eggs throughout the game. The game feels a lot like dominion to me. If rules are tricky, watch a video. There are many that are helpful. The game is very interesting and lots can happen. Looking forward to playing more!

  • Excelente deckbuilding

muy buen deckbuilding, lo más interesante es que sus expansiones añaden jugabilidad, pero el juego actualmente es muy sólido (tanto en modo cooperativo como competitivo), y las ilustraciones son muy buenas

  • Mostly for TF fans

Transformers Deck Building game is different from any other deck builder I have played; that’s good and bad. Instead of having a ‘shop’ to purchase cards Transformers uses the cards as the board. The cards are arranged face down in a grid (size dependent on the number of players) called the Matrix. The player moves around the Matrix and then may turn a card face up. The card could be something useful for your deck or it could be an enemy. I like the uniqueness of this method but it does take away from forming a deck-building strategy. It’s also possible to reveal a Boss early in the game leading to a quick loss. That has been rare for me. Initially, Transformers has a fairly steep learning curve. The rule book is not very clear and difficult to navigate. I had some confusion with the Ambush rules (an enemy's initial attack) on my first play but after a couple more games I had it all down. The game length is longer than expected. Two-handed solo play takes 90 minutes. The best part about this game is the theme; the art is amazing. Most of the cards are based on G1 characters and it seems to draw heavily from the IDW comics series. The game handles transforming well. Robot and Alt modes feel different. Generally, the Alt-modes have more movement and the Robot modes are better at fighting. First and foremost this game is for Transformer fans. If you are not a fan then pass on this game. Fans of deck builders may like this game but there are better deck builders out there. ***Expansions*** Infiltration Protocol: The additional cards are great. This set features Wreckers and Phase Sixers from IDW comics. I don't care for the Infiltration mechanic. It depends heavily on getting specific cards into the Matrix. The randomness of the Matrix makes winning very difficult and moves the focus away from deck building. ... show more

  • Watch how to videos then read the rulebook
Style: Dawn of Dinobots
Got this game the other day and was instantly overwhelmed. As others have stated, the rule book is very text heavy and overcomplicates things with unnecessary verbiage. Found a few how-to videos and those helped immensely!! Board Game Coffee probably being the best. Also, definitely play solo before playing with others. Stumble through it first, and you will stumble through it, but the end result is very rewarding. A little like Marvel Legendary (another family favorite) but without the thousands of keywords. Very good in that you can adjust the difficulty with simple modifications. Can't wait to add some of the expansions! ... show more
