  • Simple to use, great results.
I keep my hair very short and got tired of going to the barber every 2-3 weeks for a 15 minute cut (and that time included a beard trim and shampoo). Thought I’d try this and love it. I use the second smallest comb attachment and the device fits very ergonomically into my hand for a 10 min trim every 10-14 days. Simple to use and the cut is very even. Only assistance needed is a final visual check from my wife to make sure I don’t miss something and to trim the back of my neck. ... show more

  • Great! But maybe not for everyone?
Update: 10/30/17 - Over the last week the unit has started to turn itself off mid-clipping. Typically once it feels the least bit of resistance. I don't have a lot of hair on my head in the first place, so when I say the "least bit" I really mean it. I sent an email to Remington last night. They asked me to provide them with a code behind the blade and now I have a replacement on the way! Hooray! So my 5-star rating remains intact. I still love this thing. Add now to that great customer service and I'm a happy bald guy! Update: 6/14/17 - I've had this for almost a year and a half now. Still love it. Still no issues with the battery. Still 5 Stars. Still annoyed there isn't a self-cleaner for it. HA! I bought one for my father during the holidays and he's happy so far. First I want to point out that the blade is 2.5 inches long compared to ordinary clippers which are traditionally 1.5 inches. I haven't seen that extra width pushed very much by Remington but it makes a big difference. I was pleasantly surprised when I received mine and actually saw the unit. I personally rate this 5 stars; but, I'm not sure it would be 5 stars for others. I've been shaving my head consistently since I was a teenager. Then in my late 20's it pretty much became a requirement as premature balding kicked in. None of us want the "old man horseshoe head" look. So I've been through about a dozen clippers over the last 25 years. Thus, I don't use any of the guides it came with. So I can't comment on their effectiveness. What I can point out are some of the positives: trimmed my hair faster than any other clipper ever, cordless, quiet (for a clipper), the wide blade (again), doesn't get hot, easy to hold and change grasps for different shaving directions, no razor burn, and the blades are curved. Don't overlook this idea of a curved blade. At first I blew it off but once experienced you realize it is way more comfortable and form fitting on your head and neck. Full disclosure, I had purchased the "Philips Norelco QC5580/40 Do-It-Yourself Hair Clipper Pro" a week prior to this unit through Amazon. I'm in the minority here (based on the reviews for the QC5580) but I was not happy with it at all. I followed the instructions as suggested for shaving my head. You should use the clipper portion first, then you switch to a shaving adapter which gets to the scalp. I have pretty thick hair (for what remains around the sides) so it required too many "passes" for my satisfaction. For those of you that shave your head to the scalp you will understand what I mean. It's tedious to go over the same portion over and over. I also had razor burn the next day. So I sent that one back. Amazon was kind enough to provide me with a full refund. Now for some "cons" (just to be fair): - Cleaning is a little awkward. Instructions say you need to wipe the blade with the included brush, then rinse the blade under water while the unit is running, then disconnect the blade from the unit and rinse both the blades and the unit individually, then dry everything, then put it all back together and use mineral oil on the blades, finally wipe off any excess mineral oil. Each time you use the unit! Ok, so it takes maybe 2+ minutes. But in an age when facial razors are self-cleaning, it just seems like this could have a cleaning unit as well. If one exists I'd love to know about it. - You will NOT get a smooth feel or look from this clipper. This to me is why some individuals will not give this 5 stars. And to an extent I toyed with giving it 4 stars because of it as well. But I've personally only found three ways to get a smooth-to-the-scalp shave. You either utilize a hand razor (very slow, requires shaving cream, and usually razor burn of some sort); purchase a Philips Norelco 1280X (yes, use an electric razor on your head); or my preferred method by a long shot invest in a Braun 790cc. Nothing beats the Braun 790cc for speed and performance. Plus, it obviously shaves your face and is self-cleaning. In a perfect world I can use my Braun every other day and maintain a skin tight look. Some of you might say "so why the Hell did you buy this thing"? But the reality is, life keeps you busy if you have kids and sometimes you get lazy and the old-man hair creeps in over a few days. In those situations, the Braun has a rough time cutting the "longer" hair. It is meant for your face after all. That's where this baby comes into play. The HC4250 trims it down just enough to get you by for the day, and more importantly sets you up to start using the Braun again. To be honest, I'm also putting this review out here for selfish reasons. I don't want it to get discontinued! I finally have something that can clean me up quickly. If this unit ever dies I really don't want to go back to a Wahl, Conair, or Oster! It's not perfect, but it gets the job done for my needs. ... show more

  • Well designed and great for travel
At first I wanted to give this 4 stars but changed to 5 for the reasons explained below. I purchased this after once again conducting a fruitless search for a dual voltage hair and beard trimmer to take overseas, as I didn't want to take a heavy converter in addition to the necessary plug adapters. I'm guessing that the reason it's difficult to find a dual voltage trimmer or razor is the 60MHz alternating current in the US versus 50 MHz in Europe (and probably many other places), thus causing problems with proper functioning of a trimmer/razor even if dual voltage because of the speed difference. I came to the conclusion that a battery operated trimmer was clearly the best option and this trimmer did indeed work very well. I returned only a few days ago from 2 months abroad traveling through Europe and used this trimmer for both my head and beard approximately every 5 to 7 days, as I keep both hair and beard closely cropped. Because it's not dual voltage, I did indeed need to take the voltage converter to charge the battery, but the trimmer itself is so small and convenient that it pretty much offset the minor inconvenience of packing the converter. For years I've been using a heavy duty Oster set of clippers that are downright awesome, with a powerful motor and self-sharpening blades that only intermittently require oiling. The motor in this Remington is clearly not as powerful as in the Oster, but the tradeoff is minimal size and weight. What this ultimately meant though is that the Remington worked best when fully charged, thus requiring recharging after every use. This is not really a big deal as it can be fully charged again in 15 minutes or so. Another result of the less powerful motor is that the Remington also works best if a light application of oil (included) is applied before every use. Again, this is not a big deal and the small oil bottle was quite easy to pack along. Functioning: I have to give this a 5-star rating because it is intended for trimming head hair (versus beard hair) and it did so with very minimal fuss, without throwing hair all over the place, trimmed evenly, rates extremely high on ease of use, and gets the job done efficiently and quickly. I'm impressed and now prefer it over my much more burley Oster clippers and I hope that it can last for years to come. It just makes the job so dang easy. Because it was the only set of clippers I took along to Europe, I had to make due with it for trimming my beard also. Frankly, I'm very happy with the results despite the design clearly not being optimized for that specific task. Once you do it a few times, you'll start getting very good, even results with little fuss. I should note that I do not have a goatee or other style that requires precision trimming. I simply needed my entire beard trimmed evenly and I was very happy with this trimmer's ability to do so despite the less than optimal design for doing so. Why did I almost give this 4 stars? Well, beard hair seems to give this trimmer more problems than head hair. I don't know if beard hair provides more resistance or what. But one change I made pretty quickly was to make sure I trimmed my beard first, when the clippers were fully charged, to avoid hairs getting caught/pulled, which is quite annoying. If the clippers were freshly oiled and fully charged, no hairs got caught or pulled. So I count that as a success. And I can't take away a star because the clippers don't necessarily perform optimally at something they weren't exactly designed to do in the first place. So the 5-star rating relates exclusively to the ease and and excellent usability when trimming head hair. I can conclusively say that I'm very happy to have found this well designed set of clippers. I'll update the review further if they develop any problems in the next year or so. ... show more

  • Good shaver, bad battery life
I got this shaver in March 2021, and it worked great for about 30 months. It's really easy to use, and I love the curved trimmer area - brilliant. It's super easy to use and to charge, and I really enjoyed having it. My only complaint is the battery life. About two years in, the battery wouldn't really hold a full charge, and the shaver would sputter on and off. Now it won't hold a charge at all, and despite what's shared here, you can't even use it when plugged in. But let's do a little math. The current price of the shaver is $47.99, and I got 30 months out of it. At one haircut per month, that's a cost per haircut of $1.59. Or, if you cut your hair every two weeks like a lof of guys who wear their hair short do, like I did, that's $0.80 per haircut. I'll take that any day. I do wish the battery life was more stable, but all in all, this has been a great shaver and I will reorder. It's so much easier and more effective than my much more expensive Wahl trimmer, with a smaller, flat trimming surface. ... show more
